the backstory behind the mask is so interesting, i remember reading about it way back when...apparently there is more than one of these masks...can't remember how many though...i think 5 or 7 (don't quote me on that, i could be wrong). They are slightly different in appearence but can give the wearer scary power. They originate from the West Indies if i remember right...some kind of weird voodoo power. they enhance the qualities of the wearer...so if your a good person you become amazing...ir you are evil you become even worse.
