I always use a surgeons knot. Usually when I get to knotting I have very little thread left so there's hardly an issue with getting the thread to sit nicely and it's fairly easy to just slip the needle an extra time through the loop, so there's no harm in extra securing the knot. I never ran into a problem with using this knot, and I can't imagine what merit could the half hitched knot have. Is there a particular reason to not use the surgeons knot?
