The lore backstory of these two characters is what adds so much to the cinematic, which they don't go into at all. Hanzo use to be the best swordsman around, but after believing he killed his brother Genji during a big blowout fight after their father's death, he swore to never pickup a sword again. And the dragons thing seems to be a Shimada family trait, though it's never clarified if it is magic or tech, but only they can control it. Extra bonus fact, the Omnic that was assassinated by Widowmaker when she beat Tracer in London was named Mondatta. He was basically the MLK Jr of Omnics. He has a younger brother named Zenyatta that was the one that took in and trained Genji to find his inner peace, which is why he didn't kill his brother in revenge

I would also like to add Genji is a cyborg because overwatch saved him and gave him a new path being a part of the Blackwatch and basically using his assassin skill for “good” and after overwatch and blackwatch get shut down that is when he goes and finds his inner peace in Nepal with the Omnic monks.

Don't know if this is correct or lore but 2 things came to mind on 2 Hanzo dragons is him still finding his way or him mastering the sword as well as the bow. Also Genji sending the blue dragons back is hinting his deflect ability which also can deflect Hanzos ultimate

@@Eight8411 Hanzo is a sword master already, but here swore to never use a blade again after he thought he killed Genji

The reason for Genji forgiving Hanzo is rooted in off-screen lore. After being saved and having like 60-70% of his body replaced by cybernetics, he went to Nepal to rediscover who he is and coming to terms with his new personality under the mentorship of an Omnic named Zenyatta

The feather that Hanzo places down at the beginning and the one that appears after Genji disappears in smoke is meant to be a sparrow feather. 'Sparrow' is the nickname Genji's father gave him.

Will say I am glad both of you understood the metaphor of the dragon story. I've seen a number of people react to Dragons and so many of them suddenly think Hanzo and Genjii are both the ACTUAL dragons from the story. Rather than realizing it's just meant as a storytelling device and in universe a tale their father told them.

The reason Hanzo has two blue dragons is when he "killed" his brother, he took his power, much like _The Dragon of The South Wind_ did to _The Dragon of the North Wind._ Presumably in their years estranged during his quest for meaning in life, Genji regains much of his own lost power.

The sort-of high-level overview of the backstory of Dragons is that Hanzo and Genji were brothers born into a family of assassins and mob bosses. Hanzo was expected to take over the family, so Genji wasted most of his time on luxury and was generally an embarrassment to the family. When their father, Sojiro, died unexpectedly, the clan elders ordered Hanzo to reign Genji in. The argument eventually turned into a full-blown fight and Hanzo was forced to mortally wound Genji, which Hanzo believed Genji died from. Hanzo was torn over having killed Genji, so he left the Shimada clan, becoming an exile. Genji survived his injuries, and was brought on by Overwatch, who offered to rebuild Genji's body in exchange for his help in dismantling the Shimada criminal empire, which Genji accepted. After Overwatch collapsed, Genji travelled the world, eventually meeting the Omnic monk Zenyatta, who helped Genji come to terms with his cybernetic body. Last we heard of Genji and Hanzo, Genji was helping out a reformed Overwatch, while Hanzo had become an assassin for hire. As for the dragons they seem to be able to summon, it's unclear whether they are magic or if there's simply some technology at work at here. The majority of the community seems to believe they're magic, but I'm not convinced one way or the other. But, given that this is a world where some people can turn themselves into clouds of smoke and then reform their bodies with seemingly no adverse effects, at that point I'd say pretty much anything is possible. After all, as the saying goes, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

The story being told is how the first shimada brothers came about way before genj and Hanzo’s time. They were dragons and became human through their emotions, something along that line. As time passed their story was told throughout all their bloodline like a fairy tale and so that’s why in the beginning the person telling the story is Hanzo and genjis dad, and he told his sons that story before he died if I’m not mistaken.
@Souledex3 жыл бұрын
I definitely think it’s some bleeding edge nanotech and hardlight that would have been illegal to experiment on to get to a point that it worked. We have seen plenty of other hard light in the Overwatch setting and as someone who likes the “it’s all technically science even if every time someone has super powers it seems like a one in a quintillion chance it would have worked out that way” trope that seems like the best in universe explanation.

As dramatic as it sounds, the two of you are truly pioneers in the video games space by viscerally and candidly reacting to gaming content and showing that combat-driven media can be emotionally charged. You really help out the more optimistic side of the gaming community ❤️

I'll never get over that moment before Hanzo uses the dragons. The "you dare lecture me about honour" is a give or take, almost too expected. Besides all lore everyone said, there is a fan theory about Japan (or at least the Shimada clan in particular) being something like omnic-phobic. Hanzo kills just the only omnic guard, and when exposed to Genji, he just asks: "What have you... become?" with a certain disgust in his voice.
@Underworlder53 жыл бұрын
i think that "what have you become" just comes from the shock that his brother is alive and completely different. only the omnic being killed might be for censorship reasons. note that human kills tend to be somewhat...cleaner and more hidden, while omnic deaths are more graphic

The bit said about Rise and Shine at the end is something that beautifully encapsulates why we all love these Overwatch Cinematics so much. Each one is very character-driven, and each one has characters that, on some level, people relate to. For Mei in Rise and Shine, it's that feeling of isolation and overcoming both internal hopelessness and external circumstance. For Dragons, it's the struggle of family, betrayal, regret, and forgiveness. No matter who you are, there are aspects of every character that you can relate to (some more than others, obviously, depending on your own experiences). And it's why fans of these cinematics get so excited about others seeing them for the first time; we love seeing people new to these characters find the ones they connect with.

