Genji and Hanzo are from the Shimada Clan, a clan of assassins and deals with illegal stuff (I cannot recall if it is weapon dealings) - although they aren’t completely bad since by upbringing of the two you can tell they were raised well, and for a yakuza clan they still care about their place (Hanamura) based on Kiriko’s story (Yokai). Hanzo as the older son is also the heir so he takes his role seriously while Genji grew up as mischievous, playboy not really wanting to participate in the clan’s business. Their father kinda tolerated the youngest until he died where Hanzo was suppose to take his place. The elders of their clan saw Genji as a liability and if Hanzo cannot get his brother straight he is told to kill Genji, and so that happened. Hanzo thought he killed Genji and later because of guilt he abandoned the clan, coming back to the Shimada castle every year to pay his respects (the feather was Genji’s trademark I believe as he was called “Sparrow”). Meanwhile, Genji was saved by Dr. Angela (Mercy) and they saved his life in exchange for his help in taking down the Shimada clan so Genji agreed and became a part of Overwatch/Blackwatch. After Overwatch is disbanded, Genji travelled still bitter and lost mentally and spiritually over everything that happened till he met Zenyatta who became his mentor (psychiatrist if you will now) and he is finally in peace with himself, deciding to at last confront Hanzo in that episode. That is all.
