The Captain was incredible on this album. Every song a gem. Most people do not get Don. But his genius shines through on every album. “Glider” is just spectacular.

I certainly wouldn't call the likes of "Click Clack" anemic. "Blabber n Smoke" is my favorite track on the album. Love the "air" in that one--those pauses--and the message. Clean up the air and treat the an-ee-mals fair.
@CalicoSilver3 жыл бұрын
Haha, I never liked that silly "treat the an-nee-mals fair" thing, haha. But yeah, it is a great album and this song is good also with its spatial aspects, something I've loved about much of Beefheart's albums....the sense of space and rhythmically syncopated ingenuity. Thanks, Michael.

"The band failed miserably" Haha! Classic CB. These guys are saints for putting up with him for so long. French's returning must have been some kind of Stockholm syndrome. Great album, maybe just a little too bluesy for my taste. It's part of the same spell as Clear Spot, which is my favorite album, so it's a fine line I guess. As a singer and harmonica player he's probably at his peak here. Artistically it falls a little short of his best albums, but it's still a great one. "When it blows it stacks" is my top track (too).

I sorta understand where Harkleroad was coming from here, Dieter. I enjoy the album myself but there are times when listening to it when I think, "this must be a bit boring to play" (as the band opined). But even bad Beefheart albums are enjoyable.....except "Unconditionally Guaranteed".....and maybe except "Bluejeans and Moonbeams" (neither of which are on any of my rotation shelves.....they are stored away in never-listen boxes).

I love TROUT MASK REPLICA and I love this record just as much, along with the rest of the REPRISE catalogue. Got to hear this record played after Ian Anderson got Vliet and Band to open up for his THICK AS A BRICK tour. No question - one was brave to let these guys open the show - at least as far as for music lovers. In Atlanta - it went over their heads but for those who were ready for this I feel sure it has remained a highlight of their musical lives. Jethro Tull were great but THICK AS A BRICK was even sillier than AQUALUNG and this became their trajectory. Sadly. This is and was a great record.

Thanks for your great comment. Yes I would have loved to have seen the Beefheart band perform live. Great!! And yes, even though I was a fan of Jethro Tull back then, the silliness eventually got to me too.

i liked 'spotlight kid'...it did seem a bit 'less beefheart' coming after 'clear spot'...but with a unique personality such as don van vliet, there should never have been any expectation of repetition....and the harp blowing is still in the pocket, maybe even more so....and 'booglarize' is such a perfect way to start it off....it gets you in the groove you are about to receive....even gravel roads go slower now and then......peace always my friend...rocky

I love this album, good review, but there are some errors he made: on "I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby" Elliot Ingber opened up with that guitar part. Harkleroad played the slide part that came in a moment later. Also, he listed the titles wrong for "Blabber 'n Smoke" and "Alice in Blunderland".

I didn't see a review among your videos, but maybe I missed it - just wondering about your thoughts on Bluejeans & Moonbeams. It doesn't get much love in the discography.

Hello Calvin. I haven’t yet reviewed that album but yes I agree it is better than its reputation. I don’t care for Unconditionally Guaranteed but I do enjoy Bluejeans And Moonbeams. I talked a bit about both in my video about the Beefheart Discography.

i like the album , more than decals certainly .....i think the looser bluesier sound complements beefhearts aesthetic very well . grow fins is one of my fav sleeper tracks of his. btw i disagree with your assessment of 'white jam ' .....his vocal delivery on the song is hilarious and really conveys a sense of disorientation and befuddlement . that alone makes it great
@CalicoSilver3 жыл бұрын
Good point about White Jam. Yes I can see what you mean about the aimless rambling of the vocals during the last half of the song being related to the disorientation prompted by the ingestion of whatever "white jam" means. Haha! And yeah, "Grow Fins" is great!!

It is rather lethargic. Beefheart and Trump had a lot of personality traits in common.