I know i'm about 2 years late on this - but as a fun little aside, but the narrator is Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, famously known for his role as Shang Tsung in the original Mortal Kombat film in the 90s, which he later reprised in the web series Mortal Kombat Legacy in 2013, and in the video game Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019. Also, a lot of the "damage" done to the Hanamura temple by both Hanzo and Genji show up in the game on this map, like when the arrows went through the big light post at 4:48, and all the arrows from the scatter shot are in the walls/floor of that lower area. The balcony guardrail is also broken in-game. Apologies if they've been mentioned before (not gonna scroll through 2 years of comments).

genji was basically dead but got saved by a healer called mercy..but rhe only way they could save him is by melding his consciousness into a half cyborg body. genji is a shimada who really value their body and training a lot so it was so hard for him to except what happened and what he has become. he went on a finding himself again mission which he ended up in Nepal where he met an omnic called zenyatta. zenyatta is an enlightened consciousness on a level fee are on the planet and he helped genji find peace. hanzo vowed to never use a sword again after striking down his brother in an argument. the problem was that genji and hanzo were supposed to take over the shimada clan together and rule their empire...but genji was a bit of a loose cannon playboy who didn't want the responsibly. so under pressure from the clan hanzo was trying to bring him into check... which ended in genji getting beatdown because hanzo was arguably the best swordsman on the planet. now genji has returned as this cyborg and hanzo is conflicted... is this thing actually his brother? or disrespectful imitation? remember the shimada really value the body and don't respect omnics as real value like humans ... could he really kill his brother again? can he accept him in this form? can hanzo pick up a sword and become an enlightened force for good? and that's why there's the tension at the end, hanzo is torn. u guys seem like the nicest ppl and u pick up a lot on the tone of things as well. keep it up 👍

One of my favorites for sure , this is great , love when game / stories add some lessons for younger generation to look up to. I have a brother and 2 sisters so this was closer to me since as a kids I always fought my brother :( but not anymore of course barely see him this days so i value him more. People don't realize how much close once mean to you untill you lose it , but once you lose them it's too late! "Think about that BROTHER"

I just found out that Genji's head, torso, left arm and both legs above the knees are all still organic. I always imagined that his head is the only thing that survived after Hanzo decapitated him.

If Blizzard comes to need to change Hanzo's name, Badass Hawkeye is a valid suggestion.

You know, watching this cinematic for the umpteenth time has granted me some new insight. Throughout the cinematic, there's hints throughout the fight that the masked intruder is indeed Genji. Note how Hanzo's opponent psychoanalyses him throughout the fight, especially how Hanzo felt he had to kill Genji to maintain honor. Yes, if he were an assassin sent by the Shimadas, they'd probably be willing to tell him what happened, and he could have merely used that against Hanzo. But the Shimadas could not have given Genji such a deep understanding of his own brother's mind. Look back on how clearly stressed Hanzo is throughout the fight. You can see the anger on his face as this intruder lambasts him on his past deeds. And the guy knew EXACTLY where to hit Hanzo, too-look especially how surprised Hanzo is when Genji name drops him. That, to me, is Genji's own understanding, for how could anyone but a person so close to Hanzo read his emotions so accurately-and know EXACTLY what to say to get under his skin? Next, we come to Genji's line: "I know you come here, every year, on the same day." Yes, this could be an assassin who's really done his homework, but I doubt the Shimadas would be so lenient on time. Hanzo had been causing the Shimadas no end of strife over the past year, and it'd be an embarrassment to such a traditional family to have their eldest son be trashing their operations. But Genji wouldn't have to worry about time. As far as the Shimadas knew, he was already dead. And to add to that, Shimada Castle was Genji's home, too. Genji may have even went looking for Hanzo whenever he had time. What better place to start than home? Now, granted, Genji actually discovering Hanzo there for the first time(BEFORE the cinematic, I must add-Genji knew Hanzo would show up that night) may have just been pure luck. But even if it had been luck, it wouldn't take Genji much to realize the significance. It's kinda hard to forget the day you almost died. All it'd take is a few additional trips to Shimada Castle at around the same day every year to confirm Hanzo's new nocturnal activities.

I love Ken's reaction when Hanzo used his dragons. Had the same reaction when i saw it for the first time. If you like the character Hanzo, i would advise to watch: Dragons of the Nexus from Heroes of the Storm.
