Question: What constitutes a great M.2 NVMe Heatsink? Anyone? We're all about Results! A bit of variance between the PC temperature reading and the probe one. Is this worse than the previous Jeyi? At 52c.. Nice testing by the way. Also any chance to have a look into Thermalright SSD coolers. They have the HR-9, HR-10 and Pro models with different heatpipe configeraition. And the latter HR-10 Pro comes with a 30mm fan and four 5mm heatpipes. Which should be quite good performing being an active cooler with a dense finstack and multiple heatpipes.

⁠ Id be interested to see how sealed m.2 waterblocks perform. I think the extra thermal capacity would outperform most air solutions. specifically the barrow m.2 waterblock.

Hi Conner, Welcome. That's a distinct possibility. From our Test and Verify Results, so far Passive Cooling has Outperformed Active Cooling using conventional methods of currently available products. However, We have Subscribers who have used Water Blocks on M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drives. If you have the space and inclination, go for it. Let us know your Results. Appreciate your comments.

Hello Doug Craig - The Ferret Man, So far We've Tested 16 M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Heatsinks. All were Tested as close to the same as possible with some variances. All Pads were under Compression. With this Godfins heatsink, the delta temp is (52-30) = 22*C. With the iGlacier8 heatsink, the delta temp is (48-28) = 20*C. The iGlacier8 maybe a little bit better in delta temp (only 2*C), but its height make it unusable on the PCIE adapter and some MB. Very interesting. P.S: please do a test with Thermalright TR-M.2 HR-09 2280 if you have chance. That one looks like a monster!

Hi M150, To reiterate, We have Tested 16 M.2 NVMe PCIe Heatsinks. None are suitable as a Motherboard replacement that would allow anything overhead. All required height clearance. Some much more than others. And as You have Pointed out some are only getting taller. We look forward to Testing more M.2 NVMe PCIe Heatsinks as Designs change and adapt for PCIe 5.0. We will keep that in mind. We have now started Commenting in Our Motherboard Overviews about M.2 NVMe PCIe Heatsink Designs as that relates to Our Testing of said Designs. And for M.2 NVMe PCIe 5.0 Designs, We're seeing both Passive and Active Designs. What's most curious about those Designs are which Motherboard Manufacturer has chosen which Design to embrace. Hey! love the hardware test videos! i just happened to buy a "Graugear G-M2HS06" NVME cooler and was looking for a comparison but couldn't find any anywhere :( i am hoping for similar results as the Acidalie 4 pipe tho i might end up in space shortage under my Noctua NH-D15 on an Asus B450 Gaming Plus. that is why i would loved to have the black version of the Acidalie, it is 4mm lower than the Graugear one and also this doesn't come in black color. also for great low flow situations i cna highlight the Axagon CLR-M2XL alu.

Hi Flash Backs, To reiterate the same Question You have already asked on a different Video. We have answered. Not necessarily. We do not remove labels. With so much Testing of so manyComponents We would be able to tell them apart. That become a Question of Who's on First! Everything is in a Default Configuration for uniformity of Test Results. Besids, some M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drives are Designed to dissipate Heat through a thin copper plate on either or both sides of an M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD Drive. That Is Your choice. For Your discretion. We do not for reasons previously stated. So far, We have Tested 16 M.2 NVMe PCIe Heatsinks. And have stated why in some of those Videos but not all. Each Video is Edited for Time and Content. Your Results may vary. As always, Test and Verify!

does direction of fins make any difference for air flow? I would have expected higher temps on SM as it is blocking the airflow. if you notice, the fins direction is exactly opposite on this vs previous one. could you please comment

Hi Srini Attaluri, Welcome! Great Question! We've so far Tested 16 M.2 NVMe PCIe Heatsinks. Results of each are vastly different. The Two best are also the largest and those same Two are not suitable for the Supermicro Dual M.2 NVMe Adapter. Three Factors come into Play, as always, Price, Performance and Size. First, Results are better with Passive vs Active Cooling of those Tested. Second, the Numbers in Degrees. That was most intriguing. Some Designs were below expectations while others exceeded expectations. Anything below 65 Celsius was acceptable of a given size where space is at a premium. Designs are going to have to change. As We go faster, We get hotter. Not a concern on PCIe 3.0. Big concern on PCIe 4.0. And of great concern going forward on PCIe 5! Results are what matters most! We hope to Test more when Designs improve. Hope that helps! Thanks for Asking!

I kind of finalized on Acidalie vs Jeyi finscold goldfin. But both of them seems to have fins perpendicular to the air flow in SM chasis. so wondering whats the best fit for my use case.

