I’ve had a 68 Custom Deluxe for about 4 years and absolutely love it. There’s a sweetness about it that no other amp I’ve ever used has. One added feature not mentioned is that it has no bright cap at all. The 65 does. That avoids low volume settings sounding thin ie the infamous Fender “ice-pick” sound. Both channels are great. The custom channel sounds a bit dark when you first try it but the absence of a bright cap means you can really use the treble control - even max it out and it still sounds usable, like all Fenders it has loads of bass and it’s best to run the bass low on either channel especially if recording. One thing to note though is the reduced neg feedback results in background hiss. After a while you don’t notice it. Just don’t think it’s faulty when you hear it - it’s a result of the modification to the circuit.

it's called a design flaw and professionals don't accept it. the amp hisses like a motherfucker and it's unusable for recording. surprisingly an attenuator solves the problem. psionic audio has a few videos about this.

After going down the boutique rabbit hole and being generally dissatisfied I bought a simple 68 Deluxe Reverb. What stands out for me is that it both sounds and feels great. I can lose hours on that amp. Get yourself an ABY pedal and you're all set. Takes overdrives really well too I should add.

I have the '68 Custom Deluxe Reverb shown here and watching this demo has convinced me of one thing. That is, I need to get on that custom channel more. I must also say that I love the way this amp is improved with the speaker upgrade, making the break up sound so sweet. I passed up the opportunity to get The Princeton which had always been my dream amp and I was almost regretting that move, but '68 Custom DRRI's versatility and power has cured me of that.

Wow. I love the Bassman stack. I had a Sovtek MIG once that was modeled after the Bassman, and it sounded amazing through some vintage 30s with a ProCo Rat in front of it. However, it was 50 watts! I would love to have something at 12 watts with a 10" speaker to get that old school mid punch in the face sound like early Joe Walsh. I think you've also convinced me to hold out and keep saving for a American Original 60s Tele--one that I'll keep for life. Thank you so much for using a rosewood board Tele in this video--absolutely my favorite style of guitar, and you did it justice with your playing!

Very true. I have the Custom DRRI and I find the volume levels are very usable for any situation. For practice at home I can go to 4, still get a tease of the breakup, which is very satisfying and when I take it out I rarely need to go above 8 (but I do). I feel it's because this amp really fills the room with sound as opposed to just blasting out ear numbing decibels. I also have an inexpensive Bugera attenuator, so I can go further into the break up at home or in a small venue.

Having a separate Bassman tone stack is amazing. I really want the '68 Vibrolux they had. I would add alnico Jensen's and possibly swap in a 5751 in the PI position. Having the low input is good for clean headroom but having the option of getting more gain at lower volume is nice. It's not the terrible farty distortion either like most of the '65 Blackface reissues make.

If you have Boogie money and want one of these. You should really check out the George Alessandro handwired versions. I bought one a Handwired Deluxe Reverb a few years ago and it is by far the holy grail of any amp I’ve ever had. George takes these, pulls all the pcb out, replaces a period correct turret board p2p wiring and keeps the good components like the schumaker transformers and porcelain tube sockets. You’ll have to bury me with this amp.

@@HiHello-ku1fl I would agree totally! I always tend to gravitate to 10" speakers with Fenders... bassman, super reverb, Princeton etc. I've played/owned all 3 of these and can tell you imo the Princeton is the most inspiring and fun to play. If you want strictly amp breakup tones the deluxe sounds best, and if you're looking for mainly cleans/pedal platform the vibrolux is best. I found the Princeton to be way too dark sounding. If you look at Jack’s amp settings in the video, he has the treble on 7 and the bass on 3. Complete opposite how I run my vintage blackface Princeton. Fender modded the 68 circuit to purposely make it more bassy. Hence the “Custom 68 Princeton”. I found a simple mod to take out the bass. On the circuit board where the tone controls are, locate resister R34, an 18k resister. It is clearly marked on the board. Take a short length of wire and solder it across R34, rendering it “out of the circuit”. I am much happier with the tone now. And the mod is easily reversed.
