I typically agree with Cornette about a lot of things with wrestling. However, he's completely off about NJPW. For all of his gripes, he's overlooked the fact NJPW is getting back to treating wrestling as a sport, not "sports entertainment". It's not always perfect, but they've been on fire with their in ring product and presentation. Cornette obviously hasn't paid attention to any of the current shows or guys on the roster.

Mr. Wombatt I think cornette has admitted that he doesn't watch modern wrestling, and in most of his videos, like this one, he explains why. It sounds like the only matches he watches are ones that people tell him about, but it doesn't appear that he on his own picks a wrestling show to watch.

Jim doesnt properly remember the past of wrestling. There has always been goofy stoopid shit in wrestling, and he has even been a part of it. Remember everytime Cornette would end up with cakes and pies in his face? In goofy segments that are obviously set up for him to get it in his face. Wrestling always had dumb segments that exposed the business. ALWAYS. Everyone, outside of idiots, has always known wrestling is fake. Smart people have always enjoyed its presentation when done properly. Like it or not, adults who enjoy wrestling usually know its a work, but get caught up in the angles. Its just like soap operas. They're fake and ridiculous, but they have their dedicated fans who watch loyally.

Kenny Omega is a great athletic wrestler that doesn't know how to work a proper match and just does moves for the sake of moves just because, "i can do it." Despite the fact a lot of wrestlers can do what he does. Their are a lot of athletic gymnastic type wrestlers out there that can do the things he does. The difference between the ones that are great pro wrestlers to Kenny Omega is that the great pro athletic wrestlers know how to work a match. To make it believable, and that oh so important thing that so many indie promotions lack including todays generation for most of the japan wrestlers is hardly any ring psychology being used. Because of that, it is simply not my style of wrestling that i enjoy and love watching in regards to matches and wrestlers. To me, Kenny Omega does not stand out because their is really nothing that makes him stand out because he just does moves that so many wrestlers can actually do. And he is incapable in wanting to make a match have ring psychology where you can take it seriously. The best example i can give is when Kenny or his opponent nails a high impact maneuver. Yea, its a big time high impact maneuver. A maneuver that should get a rise from the crowd. But why should i care about this move and see it as an important moment in the match when, jesus christ, 98% of the time, right after that high impact maneuver, the guy that took the blow from that move is the person to nail the next offensive maneuver! Which of course throws away that move of being of any importance to the match because it meant nothing because it really didn't mean a thing because the guy he nailed the move on is the guy that is hitting the next offensive maneuver. It...it just irks me to no end when i see that constantly happening with no rhyme or reason. Let alone when that maneuver can easily be seen as a finisher and yet the match is not going to end for another 15 to 20 minutes while the pace of the action is still the same as if the two wresters are fresh as hell.

simon collingwood: That's the thing: A guy with as much potential as Omega shouldn't have wrestled a blowup doll. That's for the Colt Cabanas, the Doinks, and the Joey Ryans of the biz. Omega's too good for that shit. How could any promoter worth a damn push this guy now in front of 14,000 screaming fans in a sold out arena and his opponent plays this over a titantron? Even fans who know it's a work and don't take wrestling seriously will be like "THIS.....is the guy?" I do think Jim takes it a little too far sometimes in his barbs but he has a point: Omega killed just about any legitimacy he had in one match. I don't know if it was his idea or not. If it was- Omega's dumber than a box of rocks. If he didn't- he should've told whoever suggested it to piss off.

As the duo discuss the routines they were mistakenly hired to do in Amsterdam. One of the discarded routines saw the two. Playing heel foreigners taking on the invisible man. Who they eventually tied up in a turnbuckle. Where Chong grabs"something" below the belt and stretches it to the opposite turnbuckle. Then heads to the next one. Everything goes well till he forgets about it and clotheslines himself. "It" now flies around the ring uncontrollably knocking everyone out in the process. The point of this long comment. It was REJECTED BY CHEECH AND CHONGS. The guys who gave us "Dave's not here". Rejected the angle.

