As a person who is born and brought up in jharia and is also currently residing in jharia- the situation of coal dust is severe. Lately people have also started developing breathing issues and we live in constant fear of when the land nearby may sink. Also, for people like us who come from a decent family can shift and start a new life but for those people who cannot afford to buy land and start a new life, its way more hell for them. Constant power cuts for upto 12-14 hours, sometimes no water supply for days is also something we even have to face. Definitely this needs to be taken up by mainstream media. Being a Mining Engineer, I have known this from the very beginning. It all(fire) stated in the mid 1800s when the rights of all the Coal was under EIC and one day a big business man from Gujarat decided to run a coal min in Jharia. The clash was of another level and the EIC tried to destroy the mine and smoked it with fire. Since then jharia is burning underground. This is one of the theory how the fire started. And the most relevant one. Secondly, it's almost impossible to stop the fire but better measures can be undertaken. There's always scope for betterment. But the current situation is that the ministers don't care. It's a matter of National Security and National Welfare. Lastly the coal if mined properly can result in a great boom for the power supply as well as economic benefits to the country. As majority of the Coking Coal is exported from Australia. Anthracite is the best coal that we find majorly in jharia. So India can also achieve a financial boom in the coming years but it won't be that easy. A self powered nation running of green energy is also a mainstream practice nowadays which is essential too. So that's why I think people have been ignorant of coal energy lately.

I am from West Bengal. I used to work here as a govt employee in railways beside jharia ... I have seen such cracks even beside roads... There is a big problem of water crisis... I have seen people bath & wash their cloths with drainage water.. Many of them drinks pond's water . I was speechless... Now i changed my job & shifted in WB. I have many frnds in jharia ... I hope there living condition improve with the help of govt.

As a resident of Jharia for over 30 years, I can assure you not even 10% of the allocated amount was used to “douse the fire”. A lot of big trusted private players who assured to stop the fire and create a better livelihood for the residents were restricted to enter the market, due to prevailing corruption. This was shown in Gangs of Wasseypur as well. This happens on a very large scale. I'm from Odisha. Here, the government had to incur a huge expense to refill the mines properly. The IAS and OAS officers who were corrupt and did all the damage have still not been arrested.

Jharia case is different jharia is burning since 1800s the Britishers did nothing and Indian government is also doing the same thing from the start they keep mining in this area for coal this thing increased the burning speed of the coal because the supply of oxygen increased rapidly due to mining and if they stop mining in this area and fill most of the open area then jharia will stop sinking for sometime but that thing will cost other states power lack and other things so they will keep doing what birtishers did to India and they will keep exploiting jharkhand for the others good when I see what jharkhand is facing I can say that even the freedom could not give freedom to jharkhand

Listen Me- born and broughtup in dhanbad, the COAL CAPITAL OF INDIA, also nearest Maithon Dam producing capacity of 60,000 KW, there is so much frequent power cut, loads of corruption, lack of education, lack of jobs and employment and these poor people living in jharia, it's so heartbreaking to see Dhanbad is providing electricity to other states but it's own people are not having roof and electricity. No proper strong leader or govt is there since jharkhand has become a new state in the 2000. Hope to get a strong leader someone like Andhra, UP, orissa nd gujrat ! A few years back one shopkeeper along with his child died due to landslide there are several cases of landslides in jharia, we all are here living in fear still nobody talks about it. I am not following this news much but as I am from dhanbad I can relate to this. Its very true and so correct. No one has done anything for this issue yet. BCCL TOOK ELECTRICITY FROM DVC IN CREDIT NOW CREDIT AMOUNT IS SO MUCH HIGH THAT BCCL NOT ABLE TO Settle Down THE DUE AMOUNT TO DVC. Many govt. Come and go but as this is the major issue for Dhanbad. JMM is the party who serve in jharkhand most of the time. Currently they are only serving earlier BJP govt. Was there, they also didn't do anything on this issue. This issue needs to be highlighted as many people's lives are in danger.

Today the extent of ignorance has reached to the level that we humans are at the edge of disaster. Dhanbad city of Jharkhand is a hub of almost 30 percent of coal energy in India but continuous extraction without looking at the end result means making life of many in danger. Dhanbad district of Jharkhand is not only facing this but a lot more like water crisis . Many have to wait for days to get a bucket of water because there is nothing but fire inside the land of Jharkhand. Govt must look at and main onus is on the power ministry to look at renewable sources of energy at immediate effect as before carbon emissions , there is a great threat of life of those living near the radius of extraction . Great work , I am from nearest village area, I know,situation even worst here.Issues aren't limited to these, due to illigal coal transportation,air become extremely polluted in the whole area, underground water layer also depleting because of unscientific open mining. We are facing huge water crisis in summer ,not getting any help from govt. or any mining companies like BCCI .We are unable to walk in the road due to extreme coal dust and BCCL or govt. even not taking responsibility to spray water daily in the road.Our families are suffering with serious health problems.Hardly 6 to 7 hours we get electricity supply in 24 hours. Not only bastacola area, complete coal transport area is seriously effecting.If the situation will not get noticed by BCCL and govt. We villagers have no other option than migration.

