No lie, I’ve often wondered how you dealt with that video and I wondered if it impacted your relationship with booktube 😢 I love every time you post so I’ll always be here! But you’re so right that the negative comments really stick with you. I love Patricia Highsmith! She’s always at least interesting, even when she’s not at her best.

I agree with and echo the previous comment here. Thank YOU and do not underestimate the way YOU touch others. I would have a hard time reading hurtful and hateful comments too. I am grateful for the time and talent like yours and others I have found on KZbin in the worlds of book lovers and knitters. I don’t really knit, but they are a kind and thoughtful group! I also loved The Librarianist (strange childhood episode included). I have a sample of Demon Copperhead on my Kindle and your review has put it at the top of my next-to-read list. Cheers and kudos from this retired librarian!

I don't knit either but I've been thinking about trying to teach myself. It's good to know there will be a thoughtful community if I try to pick it up. Thanks for your kind comment🤍

We seem to be living in a very intolerant society. A democracy is supposed to be about free speech. Listening to differing points of view, keeping an open mind, and agreeing to disagree are values that seem to have been lost. You have a right to your opinion without being attacked for it.

I enjoy your videos so much Jill. First I watched them for the wonderful and thoughtful comments you share. I still do of corse, but you have the most delightful and pleasing personality on youTube. So many of your recommendations I have enjoyed and I look forward to. Opinions are just that. Opinions aren't facts. You're the best!!

Negative comments like that can make somebody really question themselves and I can totally see how that experience could trigger thinking about one's online presence. I think about this sometimes too and don't necessarily have a great answer, but overall the booktube community seems incredibly positive, esp. compared to other corners of the internet. I definitely need to get to Demon Copperhead but it takes me a while to pick up traumafic b/c I have to be in the right mood!
@TheBookBully Жыл бұрын
Definitely there is lots of trauma in Demon Copperhead but it's balanced so well with humour and joy and love that it doesn't feel like you are reading trauma porn (like A Little Life, or something).

Jill, I love you and your videos! One of the things I love about your content is that you aren’t afraid to be critical and that you don’t just gush over every single book. Because of that, I trust your opinions more. I really respect your honesty. I hope the Yellowface video doesn’t scare you away from being critical of books that deserve it.

Jill, I just discovered you through a favorite booktuber of mine, abookolive. I want you to know that there are very few critical people out there. What is sad, is that they seem to be the most vocal. Keep being you, your genuine self. I can't wait to hear more of your bookish opinions. I will have to try to finish Demon Copperhead. Maybe I was in the wrong head space when I was reading it because I just couldn't get through it. But I love well crafted beautifully written books. SO it'll go back on my list.

Ive read more of your recomendations than anyone else and you are always spot on for me. I know people have strong opinions out here in the ether. However, like you said ,we have a great community here and a few people with too much time on their hands can't spoil that. We love you JILL!!!

Okay, I hope this makes you laugh but I do not remember your Yellowface video but, many people I watch did not like it and seemed uncomfortable talking about it. I also hope this comment shows there are as many if us who are not bothered or don't remember the video. 😅

I love Highsmith and Deep Water has been on my TBR for awhile. loved Strangers on a Train and Sweet Sickness were both excellent and Ripley of course. I want applause as I recently finished David Copperfield. I read it after reading Demon and wanting to see how Kingslover paralleled the two. I don't recommend it. I liked Demon better before I saw how closely it had taken from Dickens. I love Kingsolver--have read many/most of her books and would never consider skipping one of her novels but I would recommend not reading Dickens to understand Demon better. Sometimes one can look to long and deep. Love your videos. I took my first trip to Montreal and Quebec city on Thanksgiving week and believe it or not I thought of you and wanted to tell you how much I loved all I saw.

Ok I'm so glad to know I don't have to read David Copperfield hahaha!! I am not a Dickens fan so you have absolved me of this requirement. I hope you had a good time in Quebec! Montreal is a cool city, but I've never been to Quebec city myself! I need to make an effort to get there. Thanks for your thoughtfulness 🧡

Online presence is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. I constantly flip between: sharing more, sharing less, review more and then not feeling like I have anything to contribute, while at the same time really don't want to invite the unfriendly commenters. But also want to participate in the community more. I don't know what will happen in 2024, it all so often depends on life around reading. Looking forward to your thoughts on books in 2024

I can't remember if you like personal essays but Yiyun Li's essay collection, Dear Friend, From My Life I Write to You In Your Life covers her (harrowing) experience growing up in China, her life in letters to other writers, and her mental health. Your videos are always a welcome sight and it's wonderful that you're doing well.

I posted a video, 'When Authors Aren't Good People', in December 2021. I originally made the video because people were finding my review of Lucky and asking me to comment on what had come to light about Alice Sebold. I decided to do it and expanded a bit in the video to talk about JK Rowling as well. It had the usual level of engagement for a couple weeks and then suddenly it started getting lots of views and comments from people outside the Booktube sphere. It ended up being my lowest morale moment making videos. I'm never doing anything like that again because it's just not worth the time and stress dealing with the comments. I'll post what I want when I want to. All that to say, you do you, girl. -Becks

New subscriber to your channel! I'm sorry you had to deal with an unpleasant reaction to one of your videos. There are lots of toxic people on most of the Social Media platforms, they thinly disguise their narcissism through dismissive comments. Lean in to all of the positive comments you receive!

Okay so I didn't expect to add the three books I hadn't read from this video to my tbr but I have and I also kinda want to reread Demon Copperhead now? So I feel like that says something about how good you are at talking about books. Or maybe just that I want to love all the same books as you. Or maybe both 🤗

Love kitty 🐾🐾. It’s never about the quantity of books you read. If I can add one book to my TBR then it’s all good 👍 also being on social media exposes a person to the good, the bad and the ugly. I am a new subscriber and didn’t watch the Yellowface video, however I did love that book. I hope you keep on making videos because I really enjoy your reviews.
