Blown away by the complexity of these engines, what a design marvel. Apart from the decision to include plastic guides of course

Or poorly design the seals for literally every seam so every single one of these cars gushes oil out of it if you dont replace the seals every other oil change. On top of replacing the oil every 6 months. Its a very interesting engine design. Not a very good one.

Great video to watch for fun. I did my own timing chains a little bit before this video came out, and I had to do it twice, because my chain had either stretched a little bit or even jumped timing when both of my guides broke (the one you show broken in the video, and the top guide for the main chain broke on mine also), And I did not check with a mirror when inserting the crank pin, I just threaded it in and tightened it. it must have missed the hole because after getting it all put together and back in the car, it was immediately throwing cam/crank correlation codes even though it sounded like it ran okay. I had to pull my engine back out and do it all over again after realizing my mistake. Still running strong now over 2 years later. did my chains at 160k~ish and the car now has 179k on it. If I ever do this job again on another car I will be sure to check with a mirror the first time. again, great video.

Can you do this job without taking out the engine? Take the top bolts and sprockets from the top and work the bottom part of the job from underneath the car while being hoisted may be? Just asking because i seen it done on a BMW... but the chain had a fairly different configuration. I really like Audi RS4 and would love to own one some day, but this job freaks the crap out of me.
@1970borntorun3 жыл бұрын
I love this engine and am considering a 2006 S4 as we speak. HOWEVER ( !! lol ) You guys have to know that for this job, you'll need to pull the engine and access it from the rear by the Firewall. This is about $4500 - $7000 in Parts/Labor at a good European Mechanic shop. So, unless you have a lot of money laying around ( or are a very good Mechanic! ) if this happens, you may want to consider the B8 Generation with the Supercharged V6. I agree that the the B7 has much more character and far better steering feel, but that repair is a very sobering thing to ponder :)

Is this the same engine as in an RS5? And what about the R8 v8 4.2? I know the engine has to be removed for both of these cars, but once the engine is out, is the procedure the same? Thanks Also, bad design of the camshafts to have the wrench flats on the opposite end of the camshaft. That’s a lot of torque to be transmitted through the length of the cams. The wrench flats should have been right next to the pulleys, in my opinion.
@JHMotorsportsInc4 жыл бұрын
This engine is not the same as the 32V FSI 4.2 V8 found in the R8, RS5 or RS4. The B6/B7 S4 has a 40v non direct injection engine. Typically on the FSI engines we do not see timing failures like on the 40v engines. The job would be very similar between any of the Audi timing chain V8's.

Hi. Nice video.. wondering , how much on average this job cost? Thanks.

Typically timing chain jobs will range from 6-12K depending on what other service is performed while the engine is out. Almost always there will be coolant hoses and other various seals/gaskets that are recommended.
