According to a story I heard, Shanghai Street in Kowloon was, contrary to popular belief, NOT named after the Mainland city. Before the massive land reclamation projects undertaken by the government, the street was at the waterfront where local fishermen would, after praying at the nearby temples on Temple Street, walk up to their fishing boats to go out to the sea -- hence "Up Sea" (similar to the term "Up Boat" when someone walks up from the pier to a Star Ferry these days). "Up Sea" sounds like "Shang Hai" in Cantonese, so the officials called it Shanghai Street. Is this a true story, or just an urban legend?
