I recently came across a video from a 20-something who lamented she could not pursue her passions in life because she had to work a soul-sucking job for a greedy corporation. There were all kinds of young people, not thankful for a job, but wishing they could travel, work only 3-4 days per week or help animals instead of keepitng their job. Seriously, young people today are indoctrinated to think they should get everything free and easy. It's a scary world of entitlement and laziness. It is such a refreshing reset to come back to your videos where a Godly work ethic and frugality are taught. Thank you so much!

It didn't make me mad...and my grandmother, who died at 99 and 3/4 years of age, raised 7 children during the depression. My grandfather was a useless alcoholic who didn't do much of anything except drink. She didn't have a formal job. She didn't have one nickel to run against another in her dress pocket. They did own the awful tumble down home they lived in and the 1/2 acre it sat on. No indoor plumbing, no electricity. Water came in through a hand pump in the kitchen. Insects everywhere. Very few candles and lamps that didn't get used until it was necessary. She read the bible to her kids by lamp or candle light. She made money with taking in laundry and ironing and selling home made things. She grew everything they ate and bartered for things like milk and meats. She made lye soap from wood ash and buried food scraps for compost. She had a few chickens for eggs. She saved every single seed and regrew food from them. She mended everything and bought nothing except medicine when the kids were sick, and half the paid for it by bartering with the doctor. And with all this, she never complained. She said those were just how things were. She never drove nor owned a car. She walked every place she went. She said she drove a horse and buggy once, she didn't like it, so she figured a car was no good either! She was still charitable and shared what little she had with strangers who were starving but willing to still work for thier food. During war time rationing, she thought she lived like a queen compared to the depression and didn't see the big deal about having a few shortages. As she said, " I just made do." And this is what we need to do now. Make do.

We chose to live in an old 2 bed 1 bath trailer for the last 7 years and have worked fixing it up along the way. We buy $1000 cars about every other year that my husband is handy with keeping running for a couple years. We live simply but have everything we need. We bought with 0 down. I wanted to put 10% down, but they said just keep it. We qualified for 0% down payment assistance. We had to pay $90 a month PMI, but we had the house reappraised at 2 years. It went up $120k so we had enough equity. If we had waited we wouldn’t be able to afford any property here. 5 years later we could sell and pay cash for one in the Midwest.
@bridgetbay82304 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is what we did too. But I’m assuming you did this via FHA or some similar program-you can only do it once. I think it’s a good program for some people and wouldn’t have been able to buy for many more years without it, but it’s crucial imho that you can only do it once. Hopefully most people learn from it, that is take advantage of the benefit and start working toward financial freedom rather than squander it.
@bethanyg1534 жыл бұрын
@@bridgetbay8230 yes, I believe you can only do it once. We had a conventional loan and a CA state loan for the downpayment. It really saved us in a couple ways to get conventional. We had a competing bid on the house that matched ours dollar for dollar. They had an FHA so they sold to us because conventional loans are faster and easier. It also allowed us to just pay for a reappraisal and the PMI dropped off instead of having to refinance the whole thing.

These kind of rent prices do not exist in Middle Tennessee. I had to sacrifice immensely but we never dis without necessities in order to still have a home. Rent on these parts is no less than $800-900. A mortgage is only more. I know it's hard but it can be done if you're willing to not eat out, buy alcohol, new cars, do buy discount and generic groceries, second hand clothes, etc. My parents used to Gove me bulk size shampoos, conditioner, soap, and some cash or clothes to wear to work/church (because I had an office job). On Saturdays I tried to go nowhere because into my early 30s I was still wearing high school clothes that still fit or bed clothes I'd had just as long. I wouldn't dare go out dressed that way. It wasn't socially acceptable 15-20 years ago. I'm grateful I learned to struggle. I'm grateful for the hardships and sacrifice because it has taught me patience. Even the desires of our hearts can be fulfilled by God if we are patient. We may have to wait a few years, months, or only days. There have been material things I wanted and wouldn't buy because they seemed frivolous and just as I accepted that I could live without some thongs He made it available to me, used at a thrift store, a friend or family member gives it to me. I think the key is to give your cares to Him. What sorrows you, joys, and pains you. He cares for you more than the birds of the sky. They do not worry yet He provides for them. ❤