I echo Jim's concerns with the state of modern wrestling and his related analogy of top broadway actors doing a dramatic reading with the clown spoiling the whole thing. In my case, I started watching wrestling in the late 1970s. I grew up watching the tail end of the San Francisco territory, then early 1980s AWA, early 1980s WWF (before Hulk Hogan arrived there), and later Jim Crockett Promotions. At that time, wrestling was presented in weekly television production in the image of sports competition. When WWF went in a different direction in their presentation in the mid 1980s, Jim Crockett Promotions didn't. Then in 1989, after Turner already bought JCP the prior year, that product gradually harmed my interest in wrestling overall. I can still remember the Chi Town Rumble 89 PPV. As great as the Flair / Steamboat title match was, Jim's analogy of the broadway actors with the clown comes to mind for me. Rick Steiner and Mike Rotunda were putting on a good match, and Jim Ross was selling them in the play-by-play as two former collegiate athletes (i.e. the broadway analogy). Then Kevin Sullivan comes out to ringside and makes a comment about Steiner's dog, distracting Rick (i.e. the clown moment). Then in the finish, Steiner has a sleeper hold on Rotunda, but he maintains the hold while laying on his back, and Steiner's shoulders are down for a 3 count. So a former top Michigan wrestler, who instinctively would stay off his back, ends up pinning himself. A non-logical finish, and another clown moment that spoiled the broadway show overall. That ruined the entire PPV for me. Of course during that year and over the next couple of years under Jim Herd, to carry on the analogy of the ongoing clown moments, it continued on and on (the Ding Dongs, Norman the Lunatic, the Black Scorpion, RoboCop, stupid finishes, etc.). All of that would hurt my overall interest in wrestling. In early 1992, I began helping out at a place that trained wrestlers. At that time, it was called the Superstars Pro Wrestling Training Camp owned by Roland Alexander (later to be known as All Pro Wrestling). In those initial years, Roland's role model of how to book and run a promotion was promoter Roy Shire who was in charge of the San Francisco territory in the 60s and 70s. In contrast to what WWF and WCW were doing, he wanted to see wrestling be presented seriously and believably. He was also a stickler for ring psychology and wanted whatever was done in a match to make logical sense and to tell a story. By early 1997, I had stopped helping out at the wrestling school (just before Barry Blaustein brought in his film crew to record footage for the Beyond The Mat movie). By that time, in my opinion, Roland had relaxed his views on the product he wanted to present, and I think much of what happened in the Gym Wars shows reflects this. I think that was also the result of the direction of where the wrestling business was going. I didn't like what it was becoming. I don't watch any current wrestling now and haven't over the last 15-20 years. I like watching all kinds of old footage up through the 1980s of promotions from the U.S. and around the world, and I also like hearing Jim Cornette's stories from the old days as well as stories from other wrestlers from back at that time, but that's the extent of it. So coming from this perspective, I echo his concerns with the state of the business today.

Cornette has done his fair share silly and questionable things in pro wrestling. The wrestling Ninja Turtle. Taking a legend like Bob Armstrong that was far past his prime and trying to convince fans he could whip guys 40 years his junior. Dixie Dynamite. Lol. Come on. Kenny Omega did TWO questionable comedy matches ten years ago. Jerry Lawler did a kiss my foot angle and Cornette loves him more than anyone. And i can guarantee Lawler has done some really silly gimmicks thru his career. And I'm a Jerry Lawler fan. Just saying that Cornette is being really hypocritical when it comes to guys like Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi and Chuck Taylor. I can understand the hatred for Joey Ryan due to how over the top ridiculous the dick suplex is. But Cornette has promoted and been involved in a lot of this ilk as well throughout his career. If he were straight up like Lou Thesz was, who never participated in any silly gimmick I would give it to Cornette for at least being real, but when you bash one person for doing something silly, but support another wrestler, while also have participated in silly things yourself albeit minimually you are being a hypocrite.

