This just in... I was out of town for four nights and neglected to make my Flomax tablets with me. The first day I was fine but the other three days and nights were horrible. I was up five times per night to empty my bladder and I felt like I had to go again immediately thereafter. On a couple of my morning hikes I nearly didn't make it to a toilet. In fact, I was so desperate I had to duck behind some trees to do my business. Enough said, I guess, but I hope this testimony will remind others in similar conditions: Take ALL your meds on overnight trips. Best to you all...

All very good information. However, the elephant in the room is not mentioned. i.e. If you are taking Flowmax you MUST MUST be given annual PSA tests to monitor risk of prostate cancer. Flowmax not only relieves the symptoms of BPH but it also relieves the first symptoms of prostate cancer. i.e. Difficulty urinating. I took Flowmax and Finnasteride for 5 years. I got progressively worse haemospermia. My GP just kept repeating "come back in 3 months if it gets worse". After annual check ups, I finally gave up and asked to be referred privately. My GP said I was wasting my money. The first thing I was asked by the specialist was if I had PSA tests. Given that I had not, he included PSA in a battery of tests. PSA was very high and prostate cancer was diagnosed. I stopped taking the flowmax and finnasteride 3 months before my prostatectomy. My Haemospermia (note 1) recovered within a week. A post operation biopsy of my prostate showed that my cancer was nearly at the point of break out. I had literally weeks of margin. I made a 100% recovery without any real ill effects. It is impossible to believe how lucky I was. You might not be. Don't be brow beaten by your GP about PSA tests being a waste of time. Annual PSA tests are your only early warning if you take Flowmax. (Note 1. I filled in a "Yellow" medicines side effects form. The form went into the records black hole. Nothing done and no follow up on this or the PSA testing. Haemospermia and the need for PSA testing was ridiculed so I wasted my time filling out the form).

Doctors don't even want to do PSA tests anymore. Too many false positives they say. At a certain age they start telling you, "Prostate cancer isn't a concern. Even if you have it, you'll likely die of something else before it kills you!"

About 3 in 4 men with a raised PSA level will not have cancer and around 1 in 7 men with a normal PSA level will have prostate cancer.
@andreww159
@andreww159 Жыл бұрын
@@allumpfa This is another key factor that medical staff are very quick to tell you. However, they are missing the other herd of elephants in the room. Diagnosing prostate cancer is about the rate of rise of PSA level above YOUR normal level. The absolute level depends on the individual. Some men are naturally HIGH. Some are naturally LOW. A single PSA test is a waste of time to some degree for diagnosing cancer - within a fairly wide range of values. You need to know YOUR normal PSA level AND YOUR age related rise of PSA. Cancer will accelerate the age related rise - this is what you are looking for. Don't be taken in by the medical agenda. You are 1 in 10,000 other patients as far as your GP is concerned. To YOU you are ONE of ONE.

Enlarged Prostate due to Locally Advanced Prostate Cancer. Have taken Flomax since diagnosis & was having trouble with blood pressure dropping around about 11 am everyday after taking the tablet as suggested after breakfast. Switch to after the evening meal ( we eat at a regular time being retired) and have to say no problems since even when going through Chemo/Brachytherapy & 28 bouts of Radiotherapy. Cancer has been held back after original terminal diagnosis predicted was 2 years. Still going into my 5th.

My PSA was 27, so i had two round of HR Brachy Therapy in four days. Just shy of 2 years since, the PSA is down to 1.2. It was caught early and hadn't spread. I'm on Flomax every other day. I do have some of side effects, but no girl friend at the moment. I don't have any pressure, and can't force out the urine any faster than it wants to flow. Does anyone else have that problem? I was told that I may have BPH, having nothing to do with the cancer. IDK how long I'll need the Flomax. I have heard of a "balloon" treatment, to open the urethra, if that is still used.
@avs4365

@@elultimo102 Glad to see the lower PSA, mine's been negligible since ending the Chemo three years back. Have heard of the balloon but no experience of it. Catheterization was used after the Brachy on & off for a couple of years but clear now, know a couple of guys who do self catherate which eases retention. I double void. Sexual side hasn't been problem. Three years of hormone treatment has voided any chance there and being old can't be bothered with all the pumps and paraphernalia needed. Wishing you well.

