I was in LA during Roddy's run there. He was a genius at stirring up the crowd. Hector Guerrero was receiving a clock from the promotion; Roddy entered the ring and busted the clock over Hector's head. Dick Lane (announcer) demanded that Roddy apologize, and Roddy said "why? he can't tell time anyway." He feuded with Chavo. And we should always remember the time he came to the ring with his bagpipes saying he was going to play the Mexican National Anthem, and then breaking into a rendition of La Cucaracha. Roddy wrote his own stuff and spent a lot of time on it. There was a documentary on him that showed his extensive note and scripts. He knew it was key to everything he did, and took it completely seriously. He was a true family man but also 100% into his wrestling. He was twice as rowdy in his sleep as Ronda has been in her last 10 matches combined; she really needs to ditch that monicker. There was and always will be only one.

I was in the restaurant business at the time working as a cook and remember Andre the Giant and Piper coming in for lunch and them asking to talk to me and I went and sat with them in the bar and had a grand old time shooting the bull. Mr. Piper wasn't too happy that I was a fan of Mr. Rose but I think that he got it that I was a smart fan because I complimented both of them. Some people might even say that I was a smart ass fan. My friends and I used to go to the Portland sports arena cheering and waving signs rooting for the bad guys. I remember all the young girls wanting to poke our eyes out with pencils and old ladies pokingly umbrellas at us. Also almost got into it with Rocky Johnson. Ah yes the good old days.

My favorite match of Roddy's took place on March 23, 1983 in Sunrise, Florida. He was scheduled to work the main event against Dusty Rhodes that night, but Dusty failed to appear due to a missed flight connection. The replacement for Rhodes ended up being Barry Windham. Windham vs. Roddy Piper was a far better matchup for my money than had Piper faced Rhodes. I was thrilled with what ensued. Piper started beating the hell out of Barry and busted Windham open with a series of stiff shots. Barry was bleeding like a stuck hog. Barry then started mounting a comeback on Roddy, and fired back with a barrage of punches, then a nice vertical suplex, and a solid knee drop to the head. Piper was pretty dazed. Around this time, all of the heels came out of the dresssing room and started to surround the ring, seemingly to back up Piper if he began to lose. To combat this, all of the babyfaces came out of the other dressing room and started to surround the ring on the other side, in case there was interference. It began to look like an impromptu lumberjack match at rhis point. Roddy began to take control again, and was beating Windham down, much to the encouragement of the heel wrestlers who had surrounded the ring. After a couple of minutes of solid attacks, Piper even executed a piledriver on Windham, but Barry still powered out of the pin. Barry, still bloodied and beaten down, started to mount another comeback, and had Piper reeling. Barry then hit both a sunset flip, and also an inside cradle for near falls. Roddy started to get nervous, and gave a signal, at which point all of the heels who had come out to ringside all piled in to the ring all at once, and they all started pummeling Barry Windham. Terry Allen, Brad Armstrong, Scott McGhee and all of the babyfaces that had come out, all jumped in the ring and started brawling with the heels that were attacking Barry. It looked like a battle royal. It took several minutes to get the ring cleared after this near riot situation occurred. Once the dust settled, the ring announcer grabbed the mic and declared that "Roddy Piper has been disqualified for massive interference." Not just interference, but "massive interference". This was the type of chaos that followed Roddy everywhere that he went during those times. It was a great card that night at the Sunrise Musical Theater, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks for the memories, Roddy. You were one of a kind.

