That reminds me of a really bad Steven Seagal movie I saw. (OK, that's not a very helpful description). Every act began with a group of Triads discussing what they were going to do to Seagal's character. Then we saw one of them attempt to do what we had been told they were going to do (and fail). Then afterwards a pair of cops would turn up, examine the aftermath of the crime scene, and explain what had happened (which we had just seen happening). This was repeated throughout the film until all the Triads were dead.

WHY DID THEY DO THAT?! I'm not even a filmmaker and even I can tell that you have to let the consequence of each move hang for a bit to let the viewer understand it! You show a more general view to help understand the context, close up into the motion of the attack to make sure people know what is being done, and then show the consequence -- the wound/parry/block/deflect, or the receiver's face whichever works best. They did like, the opposite!

All those cuts are to hide the fact that neither of them know how to fight even remotely convincingly and the director wants to hide it while still keeping the fight in. The most blatant example would be the climatic fight in The Medallion between Julian Sands versus Jackie Chan, when the film suddenly goes all super cut-ty, to hide the fact that Sands probably couldn't learn the fight choreography well enough in time to meet the fight choreographer's expectations (who was Sammo Hung, so those were probably very high indeed!).

Regarding "Charming" extraneously hitting the spear at the end, there are continuity errors that hide it, but you can see in the wide CGI shot (8:52) that he's actually broken the spear in half. I'm guessing the script made a big point of Charming breaking his opponent's weapon, but they didn't actually have a practical broken spear prop on set, so they just had to fake it (badly)

I recently watched seasons 1 through 4, and I have a different reaction. They brought the brother back through flashbacks, which the show used heavily, so that's fine. I count 174 cuts in this video (only counting everything within each section of each 'bad fight scene' clip as 1 cut). So, average one every 4.4 seconds. However, as a good chunk of them are you trimming what you're saying, it feels a lot less - only 99. Yes, you do cut from yourself to yourself quite a bit. But it feels natural, more dynamic than leaving in longer pauses - so good editing. 🙂 I think those numbers are right, but I'm not so much of a masochist as to go back and check again!
@sydneygorelick7484

But also, we're mostly not trying to track any action Jill's doing. She's sitting still, staying in center frame, just talking. We don't have to follow anything but the audio. All the shots of examples are longer chunks that show a whole movement phrase at least. And, even at 4.4 seconds per cut, that's over 7 times longer on average than this very bad fight scene.

Godard told us that "the cinema is truth twenty four times a second, and every cut is a lie." Fred Astaire arrived at the same conclusion thirty-five years earlier. He believed every dance number should be filmed, as nearly as possible, in one unbroken take, always showing the full figures of the dancers from head to toes. No cuts, or every few...and no close-ups of the dancers' faces, for that would deny us the movement of their bodies. --Roger Ebert

I really love this idea to reproduce combats and check those IRL. It makes me think of the stuntman Anton Fomenko who does frequent videos on stunts in movies and "are those possible or not". I feel that if you were to create a series of videos with that, it would have a lot of success, especially since you would be the only one doing it and you would win a lot of viewers from that. I understand though that it may be difficult because you often need the place and the people to help you. Anyway, I really love your videos. It gives an other point of view to my HEMA point of view, often needing "realism" and through your work (but not only) I understand that "realism" is sometimes in the way of what the scene was ment to be, and balancing those is difficult. Didn't even mention that horrendously weird armour. First I thought it was supposed to be Roman Lorica Segmentata because of the over-sized shoulder guards, which was already horrendous because it's paired with a medieval-inspired sword and shield. But then I looked closer and it was even worse- the breastplate actually seems like it was supposed to be some kind of riveted Brigandine-thing made out of little square plates, but it's obviously been made in one moulded piece out of rubber or embossed leather or something. And the backplate is made with yet another different construction method again. It's like an Inception of bad costume armour.

If you look on the ground after he stabs the "brute", the spear is in two sections. I can only assume he weakens it with the strike to the spear and then breaks it by kicking it. Now that doesn't explain how the "brute" who just flipped him head over teakettle doesn't hold on to the longer section still in his hand but makes a tiny bit more sense of the hit the spear section.

The editing is like the opposite of Jackie Chan fight scene editing. He'll cut right before a punch or kick lands, then in the new angle, back up time a little so you get more of the motion before impact. The effect is that the impact appears to have MORE weight to it.
@bartz0rt928
@bartz0rt928 Жыл бұрын
I like that thanks to that Every Frame A Painting video on Jackie Chan, everyone can now just look up how it _should_ be done: 1: Use a static camera so the audience can see all the cool moves and can follow the narrative of the fight; 2: For the same reason, make sure the fighters are visually distinct; 3: To give a hit more weight, cut _in_ at the impact, but start the zoomed in view three frames earlier. Your mind turns it into one, bigger, hit; 4: If you want to do a complicated move, make sure you budget for doing it over and over again until you get a solid take; 5: Have the hero start by getting whooped, then fight his way back up to the top. So when you see stuff like this, you know it must be because of incompetence. Either the choreographer's, the director's, the performers' or the editor's. Possibly all of them. What this fight is telling me is that both fighters are garbage and that the biggest fairy tale is that they've managed to survive to the point where they would face each other. (Finally, cool trick from Game of Thrones: if your hero dies suddenly and gruesomely at the hands of a fearsome enemy they mistakenly assumed defeated, cut _away_ at the moment of the gruesome and sudden death to focus on the horrified reaction of an emotionally involved onlooker.)

As someone who never saw the series, this scene puts me in mind of a teacher/student fight. Of course the spear guy (teacher) gives the student (sword guy) time to recover, He's trying to make him improve. Also makes sword guy hitting the spear when he's getting up make sense, he's flailing dumbly because he's just a student that's learning. The sword guy seems like a very bad sword fighter, who needs all the help and tutelage he can get though.

