Great review of Dylans song. His words capture the intensity of the pain we have when experiencing a lost love and although we've all been through it part of the intense pain it that we go through it alone. Thx. for sharing.

What attracts me to Dylan is not only his poetic spirit and literary skill, but also the fact that even with all of that superlative talent, he exudes what it is like to be a regular person with regular feelings and emotions and weaknesses, etc.. We can all relate to what he sings. Thanks, Pamela.

@@CalicoSilver I agree. I'm reading his Chonicles Vol. 1 and he writes like he's having a conversation with the reader. Very down to earth. A great read.

I really miss the intensity of those emotions - a sort of exhilaration of despair - feeling more wretched and more alive than ever at the same time. As you say, you know Bob felt it from this, and that's what speaks to you so clearly.

Yes, very true, Graham. But do you know what is odd, from my observation? There are quite a number of young people (in their 20s-30s) who I know very well who enter into relationships, break off relationships, and repeat and repeat.....yet they never seem to display much pain or other emotion because of it. Nor did they ever display much public affection for their mates when they were together. Maybe they are just very good at keeping all that stuff out of the public, but I honestly can't even recall ever seeing anyone under the age of 50 or so show any emotion due to a breakup. Again, maybe I am just out of the loop of such things. haha! We definitely get more numb as we get older, though. Been there, done that, I guess. But you are right - I miss intensity of emotions sometimes too. Unfortunately bad temper still manages to come out of me. I'd love to lose THAT emotion.

@@CalicoSilver " Unfortunately bad temper still manages to come out of me. I'd love to lose THAT emotion." 😄😄 My elder son (now 27) was fairly cut up when his first serious relationship ended. But I think culture has changed, and not for the better IMHO - on that at least

Thanks. Very descriptive review of a song that was written by somebody who was obviously feeling a deep loss. Like you said; "Been there. Done that." In some cases; Am there. Doing that. I recommend that you check out John Winn`s version of this song on KZbin. Before he sings the song he tells a brief, but touching story of himself running into Dylan right after Dylan wrote this heartfelt song. Thanks again.

I think that anyone who has "been there" is a doubly-blessed fortunate soul. Not only to have experienced that level of intimacy, but to be able to relate to great art that tries to describe it. Thanks, Taya.

written before hearing your comments (more fun) Not much to say about these lyrics I suppose Pretty straightforward. The state of mind of the troubadour after an intense love relationship. The refrain reminds me of the idea of wholeness (in this case naturally :only half) Tomorrow Is a Long Time reminds me of a line in another Dylan song : ,,Yet every distance is not near,, He cannot see his own reflection: Yet I see my reflection SO high above this wall (wall being tommorrow ) You know of course which song I am referring to . Thoughin this case redemption comes when reaching tomorrow see you around Jeff

I didn't think I'd have much to say about such straightforward lyrics either, Alexander, but the more I thought about them, the more depth I saw in them (or at least, the more ideas they drummed up in my head). So I really enjoyed talking about the song. The one thing I forgot to mention was the line "then lonesome would mean nothing to you at all" and how "lonely" and "lonesome" are two very different things......but I think we all know that anyway. Great call on the I Shall Be Released lyric! Brilliant. Thanks!! Jeff

Wonder song & Great heartfelt review as usual. But perhaps there are other ways to hear it: if she was really his own true love, perhaps she is traveling or is not with him for a different reason. Not to be morbid, but maybe she has died.

Oooh, I like it! Interesting take on it, Sherrie. Makes me think. I really appreciate people commenting with their interpretive takes on these songs. I view Dylan's lyrics as poetry in the finest sense in that it can speak to each of us in different ways. Thanks for your input! Happy New Year to you. Jeff