Piper knew to get anything over you had to sell it with not just move sets but body language too. The fact that he reached the "perfect gimmick" of being a highly exaggerated version of the real person is a testament of his work (Corny has that ability too). There hasn't been a person like Piper. I know there's comparisons to MJF these days but I think that's more in line with the big ideas of how to draw heat. But Piper's personality in and out of the ring is what made him so special. No could talk like Piper. He would start off slow then work himself into a rage where you didn't know if he was going to explode because he seemed like he was always on the edge. He had that snarky, bizarre tick of a laugh which made you question how much sanity he had left. He was so animated in the way he talked that you could turn off the volume and still be fascinated. Every interview he did especially in his prime was mesmerizing not just because of the words he used but how he express himself both his tone and physical motions to emphasize every little thing. I just saw the Lawler-Piper setup that was going to take place and kept hearing how Lawler described Piper as a motor mouth. And it's true. The second he grabbed the mic that was it. I think Mean Gene was the only person that could barely interview him because the rest of the announcers trying to do an interview would just be run over by this guy. Also, this guy knew exactly what buttons to push. Even if he was "working" with talent in doing those promos, they always seemed to be disheartened to have to sit with him. He gave off that "bad news" vibe where you weren't going to stand a chance of getting a word in edge wise. I remember seeing in amazement the one promo he did with Capt Lou as they were setting up the award for MS where Piper was starting to take Lou's credit for everything in leading to the Lauper/Lou/Hogan bit. For once, it was Lou who shut up. I always described Piper as being something of a hybrid between Steve Martin's "The Jerk", Robin Williams with the insane energy, quick wit (and coke) and animated mannerisms. But i think the thing about Piper is that he knew he had to be unique somehow. So he became the loudest, craziest, etc. person in wrestling. There's that video of him smashing a beer bottle across his forehead then bleeding. Not sure how gimmicked that beer bottle was but considering it was Piper, I'm sure it was real to a degree. Also, I agree with the guy asking questions about post WM3 Piper. He lost a lot of his oomph. I think part of it was that he wanted to retire and get into acting but probably had problems either getting typecast or not getting enough parts and just fell back to what he was used to. Also, he had that hip surgery which probably slowed him down immensely. It was sad seeing him in WCW especially when he faced Hulk Hogan in the cage match where people called it "age in a cage." I still thought he was great on the mic no matter what but the energy he used to be able to deliver wasn't the same. But people should really check out his older stuff. It's not fancy wrestling but it's the psychology behind what he did that made him special.
@danielcasteel34262 жыл бұрын
What an incredible way to end that story. ".. the guy was twitchin' & Piper only had ahold of him for 15 seconds." No Brian, Pipers promos absolutely stand out to this day e.g. if you say They Live to almost any adult they will quote his kick ass and chew bubblegum line.

It's good to see Jim again I missed a day because stupid Rogers internet had a hacker shut it down everyone with Rogers from banks ,ATM, store's and I'm pissed because I missed Jim's show but all of Canada got nailed if you were with Rogers. Now I'm happy love this show.

Gavin says : I read in the nature boys book that Piper and himself travelled to Canada and he sang the US national in a high pitched squeaky voice and the people were a bit vocal and then another time got caught drinking together and caused chaos!!!

Piper had a freelance type of existence that was unique with the kilt the bagpipes, the pit, he had a wild whacky unpredictable attitude and with his behavior. He adapted very well to that showmanship emphasis that took off in the 1980s. But, he was overall very average inside the ring when it came to his matches. No finisher. I guess his best in ring work had to be before the 80s. I watched the Mid-Atlantic in the 70s and I just don't recall too much Piper then. Maybe my memory has faded. Flair and Rhodes, Wahoo, Paul Jones, the Andersons, Blackjack Mulligan, Johnny Valentine, Magnum TA.

I just started watching wrestling 3 years ago. Never got the appeal of Piper whatsoever but I love that era. Took it on myself recently to read his book “Rowdy” and 100% got a new appreciation for him and his work. From the Flower Shop interview to his match with Bret Hart to the Buzz Sawyer promos, Roddy was the man and wrestling is indebted to him. The man couldn’t drive worth a shit though haha

Tommy Rich & Dick Slater bring in George Steele for back up as a face. Hot Rod remained unimpressed, "George Steele? Strong as an ox. And he's almost as smart."
