In this raw & unedited video, I travel from JFK Airport Terminal 5 (JetBlue Terminal) to Midtown Manhattan. I explain travel tips, how to purchase a MetroCard for the public transportation system, show the transit options, and also list the factors why taking alternative routes may be better than the AirTrain & subway.

I did this exact trip in Feb of this year. It was my first time in NY, the funny part was someone asked me if the E train was the correct one to take to Manhattan. When it pulled up I told them this is it, I learned it from watching youtube videos. Its super easy and a good value.

Awesome! Keep in mind the fare for the AirTrain increased to $7.75 now. You can pay only $2.75 by taking the Q10 bus at Terminal 5 and transferring to the subway at Lefferts Boulevard.

Want to add some things: You can buy a MetroCard at the “Hudson News” vendors inside the airport. The MetroCards purchased here are not subject to the $1 new card fee. Purchasing a MetroCard from the machines at the airport or subway station, and the ticket booth at the subway station are subject to the $1 new card fee. I asked a Hudson News vendor located in the arrivals section of Terminal 4, and they informed that they only sell Pay-Per-Ride MetroCards in 2 ride, 4 ride, and 8 ride denominations. When using a Pay Per Ride MetroCard (currently $2.75 each ride), you get one free transfer between the bus and the subway, as long as the transfer is made within 2 hours of the first use. It is possible to skip the $5.00 AirTrain fee entirely (going up to $7.75 in November 2019) by taking the Q10 or B15 public bus and transferring to the subway. You can also walk from the Lefferts Boulevard AirTrain Station to the Aqueduct - North Conduit Avenue (A) Train Station. This takes around 20 minutes but isn't something I would recommend. When using an Unlimited Ride MetroCard, everyone in your party will need to purchase one. You will need to wait 18 minutes between uses on the same bus route or subway station so the card can’t be shared. Subway service on the weekends is usually different than the weekdays do to planned maintenance and service changes. This website is amazing for showing the service changes on the weekends and the author updates it every Friday: subwayweekender.wordpress.com Be wary of illegal taxis and car services at the airport, who may charge higher fares. You can always see if a driver is licensed by checking their credentials inside the vehicle. I used to take the NYC airport bus for $35 round trip from JFK to 41st one block south of Grand Central Terminal. Not cheap but at night it was fast - one time at night it took 20 minutes to get to Manhattan ( no traffic on the Van Wyck and the speed must have been 70 mph) but during the day it could take 90 minutes. Now they have cut back their hours to 11 am to 7 pm. I will probably take a taxi next time.

I have done this journey several times now and so wish I had had the opportunity of this excellent video beforehand. Arriving at JFK is frustrating - the immigration process feels just that. They are processing you and if you are not sure or are tired after a long flight it can feel a bit aggressive. Don't be afraid to ask though, most staff are friendly and helpful once you say you are confused. The whole AirTrain transfer to E train can also be confusing, Uptown? Downtown? Best advice, plan needing that bit more energy after landing and be patient. This video helps a lot

I've ridden the "Jamaica Center to JFK monorail" on a few occasions back and forth on either side of the monorail for at least 1 hour straight just to see what the train was passing by between 14:59 & 22:27. I'd simply get on the monorail at Jamaica Center and ride all the way out to JFK and back 2 or 3 times straight in 1 hour and then end for the day. 6 months later I'd do it again. That was more than 5 years ago.

These are fantastic, I can pretty much smell New York courtesy of your work. In a good way. This journey is almost exactly the one I took when I had to go there from London for work in 2013 (first time out of 5 or 6 trips there in 4 years) I'd been to New York in the 1980s when it was a very different city altogether and a pretty terrifying experience for someone who had hardly left Warrington in my then 19 years (Warrington is bleak place in the north west of England, in between Manchester and Liverpool, with absolutely nothing going for it, except easy access to motorways away from it). In the 1980s I found NYC pretty terrifying, but still more friendly than I had been expecting. TOO friendly in the case of one particular cab driver, who decided to abduct me. A short trip from my hotel near the Empire State Building to meet a friend who was in Greenwich Village, turned into me diving out of the cab somewhere in deepest Harlem / Washington Heights (I had no idea where I was at the time, just managed to work out we had not been going in the right direction) and realizing that the cab driver was actually serious when he said he was taking me back to his place 'for a shower'. I was quite pretty then, to be fair. I loved my journey on the Sky Train in 2013, the station I changed at had a big sign saying it was the birthplace of Count Basie, was that Jamaica? I had no idea where to go to get the subway, it took about 30 seconds for a passing local to help me out. What an incredible, ridiculously friendly, generally awesome city it is. It was a dull business trip, I was staying not far from the office, round the corner from Times Square. I could see the bloody office from my hotel room. Annoying. I'd picked the Intercontinental because it was opposite Birdland and I was off to the Friday Big Band session. It was also opposite a dodgy little bar, which turned out to be fine. I popped in 'for one quick beer' at 1730hrs after work, met an ex-US Marine called Kane, who had a hard time in the Lebanon and was making up for it by being super-hospitable to strangers now instead of, well, you know. Got back to the hotel (opposite) at midnight. Great city, great videos. Do more please.

Enjoyed watching this video tonight. I saw when you were on the Air Train leaving terminal 8 a UIA plane (Ukraine International Airlines). I was in New York a month ago with my family and it was my first visit to the city since I passed through on a round trip from Newark-JFK to Kiev Ukraine in 1994 on the now defunct Air Ukraine airlines. I watched tons of your videos before we visited the City. Keep up the good work.
