Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar are calling the documentary "sad," "derogatory" and "sensationalized," with "ill intentions hurting people we love." In "Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets," Jill Duggar claims her parents cheated the kids out of financial compensation for their work on the popular TV series.

I grew up like that in a Assembly of God church. We lived on a small island in Puget Sound and we were raised to fear God in a more literal sense. The contract for who got paid for participating in the series likely started when all of the kids were minors and one would hope as each child reached 18 the parents would have had their contract amended to reflect that and allowed the child to make his or her own contract. However, even if the parents didn't do that I would think TLC would have a responsibility to sign a new contract with each child as that child reached his or her majority age.

I'm upset with Inside Edition for focusing on Jill saying that she did not receive payment for the show. Yes, that was spoken about in this documentary that takes place over several episodes but that's not the point of this documentary that's not the main thing that Jill spoke about or Jinger or anyone else who has been interviewed. Jill spoke about not being protected from molestation, being manipulated by this cult IBLP, being asked to cover up the molestation by her father and pretend that she wasn't a victim. Jill and her siblings were not given a proper education but instead taught that they must submit until they believed that their voices and bodies were not their own. It was conveyed to them that the molestation was their fault. They were beaten with rods for disobeying. Taught the lie that the love of God, especially when it comes to being a child or woman is submit to a man or go to hell... Need I go on! This hell these children lived in, the pain and trauma they will live with forever... is not about lack of money.