(Rather heavy sigh) Jill, I usually try to not gush at ladies on the Internet but you are all like nerdy, and swordy, and badass and it is earnestly hard for me to not swoon. I showed my son your murder dress video. Much love and ample respect, fair maiden.

Coincidentally, "Enormous Bicep" happens to be my nickname for you, Jill. And you mentioned Skall, who is from your OTHER ancestral homeland! = ) ALWAYS good to see Duncan again. Even when he thinks he is too old to be a prince. (Has he heard of Charles?) "Attacked by a tag team of squirrels and herring gulls". Ha! That writer's wit! And instinctively, you KNOW that fight would be MORE entertaining than this one. Neighborhood kids with a viewing diet of ONLY Daffy Duck cartoons could choreograph a better fight. And clearly EVERYBODY is to BLAME! Even the catering person could have intervened and saved us by pointing out the obvious. But instead, they chose to let the horror unfold
@Herr_Damit
@Herr_Damit Жыл бұрын
Don't blame the catering, they might have been cringing in pain, but it's not their responsibility. Would you risk your job for this? I know it's a hyperbole, but as I see it, the only twos parties to blame are the fight choreographer and the cutters.

@@Herr_Damit Ultimately the buck stops somewhere higher up. The fight choreographer may have been working with what they've got, actors who don't really know how to fight, with limited time to train and get used to it. The editors may have been told "This fight sequence has to last X number of seconds", which might have been very different from what the choreographer was told. Or some exec came in and told everyone to re edit things.

@@Herr_Damit Having been on movie sets..."below the line" people, aka crew, extras, background...don't get fired for an opinion. @@ptonpc I was fight choreographer in a stage production of PIRATES OF PENZANCE. Besides the beginning fight, when Adrenalin kicks in, choreography goes out the window replaced by rapid flailing and me trying to save my eyes, because the director did not give them time to rehearse properly, he also told me, last minute, that I had 8 bars worth of time for the big climatic/comedic fight. = ) So yeah. Higher ups.

Maybe the physics of the spers-shield throw isn't that impossible, the prince clearly jumps up at the start of it 😅 Great reconstruction of the fight, at least now I see how it really went, all the cuts made it very hard to follow.

When the prince falls, it looks like the spearman is recovering from shoving him in the back with the middle of the shaft. Did they forget to insert a cut initiating a shove?

In partial defence of... one move in the fight: James has regained his balance from the brute's overhead slash and goes into Dramatic Spin Attack (I know, it's not particularly practical, but it is dramatic, so fair enough). Spin attack is parried so he spins again, but doesn't appear to attack until way at the end (although the brute is now behind him when James is flailing wildly in front of him before falling). Why the second spin then? You don't mention it in your commentary, but the footage with you and Duncan has a good example of why- the brute has made a riposte at shoulder/throat height on James, and James responds by trying to dodge and still has the momentum from his spin. The editing and continuity is pretty choppy (in at least one of the shots the wings of the spearhead have clearly bound the rim of James' shield and are pulling James to his left, in others the fore end of the spear haft is pushing at James' right shoulder), but that's to cover that those two sections of this pass were done in separate takes, presumably because the actor couldn't switch grip on his spear fast enough (also of note- the direction the spear is pointing and the orientation of the leading hand both flip between shots). ...aham. The point is, the second spin there is not a bodged second attack by Prince James, it's a bodged reaction to the brute's counterattack.

I would love to be able to fling someone over my head like Spear Guy did. Handsome Chap was lower down than him, and his weight multiplied by the length of the spear? No wonder he wasn't just aiming at Handsome Chaps unarmoured head, with muscle like that he could go straight through plate!

Love the sparkling in your eyes when you're about to sass the moves ! Also, please do a fight analyse from "Lockwood & co" ? If you want to ? (I kind of liked them, and I saw in the credits that the choreographer's (stage ?) name was Philip d'Orléans. Amusing to imagine the guy staging combat as a relative of the former french royal family...)

On 2:32, might they have used stunt performers, then composited the actors' faces afterward? They did this back in the 90's for Jurassic Park, but I don't know if they'd bother for, as you put it, a little fight in a TV show.

Hi Jill. I don't know why, but this got me thinking of Hit Girl from the movie Bad Ass. I guess, also a ridiculous premise, but the scene makes little sense, so I'm not going to examine my own internal process too closely. In looking at Bad Ass, I pondered, "I wonder what Jill would think about Hit Girl's armor and fight scenes. I mean, full body coverage, decent protection considering she is going for maximum mobility and is a 15 year old girl so weight is an issue, and finally - NO HEELS. Not high ones, or low ones. Combat boots. The only major issue I saw was the lack of head protection (except when she was riding her motorbike.)" I hope I get to hear your thoughts on Hit Girl.

I was just rewatching the video and noticed that the second move where the spear dude hits Prince James' shield, the prince is at least ten feet away from the edge and then the next shot has him wind milling his arms as he's on the edge. Apparently the hit was strong enough to teleport him ten feet backwards because there was no way he spun all that way in such little time. It makes you wonder if there was supposed to be more that happened there, or if they figured no ones ever going to notice because it happens too fast. Of course then after that little bit near the edge they have managed to teleport back to ten feet away from the edge. It isn't obvious when watching the scene at full speed, but it does make it look a little weird once you notice it.

You uploaded just after I had a rant on another channel, so I am in the mood to say this: I really love your content, I have a hard time watching a lot of medieval-themed channels nowadays, because of Shadiversity, but your content always delights me. Hits the same points as his content(incorporating practicallity into fantasy-stories), but without the mysogynistic baggage. How are comments 2 days old, reupload?