This fire was started by the British before leaving India. The method to stop this fire is to stop mining coal here. It continues because new openings are constantly being made which feed oxygen to the coal continenously. If mining is stopped, new air vents won't feed oxygen to the coal inside and it will suffocate by itself due to carbon dioxide buildup.

I have been to Jharia for a film shoot and I was shocked to see the cracks in the ground through which smoke was coming out, as if it was the portal to hell. Almost every house is damaged or has cracks. Areas near the coal mines are worse and are not suitable to live in. This situation is not just in Jharia. Dhanbad to Asansol to Ranchi everywhere the lands are sinking... And all these are slums are been moved around nearby.... Muslim people are given all facilities, they're mis-using the power and doing anything they want.. Few Slums don't move when asked and later says gov doesn't do anything. They are arrogant, and shows innocence on media. Don't trust everything you see..!!

Living here since my birth, it's been 19 years almost, the coal work has vigorously increased by 300-400% in the last five years, the heaps of dust, rock, mud and waste has multiplied too much in height, for example if it was 10m earlier, then now it's 70m...Govt just wants it's task to be done, they don't care about the people living here, just 3-4 years ago there was an incident here where the land started going down and one boy was stuck there, his father tried to save him but unfortunately they both went down with the land and their bodies were never found... But still the govt gave no shit...

I live in sudamdih here is the same problem residing in main colony and casnala open mine's .. due to hevy dumping of stones from the mine's the temperature of here rise upto 40° c. Becouse of the stones are producing hevy temperature which heat up the air whole night as a result temperature rises .. .. to control this they should pore a layer of soli on it to grow some trees and plants .. it's can help to decrease the temperature 🌡️.. but no body gives attention to this ..💀

From childhood i have seen these scenarios but government is not taking any strong steps to improve the livelihood of people of jharia , corrupt leader are making money through these house scheme and poor people are dying , hoping for the day when this scenario will be changed

This is horrendous..Such a painful situation of the area which supplies power to whole of India.. Ministers sitting in AC rooms only bcz coal is getting mined by these unfortunate people.. They can easily be provided a good home.. How are other countries planning sustainable and safe mining? Why can't India and Jharkhand do it? Mining out coal at the cost of thousands of lives is never a sustainable solution.. Is the local govt not pained to see this condition? Alas coal mafias n corruption has also such strong roots dat no good minister/official can function in this area.. Central govt should ASAP take control of the situation.. Tag this issue to Twitter

I am from Dhanbad, one more issue that was not covered that how political parties appeal to these poor people not to shift and motivate them to ask for government job whit relocation this new ask from these people is also making the task more difficult. These poor people think the more they stay and hold the ground chances are to get government jobs.

I have seen as i belong to jharia, some of these houses were visited by me and when I saw that mine, i wondered. It wasa chandi temple there. It is established in a safe place now. When the burning goes heavy,, it feels like a earthquake

Not only in Jhariya but also in other jharkhand villages where coal is mined from coal mines in large quantities... But the issue is not corruption but there is more information , like every BCCL side. The Coal theft is done by the local villagers because there is no work in the village but we have to see here that the coal is very expensive in the market and if we make a guess then every villager who steals the coal daily If they earn 1000 rupees or more, then why is their poverty so much because they consume 500 rupees of domestic or foreign liquor every day out of that 1000.They buy their daily food with money, they don't save that money and use it for some good work, it's the fault of a villager. Now let's come to the local mafia, their rampage is very scary to say anything about them, they actually rule these areas, they use these villagers for their own gain, like shutting down the coal side for some time, To fulfill their demand form private companies, now coming to private companies they don't offer jobs to any locals we need to know why it is done, because locals never work with their 100% their to many negligency from their jobs. Now let's come to the leaders who make them leaders, we make them by voting now How do we vote? We don't vote for our own benefit, we vote for more things like small amount of money, alcohol, and some local power, and that's why we are neglected after voting. And it is not entirely the fault of the leaders and ministers, the fault lies with the common people because if they too can become leaders, then they too will choose this bad path. Our way of thinking is wrong. If this can be changed, then every person in India will have this beautiful life. We can't say again and again that corruption is happening because of some ministers . it is the result of negligence people like us.

This is a very serious issue and the condition is getting worst day by day. I am from Dhanbad and frequently heard about the mishap happening in Jharia.. and people suffering in jharia from this severe conditions. Government extracting coals and minerals and paying high salary to there employees, but doing nothing for poor people. Financially strong people's and families are emigrating from jharia but the poor people and people belongs to poverty line are unable to do so. Extraction of coals and minerals are being more important than poor people life in the materialistic world........ neither state government nor any leaders are doing anything about this serious issues... they only want votes on election for them. I want to thanks🙏 'The Quint' from the bottom of my heart to make vedio on such a serious issue.
