I'm not sure if anyone will ever be able to give a great explanation about why this can happen, but there are a lot of videos of hens crowing. Thankfully, when hens do crow it's usually not as often or as consistent as roosters. Jiggles was aging and probably had more testosterone in her system. A lot of people say it has to do with dominance, which I disagree. We currently have a hen that will occasionally crow and if the dominant hen was around, she'd put her in her place.

@allisonc94522 ай бұрын
Because she was a rescue who was in a confined area and had no muscle tone. Once we let her out to free range on 7 acres, her body would jiggle, thus the name Jiggles.

Why does SHE crow?
@alleycat80003 жыл бұрын
There are many theories. We do not have a rooster, so it could be that she is claiming to be the dominant hen in the flock. Another theory is that her ovaries are no longer producing estrogen and she is getting more testosterone in her system. Or maybe she was just responding to the other roosters in the neighborhood! Sadly, Jiggles has passed away, but we enjoyed her antics!
@WobblesandBean2 жыл бұрын
It's very common for hens to do this in the absence of a rooster. Also, some breeds are well known for crowing hens, such as seramas.

Such a vocal lady...what's her name?
@allisonc94522 жыл бұрын
We named her Jiggles because she had been kept in a small yard enclosure before we rescued her and she didn't have much muscle tone, so when she ran her body kinda jiggled. Unfortunately, she succumbed to cancer a couple of years ago. She was a very large hen. Towards the end she didn't walk far and couldn't make it back to the coop at night, so we would carry her back to the coop for bedtime. She was quite the character!

I hate to break it to you but the chicken ain’t a girl. I live with chickens and if you were smart to put 2 and 2 together if it crows even as little like that it’s a roster which means a male not a female.
@alleycat80002 жыл бұрын
She was a hen, she laid eggs, this means she was female not male. It's spelled rooster, not roster as you posted. I use "was" because she is deceased and died of cancer. As far as I know, roosters can't lay eggs. Hens can mimic the sound of roosters, usually when no rooster is present in the flock, which happened to be the case in this situation.
@brookhavenforlife36572 жыл бұрын
There is no proof that the rooster or hen used to lay unless there is a video until then it’s a rooster (and I miss spelled it) and why are you replying back to me when you posted this 4 years ago, you must of loved this chicken

@@brookhavenforlife3657 i have had a hen that crowed a few times as well. This was when she raised chicks and when they grew up, 2 of them became roosters and began to crow. the mother hen wanted to establish dominance over the 2 young roosters so tried to crow and sounded the same as this video. I've had chickens for over 15 years and trust me, this is rare but definitely happens sometimes.
