Thanks Mikayla for the wonderful interviews with Jill Emery and Carolyn Rue. In my view, Pretty On The Inside is such an important record, so it's fascinating to hear more about how it came to be, and also to learn more about these artists!

In the 90s as a teenage girl listening to pretty on the inside on cassette always daydreamed what happened to Jill&Caroline- never thought I’d see an interview! Jill seems so cool and down to earth I really enjoyed her speak. Much love to you!! Thanks for uploading!

carolyn (actual spelling!) told me why she left - basically there was a lot of internal conflict and jealousy so she had to go. it wasn’t a healthy situation for her looks to be compared to her band’s frontwoman and the band was going a direction she didnt really like at the time :) just like jill didnt want to play light melodic stuff at the time, she thought she was in a heavy punkish band and wanted to play that kind of thing, not what eventually became ‘live through this’ :)

whomst Rue also stated that Courtney took their passports. What the hell? Why?

her name is actually carolyn, and her last name isnt rue. shes a friend of mine, the ‘caroline’ misspelling was an accident due to them being signed to the label ‘caroline’. fun fact! :)
@refrigeratornoise30462 жыл бұрын
I read that Courtney purposely misspelled Carolyn as Caroline because it sounded /looked cooler in the Pretty On the inside liner notes
@bradpity2 жыл бұрын
@@refrigeratornoise3046 nah according to caroline it was just an accidental misprint because they were once signed to caroline records. totally coincidental. it kinda stuck from then on cuz it was printed on contact sheets and in interviews and album art that way :) she very much corrects it immediately these days haha. this was according to her in the mid 2010s btw!
@bradpity2 жыл бұрын
hey, do you need help getting in contact with carolyn (caroline rue) for an interview? shes a good friend of mine, shes a very busy woman with work and all (she works with computers and designs webpages) but im so sure she would love to do a solo interview as her last solo interview was in 1992! i can pull some strings if you need help, youre a great interviewer and i loved all the questions you asked jill so i think she would be comfortable talking to you. carolyn has a really interesting past in music too! one of her bands after hole was called mocket which she laid down drums for :)

Great interview, as a longtime Hole fan this is gold❤ it sounds like Rosemary Carroll and her influence over both Kurt and Courtney affected their bands as it related to money……keeping her clients pockets full which in turn benefited her as their lawyer. Krist and Dave had issues with Kurt over the same thing and Rosemary was behind it ……I❤ how she talks about Hope Sandoval, she was one of the very few Mexican /latina artists in the 90s at this time in music….. EDIT- I LOVE how Jill points out it something in Courtney’s childhood, as a fan I’ve never made excuses for her but she didn’t just become who she was overnight, her parents were god awful

I think early HOLE was in the vein of LA deathrock then they move into a more "no wave" noisy sound, Jill emery collaborated with Pioneer LA deathrock artists...the thing that fucks courtney up is her "celebrity obsession" but whatever Kat(babes in toyland)said before "she's interested in being famous..I'm interested in playing music" hopefully interviewer talks to Eric erlandson too

I went to all their very early shows up until Jill and Carolyn left, and they were very punk - not death rock at all, tbh.

Great interview! I'm not positive but have read that most everyone under the Hole/Courtney umbrella after 1994 or so is under a pretty stiffly worded NDA regarding what they can comment on - mostly pertaining to Kurt & Courtney. Jill exited prior to Hole's mainstream breakthrough but Nirvana was already huge & the same legal team managed both. Was Jill under the same interview constraints?
@DrownSodaMejia Жыл бұрын
You’ve heard that from the conspiracy theorists…..in fact after Kurt’s death holes management had people integrated into holes business sign such as many were leaking stories…..prior to Hole doing this TONS of other celebs had been doing this, you make it seem as if it’s uncommon and suspicious, I don’t blame them….the lies mix3d with truths were crazy after that…so no Jill nor Carolyn nor Kim Gordon or any others around signed NDA’s as it relates to Kurt and Courtney.,,,.everything isn’t a conspiracy and there’s no smoking gun story that’s being forbidden to be told by nda’s 🙄🙄🙄

Bikini Kill members sort of met and bonded at a Babes in Toyland show at someone's house. And writer Kathy Acker told Kathleen she should become a singer. BK certainly didn't happen because of C. Love. Courtney did however offer Bikini Kill to help get them on a major label, which they didn't want. Courtney hated them after that.