I took Tamsulosin for about a month. It decreased my libido, reduced my orgasms to a somewhat "meh" level of pleasure, and eliminated semen in my ejaculations. It did help with the frequent urination at night, but the cost was too great to my sexual well-being. I stopped taking it and a week later my sexual function was back to near normal. A month after stopping, all my sexual function has returned.

My experience with tamsulosin included the onset of ED. And when my urologist added finasteride is when my dizziness and instability started. My advice, stay away from both these old medications. Drs. like to turn to these the moment you walk into their offices. I used these meds for three years before reading the truth. I stopped them on my own last summer and my instability and dizziness are gone. Now I've learned they can stay in your system for years.

Tamsulosin works on relaxing tissue, this medication gave me severe "Ice Cream" headaches. For years I had to sleep sitting up, as when I would lie down, within 30 minutes I would have a serious headache. My doctor sent me to several specialists, and none could help me. Only when I understood how it worked did I get the idea that Tamsulosin might be a cause. I stopped the medication and within a few days I no longer had these headaches. Apparently the tissue in my sinuses relaxed and closed off the drainage of fluid, causing pressure felt behind my eyes. At least this is what I think. Not everything is understood by you professionals, and the drug companies will not tell us all they know. I have had other bad experiences with medications, and do not rely on anyone but myself anymore.

i started taking Tamsulosin when prescribed by a urologist years ago when I was only 49 when I complained of urgency only after I had surgery for a hernia. He said it was my prostate was enlarged and giving me problems. I also experienced a pain and numbness from the surgery. I was told that taking tamsulosin would help both the pain and the urgency. Biggest mistake I ever did! while it did help with the pain and discomfort i was feeling. It also killed my sex life! It caused my wife distress because she thought that I wasn't interested in her any more. Years went by and i quit taking the crap. It never helped with the urgency and the pain I was having subsided. Still having the urgency issue I read about a drug that treated a weak bladder. I started using oxybutin and the urgency issue is gone! I suspect that my bladder was what should have been addressed all along instead of my prostate. Now at 69 my prostate is fine!

I kept passing out when I first started taking tamsulosin and finasteride but it was because I was also taking medication to lower my blood pressure. Once I stopped the blood pressure meds I stopped passing out. After TURP surgery I couldn't pee each time they took the foley catheter out and after several months of living in hell with the foley catheter I decided on my own to self catheter and within as week I could pee without any catheter. The surgeon who not only screwed up my TURP surgery and caused me to have a second surgery to stop the blooding said I might need the foley catheter for the rest of my life.

The prostate cancer ruined my sex life but considering the consequences... I had 45 days of radiation and my PSA was only at 5 when I started. I strongly recommend prostate exams annually. I have suffered from 'nocturia' for about 25 years. I get up about six times every night, about once every hour. During the day I never have to pee more than once or twice. It only happens when I lie down. Nobody can explain that. Have taken Duodart (dutasteride+tamsulosin) at one time and reduced my PSA from 6 to about 3. However, shock and horror! My last blood test showed a PSA of 16! Good God, sixteen! How is that possible? Is there even such a number? Again had the usual bladder scan and the rectal examination (the finger!) but shows an enlarged prostate of 76cc, a bladder reduced in size (I am 82 years old, so what else is new!) and nothing more. I have no 'symptoms', whatever they may be, and do not even know that I have a prostate. Lately I have again taken Duodart to lower my PSA but after three weeks started to go blind in my left eye, and seeing all sorts of shapes and what they call 'auras' dancing in my field of vision. Stopped taking the stuff at once and am now slowly regaining my eyesight. What next ? Will try one of the 'herbs and spices' like Prostacor that comes highly recommended and will see. I am desperate and will try anything! I have no problem passing urine, it is just the frequency, mainly at night that is a perpetual problem. Any suggestions from anyone?
