Just got the new 68 Custom Princeton Reverb in today from Sweetwater. Sounds different as would be expected at home. Yes I did try one out at True Tone Music in Santa Monica, CA recently with a Amer Jazzmaster Special and was immediately won over by the tone. In my home it sounds a lot deeper but then again, that's my home and not the music store. If I had to immediately choose a small amp, I go with my HR Blues Junior, though it is a 15 watt vs. this 12 watt. All in all though for a small amp, a lot of muscle, great knob response to any setting you ask for. The Celestion 30 is an awesome speaker. Really like the "blue" color light vs. traditional red from an aesthetic aspect. Being a Fender amp person (one acception being a Vox ac15cc1 with Celestion GH12 Heritage 30 speaker switch) and new preamp tube) the Deluxe Reverb is top dog then my Vibrolux. Don't play out much these days, so I go for the smaller watts and mic if needed. My advice, try the 68 Custom first before you order and use the guitars you'd normally use. Environment is the challenge

for Jim (and anyone else): Adding two 1M resistors in parallel to the existing 1M resistor in the trem circuit dramatically improves the Princeton's wobble. See any of Uncle Doug's Princeton restoration videos on youtube. Easy, cheap and magnificent. Easily removed if you don't like it too. Cheers!

I had a Princeton Blackface Re-Issue and the tremelo was weak. I ended up selling it and eventually got the 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb (good tremelo). Sometimes you're lucky, and other times you're not. You can never count your chickens before they hatch.
@melonfarmersounds
@melonfarmersounds 2 жыл бұрын
You wrote this six years ago I realize, but in case somebody reads this: if the tremolo on a 65 PRRI is too weak, the amp is probably biased too hot. When biasing you should aim for 20-21 mV with that amp, tremolo should be fine then. If the bias is too low, the tremolo is too pronounced.

You'd think for almost a grand, Fender would have better constructed cabinets & handwired circuitry. I really wish they'd get rid of stuff that's below usable quality & invest in things that are classics with better quality and attention to detail.

These have a MSRP of $1200 which means dealers are paying $600 for them. So Fender needs to be able to make these for about $300 to make any money. There is no way they could do hand wired Princetons for $300 manufacturing cost.

+Daniel Birtchfeld It's not meant to be based on a '65 Princeton Reverb, that amp is a Blackface. This is based on one of the early Silverface Princetons, although how much it sounds like an old Silverface I can't tell you as I've never played one, and this particular one makes some modifications to it. Some people reckon this sounds quite simialr to the Brownface Princeton as well, but again, I haven't played one of those either.
