@@profvonshredder2563 it's the pedal...with a little bit of fingers and real knowledge of tone (plus having amps like Mesa/Vox/Marshall really helps - tube primarily)...had a Wampler plexi, then a JHS Angry CHarlie, then both versions of AT pedal (currently having only the AT+ and the Angry Charlie)..it is that good and smooth...very controlable...but you need to know how to dial in a tone..otherwise...nothing can help a person..not even the most expensive and the exact gear an artist has. Cheers!

you can get it even smoother and a bit darker...it's amazing..just lower the AIR and keep the EQ where it is...or getting it a bit higher..and lowering the AIR even more.

Harry, excellent demo and playing. Thanks for taking the time to do the review. How much of the tone in the demo is the pedal, vs. the Ibanez AT vs. the Lonestar amp setting? Sort of impossible to answer I understand, but I'm wondering what sorts of tone it would produce with a different guitar and amp setup.

Chris Davies Ok clear. I'm always focusing on how colors (intervals) work against a given chord in a certain context (key). That way you learn how to focus on what an interval does in a certain context and focus less on scales. I'll see what I can do for you in a future tutorial

Fine demo, as usual. To me the modes don't sound all that different. Seems to me to be more of a player's feel thing, am I right? Other than the virtual wattage thing has the tone been modified compared to the Angry Charlie?

Thanks! It's a lot about feel but also about the amount of compression and the clipping slightly changes the tonal response.

Really superb playing and wonderful sound! I'm using the AT myself with a Bogner Goldfinger 45 Amp (which I saw standing behind you). Soundwise I'm quite happy with it but I get a very noticeable amount of hiss if I set the AT like your's in the Demo! What is your experience with hiss and is there a gate involved in the axe-fx?
@xogmusic7 жыл бұрын
Martin Gruber I didn’t notice an extensive amount of hiss. No noise gate active in the Axe Fx. Which channel of the GF are you using? Did you try a different power supply? That can cause his as well
@martingruber51177 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your quick answer. I use the AT in the Pre-Loop of the Goldfinger either with low gain setting (more as a booster) in the Omega 80's channel or with higher gain setting in the Omega 69 channel. For the clean Alpha channel I have one bright switch engaged, so its not the best combination with the AT. The power supply is a OneSpot Pro CS12, which I think is a very good one. It has solved any problems with hum for me.
@xogmusic7 жыл бұрын
Mmm, never used the preloop. Try it before the input if that makes a difference? What you hear in the demo noise wise is what I got from the pedal as noise. Not excessive IMO
@martingruber51177 жыл бұрын
The AT in the Pre-Loop is cool to use because I can switch from a crunchy rythm sound to a lead sound with the amp's floorswitch (Boost Switch) but am still able to switch to the clean channel with one step on the channel switch. But I will try the AT before the amp to see if there's a difference (I think the pedals I tried before in the Pre-Loop were darker sounding). Thanks again for your advice.

Does anyone know how the Andy Timmons "mod" is voiced differently as compared to the stock Angry Charlie? Regarding (JHS' own description of) the EQ and Air controls, what does "more natural" mean? That's all they've said about it. Is this the tamed, sweetened, smoothed out version of the Angry Charlie!? I'm not getting this if it doesn't give me that gritty, edgy GRIND I want from the Angry Charlie. But if the @ is all the Angry Charlie is and then some, then this pedal is to die for!
@xogmusic9 жыл бұрын
More natural is probably related to the response and range of the EQ and Air knobs. To me the response of the pedal is very amp like with the different headroom switch options. The AT pedal has a great amount of drive/gain and it can still sound aggressive when increasing the EQ and Air knobs depending on what you're looking for in the pedal. Overall I really dig this pedal a lot!
@luckylicks34979 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response, Harry! I'm waiting like crazy for anyone out there to do a comparison between the AT and the AC. I'm planning on getting the AT as soon as someone convinces me it's not a tamed down version of the AC, meaning that you get all the edge, grit, spit and grime you would from a cranked AC!
@martino2505709 жыл бұрын

Great demo, but why into a modeling system? That’s not how 90% of the players would probably use it.
@xogmusic6 жыл бұрын
Frank Schreuders It doesn’t matter if you use an amp or a quality modeler. This helps to show that the pedal works via a modeler as well and the Axe Fx behaves closely as a real Lonestar. If it sounds good it is good.
@frankschreuders59066 жыл бұрын
I agree, but the difference in tone and dynamics between a real amp and a modeler cannot be denied. What I mean is, in my opinion, the modeler degrades this demo of a great pedal, as well of a great player. I really wonder how it sounds on a basic, well known amp like a Hot Rod Deluxe for instance.
@xogmusic6 жыл бұрын
Frank Schreuders to me the dynamics of the current firmware of the Axe Fx II are very close to a real tube amp and the difference is neglectable. Have you ever played an Axe Fx? The tone is not better through a real amp like a Fender. The Lonestar basically is very close in design to a Fender amp so the behavior of the pedal comes across very well. I’ve never had people comment about me having a bad tone so you’re splitting hairs here.
@frankschreuders59066 жыл бұрын
I am definitely not saying you have a bad tone, at all. In my search for a decent demo of the AT pedal I came across yours and really like it. Excuse me for preferring tubes :) Anyway, if I would be recording often I might be using an Axe FX or Kemper too, because of the ease of use (no micing or room issues, having presets). Besides the tone, as you describe to be very close and I agree, a modeler feels and reacts different than an amp. I have played Axe FX and Kemper through (expensive) studio monitors as well as a PA system and it just not satisfying, to me. The good thing is it’s all a matter of taste and it matters in which situation you’re using it. Keep up yours great demo’s, all I’m saying is that a purist product like this should not be demo’d on a digital rack, again, in my eyes. Didn’t mean to split hairs!
@xogmusic6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for understanding, it's just preference and ease of use. In the studio having a multitude of amps to quickly create parts is flexable. For demos it's also easy to adjust the amp model and setting for a specific pedal. All the demo's I've done for Bax have all been the Axe Fx as well BTW. :) I've used a Bogner Goldfinger 45 head into a Powerstation and IRs and it didn't sound better than the Axe Fx TBH. With the added speaker compression in the Axe Fx the behavior of modelers comes very close to tubes. I don't have an issue to play dynamically with the Axe Fx and I'm happy to use it. BTW, more and more demonstrators (Brett Kingman and others) are using the Axe Fx for ease of use. ;)