I've been frugal my whole life. I've lived on low incomes, no income and also a really good income. I accepted my "lot" whatever it was and did the best I could. For years, it was a big mystery to me how people bought houses...but obviously, I knew it was possible. I just went on living frugally. (No bars, drinking, eating out, cigarettes, big vacations....just living) I'd always been saving all I could. At a new job, I heard a lot of 20 somethings talking about buying a house. I decided there must be a way for me to. I walked into a realtor's office and started talking to them. Before. I knew it, they found a house just perfect for me at an unimaginably low price (the seller had a deadline to be at a new job in another state and just wanted to sell.) I bought the house! It's been just wonderful! I was 58. All those years when I couldn't figure out how to afford a house, I didn't feel deprived, didn't complain about it, but I did notice others could. Maybe because I waited SO long, I was really prepared...prepared for all the expenses like new drapes, lawn mower, tools, seasonal furnace checks, patio furniture, etc. I made a list of all the needs and all the wants, prioritized them and started working on them. I got through the whole list of needs, (new back door, 6 Windows, basement water proofing, etc) and got great deals. Right as I finished that list of needs and looked toward getting my first "want" done, I became very ill...too ill to work after a short while. Well, I couldn't work anymore and had to go on disability. I'm very thankful for it, but it is low. I do the best I can with it. Your mom has been an inspiration to me...as I heard about how she counted out how many pieces of fruit to buy each week...! I'm not bitter; I don't feel poor. I'm content and thankful! I can go to extremes if I have to go save money. I think of it as a game or challenge! That keeps focused and looking forward to how well I can do. I think you're right. It IS a mindset. If people thought more about what they CAN do instead of what they can't do, I bet they'd find they can do a lot lot more. I'm very glad I bought my house when I did because I wouldn't have qualified after going on disability....or, it doesn't seem like I would have. I trust in God. If He wanted me to have a house, He'd have made it possible somehow! Enjoy your channel so much!

@Bri A Thank you, but it's my goal now to move on. I love my little house, and I have a lot of support here, but the mortgage is 50% of income. The experience of buying and owning a home had been very good for me...I learned a lot, but it's time for me to move on. I have the opportunity to go live where I'll have no mortgage or rent and I'll still have a good support system because I'll be near multiple friends I've known for over 30 years. I appreciate your prayers so much! I'd rather you pray for my safe, swift successful, inexpensive move, selling my house for the very best profit possible, smoothly, and being able to set up house easily in the new place. There's a little chapel on the grounds that needs to be completed. I have no idea who there is to help me get that done or where the funds will come from, but I'm trusting God that if He wants it done, He'll provide both the people and the funding. Perhaps you can pray for that also, please. Again, thank you for all your kind attention. The Lord reward you richly for all your help to me! 😊

Those who won't sacrifice now to afford a down payment for a house, will not sacrifice later to make the mortgage payment for that house. The bottom line is, sacrificing must begin now and must continue until the mortgage has been paid in full. The best type of home and land to purchase is one that has rental property on it. That way, the rent money can be added to the mortgage payment, so they loan can be paid off sooner. The rental part of the property can be such things as a "tiny house" a camper, a mobile home, or a room over the garage. Keep that in mind while shopping around for a home. Once the home is paid for, the renter can then be evicted, or just wait until the renter voluntarily moves out.....or dies. In the meantime, the rental income can be used to pay property taxes, home owner's insurance and/or repairs. Or it can be spent on eating and/or dining out.

My first home loan I was single female at 32 years old and I put down 6% on a brand new 86k home. Worth 300k now. Then I got married at 35 years old and we did a construction loan and put 20% down. The construction loan was 30k down and we had to sell he's 1980's Porsche 911 and my home to help come up with the down payment. We both had good jobs and good credit but we had to come up with 20%. 🤔 I think you still can get a first time home loan for 3% or 6% down? VA loans nothing down? A lot has changed in 25 years when buying a house. I would wait and take advantage of when the market dips. Homes right now are over inflated in my opinion.

I agree with your comment on the house loan but just curious your thoughts. Why do banks want to loan on depreciating assets like cars to bad credit risk borrowers but not houses. The car immediately depreciates in value by half if they have to repossess where as the house should be appreciating with inflation if they have to re-possess. I don't understand the logic or business model.

