Elizabeth Bennet vs. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy in the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies proposal scene is my favourite thing in the film. Why does this work for me when the rest of the film is not exactly my favourite thing?
Well, it's that character-driven choreography again.

@@wierdalien1 I think it depends on everyone's taste because if the only thing you find weird about it is the zombie apocalypse, it's not the film's fault, it's nobody's fault, it's just that maybe zombie apocalypses in classical stories aren't your cup of tea. I love crossovers and that's why for me, it was brilliant because the main point of it was "what if the story was *the same but* they had a zombie apocalypse? *how would that influence the story*?" because I love thinking about what if and why. and the way they grasped the world and made the zombie apocalypse influence so many aspects of it was astonishing.

The book is significantly better. The weird prophecy subplot added to the film is bad & eats up runtime, which is a truly bizarre decision to make in a film that is _shorter_ than the film version of the _original_ book. They tossed out a lot of parts that were both funnier *and* made more sense. Darcy's weird raspy voice is basically unintelligible any time any other sound is occurring, whether foley or score or other dialogue.

I could never get into Jane Austin until I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies - it does a great job of highlighting the best of her writing and then takes it that extra step further by allowing Jane to show her anger in a way that is clear and obvious - where before the crying could he mistaken for sadness reading the original after this version makes it clear she wasn't sad - she was furious.

I love this scene simply because it uses this fighting to emphasize the emotional hits. It's only used to elevate the dialogue, emotions, and contextual importance of the scene. It's not subtle at all, but I love how it externalizes the emotions of the characters more. I will never not love how Lizzie grits out "SHE'S! SHY!" while hurling those last two books at him at mock speed, and that beat and her outrage in the wrongdoing onto her sister has her actively looking for a new weapon to come at him with, landing on the fire-poker. The button pop was a bit much, _but it was_ the perfect way to get him stunned enough to land that roundhouse like you said (it was acted so well), and that ending with him just kneeling on top of her with his arms back, chest out, looking down and her so defeated while she's holding that letter opener right at his heart... _oooh that does something for me!_ hAHA! lol I love this scene so much!

@@JaylukKhan I think the only real change that regency stays would have needed in this world is to get rid of the husk down the middle, as that would make bending at the torso quite difficult. Apart from that though, regency stays are actually closer to spanx, with little to no boning anywhere else. And for the short stays, well, they end at the waist, so they wouldn’t get in the way of much. Basically, apart from the busk, they’re just longline push up bras. They smooth, but they don’t cinch in at all. They are however, better at lifting up the ladies than even the strongest wonderbra of the 1990s. Boobs up to the chin!

@Jill Bearup I've always thought zombie bite protection didn't get enough use as a tactic in zombie media. If you wore a decent pair of jeans and a good leather jacket, 80% of your body is basically unbiteable by human teeth. A thick pair of leather gloves and something for head and neck protection would make you a walking tank in zombie world.

This is the first live action adaptation of P&P I've watched and I really like it, despite all the sexy slowmo shots that exist only to be sexy slowmo shots. I do wish the prophecy was a bit better developed, like you mentioned, but I guess a lot of my enjoyment was seeing how they'd integrate various parts of the original story to this new world. Most worked for me and glossed over the more frustrating (albeit perfectly realistic) parts of the novel like Lydia's immature running off with Wickham & Mr. Bennett's seemingly not caring about or planning for his daughters' futures. Changing that to (SPOILERS!) Lydia being kidnapped by Wickham as bait and Mr Bennett not caring about his daughter future prospects because he's focused on their immediate survival was a breath of fresh air. And some changes were just delightful- like a one-eyed master swordswoman badass Catherine de Bourgh! I stan her more than Mr Collins does.

Definitely check out The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. It's on KZbin. A modern adaptation, it focuses more on the relationships between the sisters. By using a vlog format, building tension through reenacting scenes that take place off screen, and recognizing that people don't exist in a vacuum but are to a degree a product of both their choices and their environment, it captures the essence of the novel, brings it to the near past (early 2010's), and gives the narrative room to breathe.

1- Hooray! Analysis vid of a scene I like by a person I *really* like that I am claiming for a birthday present. [opens it and a smile] Awww... I love it. Thank you. 2- Yes. Absolutely. Best scene in P&P&Z. (And not just because it's Diaval going at it with Cinderella.) 3- He's literally batting the books away like mild annoyances. 'My concentration remains unbroken. Please find that impressive.' 4- She's still totally ignoring the budding feelings she's experiencing for him, but I definitely agree that dealing with emotions is not a huge part of her character. She's not an unfeeling robot - obviously can be stung by insults and loves her family deeply; she's just usually more in control. Pretty much every version tends to display this with varying degrees of success in the botched proposal scene. 5- It's like an unexpected remix of a song you really like. 6- I took it as he moves back even when it's re-escalating, partly because he's trying to win the emotional fight, and partly because he's sort of proving/admitting he can't stay away from her. 7- She goes for the heart in more ways than one and he's.... enough of a gentleman and a good one to accept that. *Chef's kiss* Loved it! Nailed it. Wonderful as ever, my dear KZbinr. Brava.

