1:00:35 I'm sorry to break stereotypes, but many people in the USSR listened to the Beatles, including my father, an ordinary Soviet engineer, and Picasso painted the doves of peace, a symbol widely replicated in the USSR and he even had an exhibition in Moscow. Not just the Beatles, we had records of the Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Elvis Presley, Stevie Wonder, Jesus Christ Superstar, a lot of classical music, and I still have some of those Soviet vinyls from the 80-s lying around in my closet. Of course, you couldn't just buy a Gibson, but professional musicians somehow got very good imported instruments anyway.

Don't apologize, it's important to state these facts and challenge the erroneous idea that everyone in the USSR lived a drab, grey existence in fear. For all the problems literally every country or form of govt in the world have, the USSR did too, as a transition form of govt will have, but it gave us so many beautiful things that will never be forgotten no matter how much people try to bury them. That is just the way it is. I have a soft spot for Soviet film and guitar gear, ignited by the first Sovtek Muff i heard as a teenager. Fantastic minds at work over there.

I lived in the same house as Alexander Yerasov and was friends with his son. I want to recommend that you look at the Soviet analog guitar synthesizer Leader-2. When I was young, I played one. I live in Russia near the factory which is still making tubes, principally for audio amps (perhaps it was the out-sourseing factory of Sovtek and made other things in 90's), and it's quite mad that I can't buy that guys here, only from abroad or at swap meets. Thanks for video, you are great!

Totally unrelated to Soviet Pedals, but I've been binging JHS videos for a solid month, and I feel like Josh smokes up right before presenting every 5th or 6th show/episode/video. I mean, I know and Love his naturally wacky, occasionally thought provoking, and on rare occasions hilariously depressing sense of humor, but every once in a while I notice that he does what I did when I smoked: Elaborate on some thought I had far longer than anyone cared to listen to "Why I thought people were required to pee" when all I wanted to say was, "be right back"

And also there is one thing that you should know about soviet guitar pedals. There were 2 types of early soviet pedals. First ones were manufactured by factories, because government said it must be produced, and nobody cared about how they sound. And second type were designed, but never made by any manufacturers. They were published in books and "Radio" journal. They just give away schematics to common people so anybody can do this pedal by himself.

Stalin was also a General Secretary of the party under Lenin too. When Lenin was on his deathbed he realized (whoopsie) as secretary Joseph Stalin had total power over who got appointed, or basically control over who was hired or fired. Lenin used Trotsky who had about the same regard for human life as Stalin to win the October revolution. The Socialist Soviet Party Secretary answers to the party leader but when the party leader is dead, as the secretary you can appoint yourself the new leader. The dead guy cannot contest the decision.

My very first pedal since my Soviet childhood was this strange fuzz-wah pedal with a red power button (by the way, I found it in the dump when I threw out the garbage 😅) So, I couldn’t cope with it and swore that the pedal was rubbish. Now I have every piece of equipment I've ever dreamed of and the main thing I've come to realize is that what really matters is good taste. And you can get the coolest sound out of any sh t. Sound-JS pedals at 34:00 were made by Elton company in Kherson, Ukraine in late 80's and early 90's. I used to have a bass compressor Sound-JS CS-5B.

Blake played some tasteful stuff in the jams. He was one of the best guests you've had on these live sessions. Colin from CS Guitars, Dylan from Dylan Talks Tone and Ola Englund would be great KZbinrs to have on the live show. It would also be cool to have a session where you have a producer (e.g. Venus Theory) using reamp tools and pedals for music production, e.g. dub mixing or techno.

As far as I could find out, "Elektronika" was a generic name for electronics made under Soviet rule. There were many things labeled elektronika. It was not a company. Venta, in Lithuania, is most likely the company (factory, really) who made that flanger pedal. I own that one as well as its supposed successor, the Venta (Elektronika) PE-11. Venta did in fact make that one, but I can't remember where I heard that the FL-01, the brown flanger pedal, was likely made by the same factory. Looks like there is a mistake about yerasov grunge pedal. The company founded in 1988 was named "Gamma". And it changed its name to Yerasov only in 1994, after USSR ceased to exist for about 3 years. ru.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yerasov

I have an old USSR Soviet era Russian electric guitar. It is just DREADFUL! It is even worse than the worst cheap Japanese stuff from the 1960s. I had a homemade pre-electric guitar production non-OTK electric guitar in for repairs. Weirdness supreme! The pickup was made from parts of one or more Soviet payphones. (OTK = Comrade Approved by the Soviet govt.') Even Soviet chess sets had the OTK stamps on them.

1:22:32 Joshua, if you like Wovenhand you probably have heard 16 Horsepower's version of Joy Division - Day Of The Lords. That cover is amazingly haunting. David Eugene Edwards also plays better slide guitar than Rhett Shull on that. That said, my absolute favorite cover is Torre Florim's rendition of Firestarter by the Prodigy. He turns it into the soundtrack for a James Bond movie or something. Pure perfection. They can play that at my funeral.
