TOP TEN GREATEST ARIAS FOR BASSES 2/5

Nice choice in singers to demonstrate these arias. One of my favorites is De Angelis singing "La calunnia." He ends it with the biggest G ever heard. And his voice, as heavy as it was, played with the aria.

Mardones sung Fiesco with a high f#, quite thin (which is not in the notes) , and came down two octaves to the low F#, in the chest but not round, which shows that he was a basso cantante. He has the typical fast vibrato of this type of voice, like Pinza. Tadeo has the dark nucleus and mask of the serio. My opinion!

I presume you are not a singer. If you are a bass "Il Lacerato" is quite easy.. It is low and slow. But not so much so that it affects your breathing. The Sarastro arias for example are more difficult because they have such long phrases. In live performances often the bass will sing them faster than optimum for the music.. But Il Lacerato is all short phrases with plenty of places to get a breath. Most basses except Sam Ramey struggle with fioratura. But Il Lacerato has no high notes or runs.

Easy? I'd say something liike Masetto's "Ho capito" is fairly easy, but Fiesco?

i'm sorry for you, agorante, but Fiesco's aria is not easy to sing....it's very difficult to render it properly......from the point of view of diction, changings of time and colours.....singing is not only doing the notes, my dear......

Mardones here sings just about the worst version of Il Lacerato I've ever heard. He interpolates a very inappropriate high F# in the ending and sings the wrong words. His basic sound is unlovely. He has an intrusive vibrato like Pasero.

Ghaiurov is better than Tadeo as Seneca if not quite so low. Anybody can sing Il Lacerato Spirito - the easiest bass aria. Mardones didn't have the beauty of voice for this simple song. I'd pick Tozzi over him.
