Well said Jacky! Having straddled between IBDP and UK A level for quite a number of years in the region e.g. ESF, Singapore, Korea and China I have to say the upside of IBDP is that such hexagonal curriculum structure allows for subject variety, flexibility and differentiation among students, not to mention EE, ToK and CAS that enable students to develop qualities of self-motivation, resilience, versatility and collaboration that are essential to their prospective academic, vocational and personal successes. As a teacher I thoroughly enjoy the process with enormous excitement as these students do. Sorry to say but to me HKDSE is way too bland in terms of the subject options! Totally exam driven! Kids are not at all trained to make a better use of their brains throughout their learning journey. I wonder how a curriculum with such obsolete structure helps these young people succeed in an ever-changing society. Over the last half a year I was lucky enough teaching HKDSE English in a local Band 3 school. What I personally witnessed in my classes was that once these local school kids struggling from Day 1 of S1 reaching S4 realise how inaccessible HKDSE English is the majority of them just simply gave it up! I don't blame them. It's just the curriculum failing them, who are the majority in the exam cohort. The low passing rate of HKDSE English speaks for itself, doesn't it?

Thank you sooooo much for your authentic and sincere sharing, Jacky! Honestly, our child studied in IB when we were in HK before. We arranged her to study in ESF because its IB results are brilliant even in the world. According to our personal experiences, most of the bright ESF students have moved to stay or study in other countries since around 2019. Frankly, most of the well-educated and middle class parents may arrange their children to study in IB schools or even study abroad. That’s why most of the bright students may not choose to study in DSE schools. Anyways, we really like to watch your videos. Hope everything goes well with you! Cheers & Have a Lovely Day!

I'm a big fan of this channel and find this new host bringing good new things to it. Yet, I couldn't finish this episode, the reason being his claim that we should look at the results of IB for HK's best students' performance. It's far from the truth! Most HK students and parents know that it is far easier to get better exam results in IB than in DSE. HK universities' admission officers with relevant professional knowledge know that. Many sophisticated overseas education departments even have formulated their own conversion table to discount IB results to make them comparable to their local public exams. Appreciate if the host will find a chance to clarify this so as not to mislead the lay general public.

I think young people in North America are comparatively more open minded, creative and willing to take risk.
Thanks for in depth analysis. Two things. Ability to get things done is very hard to measure because we do not know what would be the next challenge. That is why, say, software companies would put the new recruits to spend time on bug fix. That may typically take a year. If you are good in producing solution you can move to other department/group. At the end of the year those remain in the bug fix room would be offered a term contract still doing the bog fix. You are one foot at the door. >>>This is not odd at all. Most jobs anywhere offer a probation period. >>>Therefore a word for the bottom of the barrow oranges. Never give up. When people think you are a low achiever try turning the table by asking how often were you right? >>>The standard of English language is not satisfactory. That is inevitable. This is the fault of the last generation and the generation before them. Lee Kuan Yew permanently hired a person to correct his language. One day, I have a bit of time, I may elaborate a bit on this. As the movie Good Will Hunting said “It is not your fault”. The script was written by two people neither of which graduated from university.
狀元 is the wrong name. These top scorers are just top pre-tertiary students. 狀元 should be those who graduate with top marks at master or PhD level. It may be harmful to the society if we emphasize too much on these top students. What HK lacks is to teach the students the right attitudes, an enquiring mind, humble, imaginative, problem solving ability and most important thing of all, a happy and caring personality. Perhaps we shall start with teaching the parents. I am the parent two top students and one above average. But I taught my kids to be humble, a difficult task for top students.

In new Hong Kong, qualities such as curiosity, humility, imagination, empathy get you nowhere. And stop boasting about your children.