Hi@@sriniattaluri9388, If Your Motherboard Chipset is PCIe 3.0, then Heat will not be an issue but Test, Monitor and Verify. Your Results may vary. Your Drives will not be any Faster than the Spec of 3,500MBps to reiterate due to the Motherboard Chipset. If they were PCIe 4.0, 1st, 2nd or 3rd Generation and attaining Speeds of 7,200MBps then Heat would cause the Drives to Throttle without Heatsinks! Hope that helps! Remember while We're Testing, the Case was open and on its side. Expect Your Results to vary. Our Testing can be a Guide of what to encounter and what to expect. Changing one thing can change everything!

There is a company working on a technology with the Peltier effect as a result. And if my Memory serves me correctly, Intel is behind this endeavor. Now I'll have to dig that Info up! Hi Mike, Great Question! Not so simple an answer. In theory data would become unreadable due to NAND flash wear-out. That's why We should always Monitor S.M.A.R.T. on Our M.2 NVMe PCIe Drives. @@BuildOrBuy Thanks for the response, as Back Blaze and others have stated there is no such thing as absolute reliability. What I normally do about twice a month is run SFC just tp check stuff. If the M.2 was working normally and just simply overheated without creating a thermal shutdown, is the drive still usable? I just had to return a SSD that a family member had accidentally fried and got a replacement but I'm just wondering how long a damaged M.2 device will last. Old hard drives sometimes gave a warning but with an M.2 they say it just happens and there you are. It's just the hassle of popping the hood and doing major surgery all over again.

Hi@@mqcapps, Absolutely! You bring up an interesting point We all need to be aware of. We need to monitor SMART on a regular basis. We just don't know how long an NVMe will last. Our best Option is the Disk Control Panel. For a Family Member SSD to have failed, very curious. Any idea what happened or in what usage instance? Could have even been a capacity issue.

@@BuildOrBuy The SSD failure was a lesson in product quality which is not just about the parts themselves, but the company that sells them. One of my family members was redoing her PC because she "had to have" Mardi Gras style RGB and so she had to redo the motherboard. A mishap occurred. The PSU was a "house brand" and it was gone and she smelled something burning. The SSD was stone dead, however the 4 TB hard drive tried to work, the motor came, windows tried to find it, but apparently something on the circuit board went poof. The DVD drive mechanically worked and the motherboard, from Asus, soldiered on. In other words, the SSD would not take any kind of major hit. This does not mean that they are delicate but like a hard drive, you can't use them as a hockey puck but they seemed to be a lot more sensitive than the mechanical parts. The quality thing has to do with how quick the manufacturer will replace the parts and how much broken glass they are willing to drag you over to replace them. We got everything replaced within two weeks including a replacement SSD and drive from Seagate. Western Digital has always given us a hassle and one of my family members said at her job, her server farm refuses to use them because of this. So the tongue wagging I gave to my family member was about reading the manual and not just following the fan boys on KZbin. She said she was shocked, stunned, and amazed at the things she learned by reading the manual. Her brother learned this lesson as well when he drowned his CPU in thermal paste. Every time we do a motherboard anything, he opens the manual and checks that what he's doing is okay. This includes when he has to fool around with motherboard headers, he checks the Q connector to make sure it's the right one. This is actually the first thing he does when he opens the box and before he inspects the parts as even same model boards may have changes.

Hi@@mqcapps, A rough experience all the way around. Sounds like working on a ready built system. She was fortunate. Ready Built Systems are Built to reach a price point. Bad PSU or improper plug insertion. Lots to be said for reading Manufacturers Specs too and following directions! Those lights do nothing for Performance! The last spinning Hard Drive We lost was a WD. First one to go bad in over 20 years! I feel Your pain! Experience is the best teacher! And if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Thanks for Sharing! Hi Srini Attaliri, Welcome! From what We've seen, the WD Black SN850 Tested hotter than the Samsung 980 Pro. And that was why We used the WD Black SN850 for the majority of Our Tests. How much hotter? By a Degree or Two, Celsius. The JEYI Finscold 007 was a better Performing M.2 NVMe PCIe Heatsink than this Design. Hope that helps! Heatsinks with greater surface area running lengthwise tended to Perform better if any generalities could be made. Hope that helps!

Hi@@sriniattaluri9388, In each Test, We used the Default Configuration of Thermal Pads. Those appeared to be 1mm in thickness with enough Compression to allow for unevenness as You have mentioned. Hope that helps.