Love this episode! Yes it is a mindset and people's choices. People are choosing where their money goes instead of consciously placing it on their down payment. my 2nd sister who lives in Oregon a few years now (we are still in California SF bay area), we talked the other day on the phone and she discussed choosing where to live in Washington, Oregon, or back to California. she doesnt want to come back to CA and is leaning more toward Washington or staying in Oregon. and we discussed her downpayment which is really good. she's now at $30K (a 10 percent down payment) and plans to stay one more year in her apartment to keep adding to her down payment so that once she's ready, she and my niece will have a home. She is consciously putting 1500 a month aside . Fortunately, with internet, she is working from home as a science teacher (1 full time job and 1 part time job both from home) while watching my niece/her daughter and being super frugal.

It is def a mindset. If someone really wants to get out of debt, buy a home etc, they will find a way to do it. It seems like more and more people are actually enjoying complaining about how impossible their situation is. Very few people will even consider a part time second job, which in the 70's and 80's quite a few people had a part time second job., At least the people I knew. One of my friends worked 8 hours at mcdonalds on sat mornings. Her kids were with dad, and the $ she earned they used to pay for renovations on their old house. They purchased their home for $6,800....(it was liveable, but a total mess), they sold it after 10 years for $133,000 , then paid cash for their dream home. All from 1 extra day working fast food! I must add, my friends hubby is very handy and did all the remodeling, roofing etc by himself.

I was 26 when I bought my apartment. For 3 years before that I worked 3 jobs to save up my down payment. I lived on the bare minimum to make it work. In the 7 years after that I’ve paid off half of a $350,000 loan (AUS) and hope to have the next half paid off even faster. I’ve never had a car payment or even a standing balance on my credit card. If I can’t pay cash for it, I don’t buy it. I mostly buy from thrift stores (or as we call them Opportunity Shops), my house isn’t filled to the brim with stuff, I keep my living spaces neat, tidy and well maintained. There’s a whole lot of people out there who want to eat out, spend money on stuff they don’t need and can’t afford, make 0 sacrifice and expect to just get things because they want them. I still get told how ‘unfair’ it is, that I own my own apartment and they are ‘barely scraping by’ and rent is becoming so unaffordable but first time buyers and families are being forced out of the market by investors. When I know for a fact that this isn’t true and they earn more money than I do because they have told me. You have to make a choice, what do you want more to own your own home or to keep your current lifestyle?

Actually ... Armed with the proper knowledge, you can purchase without a down payment. I’ve never paid money down on any of the houses I’ve purchased over the years. Plus, paid off the mortgages early.

People save up for a rental deposit of first, last and security yet somehow cannot save for a house downpay. I've never understood that 'logic'. Granted, I know 20% down is ideal, but if you are frugal, conservative and do not want a mega-mansion and stay well below your means when buying a home, you CAN do an FHA 3% down loan and get into a home that you can afford. Problem is- people want way way more so they can show off to others. Makes no sense. I've owned two homes (not at the same time) because I didn't need the fanciest, best house- I just needed a solid, clean house period.

Even better than a down payment would be paying cash for the house free or at least paying enough down to avoid mortgage insurance. Rent until you have enough saved up for a large down payment and also have enough emergency savings to pay for all the inevitable repair emergencies that come with home ownership. You want to own your home, not have your home own you. We have no regrets about paying off our home as early as possible! Dave Ramsey was right! :)

I truly hate how many people feel "entitled" to have a new...or I "want"/" deserve " something. And Expecting somebody else to give in to them all the time to pay for it or grump grump being broke but they had to have xyz! My kids pay for iPhones and a payment to buy the phone itself. To me that just seems a waste of hard earned $$, especially since they have lap tops too. I have a $30 a month cell phone bill, bought the phone outright for $50( which I didn't get anything cheaper at the time, afterwards mad because I could've got it for $35 another store,ugh!). Commercials do "hard sell" advertising and we're getting brainwashed by them. What I am entitled to is a debt free life, and I work very hard to try and keep it that way! Occasionally, back slide. I don't grump to anybody, I grump at myself and pay the bill. Accountability!

8:30 very true. people just dont want to look at their lives honestly and see how much we waste on things we dont really need. i use a cellphone until it stops working and this last time i looked on ebay for deals and still got a great newer phone, a samsung galaxys10e for only about $300 when it retails for around $800 brand new. You can find deals even on the more expensive stuff by shopping around online or via local deals in ur neighborhood.

I have to say that both of you have beautiful hair and the makeup you use is very complimentary to your complexions. I'm curious, do you cut your own hair? Tawra I'd like to know what makeup you use if you would want to share.