Hey Jill, have you seen The Man from U.N.C.L.E? The movie with Alicia Vikander, Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill. It also has a brilliant (somewhat) flirty fight preceded by drunk dancing and with a hilarious conclusion! You should check it out:) I mean, aside from the fact that the whole movie is brilliant :P

I also watch Pitch Meetings, and they have consistently reinforced the decision I have already made regarding whether or not to see a movie. This is the first time a video has CHANGED my mind about whether or not to see a movie. So I got Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I don't know Pride and Prejudice, but, this movie incorporates martial skill into the plot so thoroughly, I just cant imagine Pride and Prejudice (Without Zombies!).

Fun fact: The book version of _Pride and Prejudice and Zombies_ includes a _discussion guide_ in the back (like _any_ classic of English literature likely to have a unit dedicated to it in an American high school curriculum, naturally). Among the offered discussion topics/potential forced essay theses: _Some scholars believe that the zombies were a last-minute addition to the novel, requested by the publishers in a shameless attempt to boost sales. Others argue that the hordes of the living dead are integral to Jane Austen's plot and social commentary. What do you think? Can you imagine what this novel might be like without the violent zombie mayhem?_

i really like this movie- not because it's technically 'good,' but the presentation of a society that hasn't collapsed under zombies and has adapted in a weird way is just so fun and unlike any other zombie movie I've seen. like every other zombie movie everyone is covered in dirt and ready to risk it all for one single can of beans and everyone in pride and prejudice and zombies looks great and is ready to to risk it all to go buy ribbons.

P&P (Austen's, not the Zombie thing) is one of my all-time favorite books, and I enjoy the BBC adaptation with Colin Firth BECAUSE of how they handle the character of Darcy. While I enjoyed your analysis of the "flirty fight", what I enjoyed even more was your analysis of Darcy and Lizzy. Spot on!
@speedythree

I think you nailed this fight. The movie is a bit of a guilty pleasure; I'll watch it maybe twice a year (but only when I won't be caught!) But I think Darcy is correct to be careful of the letter-opener; it has a rather wicked point and, unlike most letter-openers that I have see, I think it has a proper edge to it (which would be apropos to a zombie-infested Regency England, where you never know when you might need a weapon.)

Yep, this is the best scene in the entire film. The Wickham subplot didn't work for me at all, because I actually ended up sympathising with the zombies that appeared to be doing their best (Wickham himself notwithstanding, ugh). They paid a LOT of attention to the dialogue and setting in this scene, and the fight, as you say, just reinforced what was going on emotionally. It's great. It worked much better than the book for me (the P & P & Zombies book) because at least the dialogue wasn't horribly anachronistic the way the book's was. I didn't finish it, in the end (and I'm not hugely fussy about these things). So I don't know how much the film followed the book, but I do think the zombies part could have been done better. Just a straight reveal of Wickham himself being a zombie would have been perfectly sufficient, I feel. One more thing, I think when Darcy pins Lizzie, it's not just about his eyes wandering to her cleavage. I think the main problem for him has suddenly arisen ...further south, and that's why he and Lizzie are both so horrified.

Innocent question: What was Lizzie's point, then? Because I have no blue's clue what idea she's trying to convince Darci(?) of by slicing his buttons. Genuine question.
@wiseforcommonsense
@wiseforcommonsense 3 жыл бұрын
She was basically calling him a cad who had robbed Whickham of what he deserved and a bright future (thus why he was in the army). It hurt Darcy because she would think him so cruel, and the button slicing was to show that she could hurt him if she wanted too.

To be fair, the book lurches back and forth between zombies and drama. From my point of view, any time the book started to get boring, they introduce zombies to keep it interesting. It's not always smooth, but that's just kinda how it is.

Thanks for the analysis of this particular fight scene out of PPZ. I enjoyed the whole movie but this particular fight scene really encapsulated the conflict between Elizabeth and Darcy. It really is a "flirty fight" of the kind seen in other movies and your analysis of the fight is dead on accurate.

At first I saw the movie. And I thought it is wonderful. Then I found a book. I read it and I realized, that movie is not so good as I thought. Because movie tries to be action and had ... I don't know, who to say it... but the ending was weird. On the other hand... book just take jane austin's story and mix it with zombie and horror. I think the autor tried to make clasical story likeble for the readrs, which prefer fantasy, scifi over clasic literature and have to read Pride and Prejudice, because... you know... a school. But this sceen was perfet for me in the movie and also in the book.
