What makes modern strikers scary is just how much pressure they put on the opposition by merely existing near them. Take City as an example: Haaland needs to be marked and watched constantly by the defence. Haaland himself might not score much in such a scenario, but the fear of him bagging a hat-trick lets players like Foden and KdB get shots in. Then there are strikers like Jesus and Darwizzy who also provide work rate and assists, where other strikers might have just poached.

In my opinion Miroslav Klose is still counted as 2010's top strikers. He might be not the top in terms of number of goals scored, but damn he delivers clutch when the team needed the most. His playing style is really a benchmark that you need to have to become a top class poacher such as timing/positioning, predatory finishing, storng aerial duels, and abilities to make a quick decision in tight situation.

i’d say it’s because most teams that aren’t the top elite ones just sit deep and park the bus so it just makes it hard for them to find space and score like i’ve noticed it so much recently literally in all the old clips it’s small teams all forward and spread out against prime barca but nowadays you’ll never see that it’ll just be 8 defenders in the box and just kicking it out when getting possession back that’s why we also don’t see as many crazy long shots like back then cuz the space just isn’t there anymore

So its mostly right that strikers are not as good (similar with CBs and CAMs) as they were in the 00s and 2010s ... I mean yeah Suarez, Cavanni, Augero, Falcao, Lewi, Benz, Zlatan, Villa, Torres, Raul, RVN, Drogba, Eto, Henry, Tevez, Higuain, Klose, Podolski, Gomez, RVP.... Its outregous how many GREAT strikers were active in the late 00s to late 2010s... And there is no argument that the quality at the striker postion was deeper and of a higher caliber... However I will say this Back in the 00s and into the mid 2010s most teams played through the middle with strong CAMs or CMs who found the strikers on leasing passes and runs... Also many wingers at the time prefered to cross rather than cut into the box and score on their own.... So strikers of the 00s and 2010s were given far more chances to finish off vs the late 2010s and now 2020s where the CAM #10 role is very rare and the premier scoring positions has shifted to wingers cutting in and shooting (Vini, Rodrigyo, Sane, Coman, Gnabry, Salah, Mane, Greizmann, Mabappe, Saka, Martanell, Sterling ect...) So strikers are getting less service from the wings with so many wingers cutting in and shooting themselves ... And they are getting less quality through balls from gifted CAMs of the past like (Silva, Ineista, Mata, Santi Cazorla, Wes Snijeder, Marco Reus, Pjanic, Kaka, Lampard, Gerrard, Van Der Vart, Rakatic, and Pastore)...

The most clutch striker that I know of was Mandzukic. He scored in both Champions League semi-finals and finals(actually both finals he played) and he also scored in both World Cup semi-finals and finals. 😂 No mad goal contribution numbers or low minutes per goal contribution or golden boots and he had to play so much defense and pressing that people easily forget he was actually a CF, but you can count on your fingers number of players who scored in both CL and WC finals for example. 😅

He won a golden boot in the same league as Messi and Ronaldo, scored in the UCL final (though his record post 2015 was…) and single handed decided a lot of games, including Clasico and other tight matches, such as against Atleti, Bayern and other fantastic teams. He had every kind of finish and could embass defenders at will. Went to Atleti, WON. Went to Gremio, WON. Came to Miami, on fire already. An incredible player.

I believe there could be another factors. Lewas numbers could have dropped because he is not in his prime anymore and he is playing for Barcelona. There is one more thing. With xG measures you can see that a striker has a lower probability of scoring when there are defenders around him. Nowadays wingers and even some strikers track back to help the defense stay organized and make tackles and interceptions easier for teammates. The teams are short for pressing in tight areas without much space for the attacking team. A remember in the earlier eras there were small and mid table teams even in the PL that left a lot of space for counters even the defenders didn't track the attackers when they got behind because of a quick attacker. They haven't really tried to recover certain spaces. Nowadays even midfielders like Valverde get a red card to stop a goal. Today there are high expected assist and expected goal areas so it's easier for a defending team to know how they can defend against dangerous attacks. That's true nowadays strikers are not great but I think the arrival of Endrick and other young talents can change it. So I believe the game changed and strikers are less efficient because of their duties as you said but even the small teams are a lot more efficient in terms of defending so it makes their job even harder. However, I believe Lewa wasn't the best example due to his age and new team. To be honest nowadays there are only a few exceptional attackers, but I believe it's because the likes of R9 and Henry were too good between 1995-2010. Even guys like Rooney, Van Persie or Batistuta were phenomenal. It was crazy how many great strikers played until 2010. I believe it was a very lucky time frame in terms of attacking talent. Nowadays it's hard to find strikers like Owen or Shevchenko and if you find some gems they are underrated like Vardy or Diego Costa.

Basketball had this same conversation with centers a few years ago. During the early 2010s when spacing the floor and 3 point shooting became more prevalent, people we're saying modern centers are worse and the position is dead. However, by the 2020s the narrative changed and guys like Nikola Jokic, Joel Embbid, and eventually Victor Wembanyama showed us how great the new generation of versatile 7 foot centers can be. They just needed a few years for players to adapt to the new expectations. The position is back but it's different. Right now, we're in the transitinorary adapting phase of new gen strikers. But soon, strikers will dominate again being the best goal scorers as well as being able to counter press and pass better. In all sports, versatility and athleticism is being emphasized more than specialization wether people like it or not

Rafa Leao isn’t a striker but he is a player that reminds me of players from the last decade or two. And he was lucky at Milan being given such a free role to play as he’d like. He and Theo Hernandez are such a beastly combo when they’re both firing on all cylinders. I love watching him dribble opponents and try audacious shots from crazy angles and the like. He also always smiles when he goes to dribble an opponent. You can tell he loves it. Pioli, the coach, left at the end of this season. I hope the new coach doesn’t hamper his individual performance. Haaland is nowhere as complete as the top striker from the past but if he played in 2010's era, which defenders could have manmarked him without conceding cards and freekick ? Elite defenders now are those 190cm 90kg fridge who can run at 36km/h, jump higher than anyone, have actually feets and brains too. We are no longer in the era of defenders being mere killing machine or immobile big fridge. They still exist, but usually in lower team, not at the top of the top.

One thing that i also think contributes to the drop in quality and most of all the versatility of modern day strikers is the competition... or the lack thereof. If you take a peek at the best front half players who started their careers some time between the 80s and mid 00s you can see a trend of almost all of them being put up against some world class oppositons relatively early on in their careers. Maradona had to fear for his life at barca and even more so in italy where the competition had the likes of baresi, maldini, scirea and bergomi..., Ibrahimovic had to go up against the likes of maldini nesta stam gattuso in his early 20s, Ronaldo had talents like cole and puyol marking his every move ... these relatively hard circumstances made players adapt early on and trying for unconventional solutions to find success (longshots, shots from difficult angles, crazy dribbles and acrobatic shots on goal) while also improving their passing game as holding the ball for too long was a risky practice. This form of competition is to a degree missing due to the fact that clubs simply couldnt afford to buy the required players anymore since the prices have gone up too high. But part of the fault also has to be put on many players who refuse to leave their comfort zones for a real challenge instead building their legacy in leagues with little to no competition due to the salary while passion is put on the backseat. A prime example for that would be the french kid who spent his most important years in a league where the best opposing defenders either just got their umbilical cord cut or folks that need help to get across the crosswalk. All while having a large portion of his goals prepared up to the last touch by some actual legends of the game
