After sitting dormant beside John F. Kennedy International Airport’s Terminal 5 for nearly 20 years, the historic TWA Flight Center reopened May 15 as the sleek and retro-chic TWA Hotel.

At 48 years old and a aircraft technician, I love this idea of the hotel in one of the greatest if not the greatest terminal building in the world. Brings back a lot of nostalgic moments when we use to fly to Europe from JFK in the late 70s and early 80s!

This building, like so many other things, was constructed as part of the "big picture" when NY was about to host the World's Fair. (1963) I remember going through it as a kid and it was quite impressive at the time. In the same breath, I also should mention that air travel was still fairly new in that era and even though planes had been in the sky for years, it was not considered "mass transportation" as it is today. Matter of fact, in the early 60s most of the flights were not even jets!

Remember the smoking lounge in the back of TWA transatlantic flights, just hanging at the bar with a whiskey on the rocks.Time flies, lol.

I think the original architecture in the terminal was a big influence on the creation of Ape City in Planet of the Apes (1968).

Damn didn’t think it was possible to gentrify an airport, but of course in typical NYC fashion they figure it out.

not sure thats how id characterize it. A developer took a big chance and poured a lot of money into one of the great iconic buildings of the American midcentury. It had been mothballed for twenty years. Would you have preferred it to be torn down. What was the other alternative?
@BalthasarRodellega

Brad Gross isn’t that how everything works with gentrification? A “developer” took a chance. What chances can you really make as a multi billion dollar investment company in New York City near one of busiest ports of entry. That space could be used for many other things instead of some over priced hotel.

@@BalthasarRodellega so what exactly did you have in mind? A school? A police station? The profit motive is what allowed the space to be safely and beautifully preserved. The terminal was outdated 10 years after it was built. If you don't like the prices you don't have to stay there, but as far as I know its free to come inside and look around. #winwin.

Brad Gross yea or even public housing since HUD gives grants. That was obviously not a priority for them. The fact of whether I like the prices and can afford them is completely beside the point. Of course your rebuttal would be some super capitalist comment. Why doesn’t nyc developers worry about why nyc has the most segregated public school system in the nation instead of worrying about a gentrified hotel. Saying win win just shows ridiculously obsessed with dick riding the wealth of others. The only way to see a room is if you stay there. No shit it’s for profit, that’s why they could give two fucks about looking out for the community. Phony limousine liberals (conservative Democrats) always look the other way when it comes to fix the cities segregation problems. Here is a prime example of an abandoned bus terminal turned into a homeless shelter. www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-santa-ana-homeless-20161007-snap-story.html They just sold the worlds most expensive cup of coffee in the most expensive city in the world which I live in and own several properties. I know you think high prices are cool but people like Warren Buffet who lives in the house he was raised in would tell you otherwise. The more you try to justify it the more you look stupid. I love debating and you just opened a can of worms. I’m looking forward to this.

Brad Gross the fact that you gave suggestions yourself and then proceeded to try to downplay It with some disgusting capitalistic rhetoric just shows you know that the space can be used for many other purposes. Please continue to talk, because every time you do you just make my case stronger. Pat yourself on the back kiddo lol. Watch how your demeanor changes now. This is going to be fun.
