Heads up on the power supply is when you get a brick (isolated brick) watch out for the milliamp draw. I have two pedals on my main board that exceed the 100 milliamp draw that the bricks do. So I have to use two small wall warts in addition to the 13 (8 spot brick and a 5 spot brick) for the board. So I still have 2 more (13 pedals, 11 pedals through the bricks) potential options. That said my main board is pretty full, so I might get two micro pedals however I have pretty much covers all the types of music I play. Also buy zip ties and anchors and use those under the board to manage the wires. Basically you gather the wires and zip ties and anchor all the wires so that they are REALLY out of the way.😉👍✨

Welcome back guys! 😊 I've been trying pedals (including some of yours) and different setups on my pedalboard. At the moment i have 13 pedals (including tuner and looper switch) and they are all powered by daisy chain with a TrueTone OneSpot. I totally agree with Josh that isolated power supply is the best choice, but for my experience the quality of the pedal has an important role as well. Everytime I tried poor quality pedals I had some issues (background noise, buzzing, etc.). When I finally bought only pedals designed in USA or Europe (and maybe made somewhere else) every problem disappeared. And the daisychain is still there 😉

If you're a beginner, ignore Josh's advice about avoiding a large pedal board. People who need small, compact pedal boards are traveling and playing gigs with them. You're not. You're setting up in your house and trying stuff out. Get a big one if you want. You can replace it with a small one later when you're a rock star. Next: use command strips instead of Velcro. That goes for all of you. For real. They're the same Velcro-ey like material on both sides, and don't cost much when you need new ones or reconfigure.

The giveaway that tells you if you are looking at an isolated power supply or not is if it has an included external transformer (wall wart) or not. If it does include a wall wart, it IS NOT an isolated power supply. These are usually very inexpensive and very cheap. An isolated power supply takes an AC power cord and it transforms that AC electricity into DC electricity internally then it splits the power into different 9VDC outlets. So if you are going for Isolated Power, stay away frrom wall warts.

I'd suggest you include Cioks power units in a full on review. They have considerable mA power and flexible Voltage switches.
@pCeLobster7 ай бұрын
Power supply should be looked at as nothing more than having enough mA to power the pedals. A 1Spot supplies 1700 mA. A tube screamer draws 8mA. So a simple 1Spot daisy chain can power 212 tube screamers. Most analog effects, and even simple digital ones like a DD-3T for example, have low enough mA draw that, if that's all you have on your board, you do no need a dedicated power supply like a Zuma or a Cioks. You just don't, and the notion that you need a unit like that for a board consisting of a few overdrives, a fuzz, a chorus and a delay is a triumph of marketing over reality. And power supplies will rarely help with noise issues so don't go into it expecting that either. Where you need a serious power supply is when you have several high draw digital pedals like Strymons on the board. Those types of pedals draw hundreds of mA and you end up maxing out a 1Spot quickly when you get into that stuff. People are led to believe that high quality dedicated power supplies are an essential part of any board and it simply isn't the case. I agree with Josh on future proofing. That's never a bad thing, but again it's just a matter of making sure you have enough power long term.
@zachary9637 ай бұрын
I would agree with this. I’ve been using wall wart supplies with daisy chains because those are the only ones I understand…
@OzziePete17 ай бұрын
@@pCeLobster The issue that Josh spoke about with 1Spots is that the daisy chain introduces noise that may be prevalent in one power connection, to the others. Yes, a Cioks may be OTT for many beginner pedal boards, BUT, as Josh alluded to, it can be used again on other pedal boards when you upgrade. A clean isolated power supply is the foundation of a happy, noise free, pedal board. VoodooLabs ISO 5 is good for this level of pedalboard too.

Josh also something people overlook, I personally use one, a Computer UPS, basically its a power buffer meant for computers that acts similar to a surge protector but also has batteries that also act like capacitors, the cool thing is, they clean up and filter power, which not only would clean the pedal sound up a bit from dirty electricity, but its also protects those valuable pedals from damage from surges and such. A tuner pedal can be completely unnecessary unless you need a signal mute or to tune quietly. My only tuner pedal of my entire 28 high rarity high value collection is a strobostomp i keep on a board after a Boss RE-20 serving as a mute. I also own the poly clip. Mostly I tune by ear. Realistically if you’re starting you should begin by putting 5 minutes each session into tuning by ear. You are only stifling yourself by becoming too dependent on tuners. By the end of a year you’ll have 100x the experience tuning by ear than someone dependent on a tuner. You’re more likely to play in tune if you train your ear to be the primary resource for your tuning. This can add musicality, stability, even nuance to your playing. It also makes you a musician while listening to music. Don’t sleep on giving people the middle finger when it comes to tuner pedals. I wrote a more comprehensive run down of each of the effects but the comment was excellent and long, so much so that I had to just say what was necessary. Get a tuner only to teach you how to tune by ear. Study your GOATs to understand their rigs and learn from their experiences. Fuzz is the king of these pedals after Christ Jesus, distortion is the consistent one, overdrive comes in sparkle crunch (klon) and punch crunch (tube screamer) flavors or in-between. Vibrato and flange are the best modulations for versatility, phaser and chorus both do what each other cannot but Vibrato/Flange can do all of what the others can. Picking a pitch shifter is a lot like choosing a videogame balancing tracking, signal processing, and capability for fun. Almost all sounds between modulation, pitch shifting, delay, and reverb are based on signal duplication/multiplication. Delay pedals all try to do what tape delays do and then some. Reverb pedals do the best they can to replicate a natural sound phenomena that occurs in space time, however the Boss RV-3 is perhaps the best example of reverb pedals and how they are used today. Good music comes from the soul.

Humbly disagree about power supplies. Most pedals don't need isolation. So buy a daisy chain power supply and a external battery connector or two if you need isolation and you are still way under $100 bucks. Add to that the prevalence of battery powered power supplies that are isolated from the mains and therefore isolated. That's new technology that is getting cheaper. Strymon has an expensive version, Joyo has an inexpensive on in their Joyo 5. I bought one of those for $65 and it works great and holds a charge. Those $300 power supplies are great for gigging musicians, not appropriate for couch players. #babyneedsnewshoes, #saveyomoney, #closeenoughiscloseenough

Been using a Truetone 1Spot Pro CS7 for past three years now with great results. Great power supply.