Dave S I think it's not just omega just the crazy dives and things like that. It's not wrestling.
@diggitydave754387 жыл бұрын
Jacob Schwantz I'm not trying to talk shit. But the crazy dives are planchas. Planchas are part of pro wrestling. Planchas come from the Lucha Libre style of pro wrestling. There are many different styles of pro wrestling and lucha is one. Now can too many dives be done in a match where they lose effect? Yes. I agree. But "crazy dives" or planchas have a place in pro wrestling.
@jacobschwantz98157 жыл бұрын
Dave S i will say you're right about dive do have a place. What I should of said is too many dives. What i meant by crazy like doing a 720 dive jumping back up and doing 3 moves. That's what I meant and my fault.
@diggitydave754387 жыл бұрын
Jacob Schwantz I hear you on that. I can't stand no selling either. If someone hits a 450 or a 630 senton that should be the ball game for the wrestler that took it. Plus the wrestler that did that dive should sell the pain of giving a dive that crucial like Rob Van Dam and Too Cold Scorpio would do. I'm a fan of the Young Bucks because I've watched them for a decade and I've seen them do great things in the ring. BUT.....I've also seen them do some dumbass things as well that irks the hell out of me. I started watching pro wrestling in 1985 when i was 4 years old. I'm from North Carolina and grew up on Jim Crockett Promotions. But in the late 80's i started ordering tapes of all the other territories and in the 1990's i started watching ECW, All Japan, New Japan, CMLL, AAA and all of the foreign stuff. Through the years I've watched pro wrestling as far back as The Gorgeous George, Verne Gagne early tv era of the late 1940's and early 1950's to the modern era from all over the world. I have a decent collection of All Japan Pro Wrestling from the 1970's to 2000 plus every where else. I just mentioned All Japan Pro Wrestling because i have over 1000 of their best matches downloaded. I'm a fan of great pro wrestling no matter the style. Whether it's Johnny Valentine vs Wahoo McDaniel from the Carolinas; Jerry Lawler vs Bill Dundee from Memphis; Ric Flair vs Ricky Steamboat in Jim Crockett Promotions and WCW; Dynamite Kid vs Tiger Mask from New Japan; Eddie Guerrero & Art Barr vs Octagon & El hijo del Santo from AAA; Perro Aguayo Jr vs Mistico from CMLL; Mitsuharu Misawa vs Toshiaki Kawada from All Japan; Bruiser Brody vs Abdullah the Butcher in WWC; Bret Hart vs Owen Hart in WWF; Dean Malenko vs Chris Jericho in WCW; The Heavenly Bodies vs The Fantastics in Smoky Mountain; Bryan Danielson vs Nigel McGuinness in ROH; Kevin Steen vs El Generico in PWG; The Revival vs Johnny Gargano & Tommasso Ciampa in NXT; Pete Dunne vs Travis Banks in PROGRESS; or Kenny Omega vs Kazuchika Okada in New Japan. Great pro wrestling is great pro wrestling, no matter the era or style. I just dig great pro wrestling. But i understand when guys making it look silly irks old school fans because I'm an old school fan too.

@diggitydave754387 жыл бұрын
It's all about taste. Just because Jim Cornette doesn't like a wrestler, it doesn't make him right that the wrestler is bad and that the fans are bad for liking said wrestler. Harley Race thought that Jerry Lawler was nobody and that's Cornette's favorite wrestler (personally I'm a fan of both Lawler and Race). Lou Thesz thought guys like Abdullah the Butcher and The Sheik were horrible for pro wrestling, but those were two huge drawing heels that were great at their gimmicks. There are cats on here that don't like WWE's style of doing things and there are folks that don't like promotions like NJPW. Then there are promotions like PWG that fans either seem to love or hate. That's what was great about the territory era of pro wrestling and what's great about pro wrestling now, unlike the early 2000's when WCW & ECW died & WWE was the only real show in the United States, New Japan was seriously struggling due to Inoki wanting it to be a shoot style promotion, All Japan was undergoing a serious change due to Keiji Mutoh's bastardizing Kings Road style, Pro Wrestling NOAH had yet to hit their stride, CMLL was in their pre Mistico-Perro Aguayo Jr. boom, Ring of Honor was just starting, and the British independent scene had yet to blow up. Now we have great pro wrestling in a variety of styles all over the world again.

But there is one guy in AEW that I really like and his promos and I didn’t even know about him until watching the Rasslin podcast on Barstool with Brandon Walker, I think it’s MJF or something like that. O jag ent seen his work yet, which I’m about to look up some when i wake up. How can you have such a big grudge against Kenny Omega, about shit that happend several years ago? I respect Corny, but he is so wrong about Omega that it hurts my stomach. Omega is a great pro-wrestler who inside the ring barely does any "goofy shit" and dosen't need to do any of that, to get a crowd behind like half of the roster in the WWE or Impact. I watched the whole Wrestle Kingdom 12 card last week and it was a roller coaster ride from beginning to end, without me being bored for a second and that's something i barely had in american wrestling for the last few years. New Japan is the best Wrestling Promotion in the world right now.
@Tenchigumi7 жыл бұрын
It's kind of a shame that Cornette basically boycotts everything associated with Omega due to some goofy indy stuff from the past, because by extension it means that he's boycotting NJPW. Cornette likely hasn't seen anything from NJPW outside Omega's first spectacular (but overhyped) match with Okada, and it's telling that he thinks NJPW is all about "clowns and jugglers" when, ironically, they're probably right up his alley in terms of seriousness and "simulated combat." Anything involving Naito, Okada, Tanahashi, Suzuki, etc. tend to lean towards stone-cold intensity with sprinkles of well-placed humor, and they can sell the drama and damage of fights like no one else today. But I don't think Cornette will realize that anytime soon. In any case, when it comes to Omega and anything involving NJPW, you can probably be sure Cornette's talking (angrily) out of his ass.
@HyperActive77 жыл бұрын
Like it or not, Corny, Kenny Omega puts butts in seats. I feel the same way about Japanese wrestling these days. Haven't liked since the 90s. Now it's permeated so much into the American indie circuit over the last 15 years into this "pseudo strong style" bullshit where they beat each other up for real and it looks like shit and do all these meaningless high spots with no psychology that only serves to shorten their own careers for how severe the bumps are, it just fucking disgusts me. WWE is even guilty of it to an extent now with the majority of the main roster now loaded with the sub-six foot tall indie darlings going out there to do "video game wrestling" where they don't sell anything and worry more their choreographed acrobatics than portraying what is supposed to be a believable fight between two guys that hate each other.

Kevin Miliandrovic how am I talking out of my ass? Did I hallucinate Kenny Omega dressed up as a Disney Princess in The Ring?
@EvGriff1387 жыл бұрын
I've seen you in multiple comment threads now bringing up the same three points to justify your argument. Oh wow, a wrestler dressed up on Halloween. That's certainly not been done before. First off, his "joke wrestling" was in a promotion called DDT and that's what they do. That's what the management does. It's Japan. And he's a new wrestler that, how i think most new wrestlers would do, does what management asks to be in good standing with the company paying you. You're focusing your whole argument on 1) a gag for a Japanese wrestling company that does that sort of stuff because it's accepted there 2) a video with a girl he was training that was not even meant to go public and 3) that he dressed up for Halloween. In the meantime, you're ignoring the other 99.9% of his career that the rest of us have watched and seen to be known as the high caliber of talent he is. But seeing that you referred to it in your original comment as "Jim and I" like you two are best buds when he probably doesn't give two shits about you, I chalk it up to you just talk out of your ass.

Kevin Miliandrovic let's say I just had a frontal lobe lobotomy and forgot about all the wacky, zany shit Kenny Omega did before this year, while remembering he won the G1 in 2016. Why is the winner of The G1 dressed-up as a Disney Princess for Halloween? What princess did Okada dress up as? The problem with folks defending Omega is that they don't want wrestling to actually be a work. They don't feel it's necessary for Omega to actually try to suspend any of my disbelief. If wrestling is supposed to be a work, shouldn't Omega try to, you know, actually work his audience into believing he's an actual badass, as opposed to just telling them so after interviews?

Jim just needs to admit that Kayfabe is dead, and it died 2 decades before Kenny Omega got into the business, and Omega got a 4 star match out of the blow up doll, and a 4 star match with the 9 yr old girl and fuckin got over himself. Carney Wrestling is dead and you can't(and shouldn't anyway because Carney Wrestling is for losers and conmen) put the toothpaste back in the tube. You don't need to trick people to get them to watch wrestling. And that's the core idea of Cornette's approach, that you can't make the "real money" unless you fucking scam people. I love Cornette, great storyteller good dude, smart guy, but his dogmatic ideas of wrestling and how we should all go back to the stone age is getting old as fuck. PWG gets over, DDT and Stardom are comedy feds in Japan that makes fun of WWE for Japanese audiences and develop talent, and put smiles on faces, let it go. NJPW is probably the embodiment of everything Cornette thinks wrestling should be, and they have no problem working in guys like the Bucks and Omega and Kota Ibushi(they even reference his homosexual character to bury him like rasslin would and he's still over like rover) The days of fat hairy dog faced racists assholes with women chained to radiators in their dungeons and name their stockholm syndrome captives "Woman" and "Babydoll" is dead, and thank fucking millennials for that. Let's keep that shit where it belongs Cornette's stories, and Dave Meltzer's history books. As for Jericho-Omega, I don't know how you could hate a guy like Omega, a guy who's the 2nd or 3rd best worker in the world and is still a good enough guy to let a dad-bod out-of-shape 47-year-old do the layout and call the fucking match because Jericho can't go 30 in the dome because he's out of shape and has to take 900 shortcuts with furniture. P.S all the WWE marks that was Omega's worst match in 2 years. If you liked it, and you probably should considering the shit McMahon shoves down your throat after shooting some of his cum in your eye then you've got a lot of NJPW to watch, fucking enjoy, cuz it's great.
