His entrance at the 96 Survivor Series always gets me jacked up. Dude was one of a kind, and the most intense wrestler of all time. Hell, every time they paired him with HBK in an attempt to get Shawn over HE ended up getting over.

Hell, even at WM 11 the crowd was cheering Sid's name even as Shawn was tearing it up in the ring with Diesel. By Survivor Series 96, Shawn got booed out of MSG and the "smart" New York crowd was cheering Sid. Even when he beat up an old man lol.

@Telly Delucca when Shawn brought Sid in as his bodyguard in 95, at Mania that year the crowd cheered more for Sid just for standing outside the ring then for either Shawn or Diesel inside the ring. And when Shawn brought him back again in 96 to replace Warrior, Sid was getting such positive reactions from the crowd that they scrapped plans to put the title on Vader and put it on Sid instead. Yes, Shawn had a say in it as he preferred working with Sid over Vader, but still. And yes Shawn got over, but by Nov. 96 his popularity began to wane. Blame it on fickle fans if you want, Shawn's act had gone stale and the fans prolly just wanted to cheer somebody new. By 97 when Shawn fully turned heel, a lot of the heat he was generating was go away heat. Sid's popularity at the time was pretty inexplicable, but it was also undeniable. It's cliche, but Sid had "it", and in a lot of ways represented the soon to come Attitude Era, with fans cheering bad ass antiheros and booing white meat babyfaces, which is what Shawn was in 96 by his own admission.

Sid was more over as a face than shawn in 96. But because he was unpredictable and didnt always work with the promoter, he never had any long term plans.

And that hate for Shawn didn't just last one night, Shawn was teasing a heel turn up until RR 97 when the crowd reaction for him in San Antonio was so big they scrapped it. And what MSG show two months later are you referring to? A house show?! The WWF didn't run another televised show from MSG until Sept. 97, when Austin stunned McMahon. You're saying that Shawn was the company's top babyface at that time, and that is true. I'm saying whenever Shawn and Sid worked together, either in singles against each other or in tags as partners, Sid was the more popular of the two (with the exception of RR 97, which was in Shawn's hometown)

To clear up the stabbing incident, Arn started it. Arn stabbed Sid first and for a guy who "couldn't really fight", he went berserk on Arn and could have killed him. According to EVERYONE who was there, Arn was the one who faced jail time and Sid was acting in self defense, even if it was a bit extreme.

This---I'm usually on board with Jim, but he's off base here (or at least just reciting Arn's version of the story). Sid had admitted that he was talking bad about Flair & that's what started it, but Arn didn't like how the fight ended initially (Sid going over?), and was trying to kick Sid's hotel room in & that's why Sid broke off a chair leg. Sid said he wanted the fight to be over, but he wasn't going to let Arn just walk over him, so he felt he was protecting himself.

Yes, but he was still officially, in WWF labelled as Sid Justice in that run, calling him 'psycho' was just because it rolled off the tongue, it probably carried no implication of it being billed into his name, nor was it a phrase directed for Gorilla to say. It's like a number of things that it's only once it's been said or linked for a long time that someone has the spark to say 'let's go with that', which happened much later.

I was always biased towards Sid because in my whole lifetime of watching wrestling, he's the only wrestler I actually ever met in person. It was in Newark airport in 1996 and he was on his way to a PPV in Canada. I was a little nervous because I knew his history, but he was super nice and couldn't be any further from his on screen persona. The business today could use that kind of intense big man. He's the type of character Braun Strowman should be.

I love Arn but it was fairly evident Arn was not guiltless in that scissor fight. He instigated the fight and after it got calmed down and they were in their rooms, Sid went to Arn's room screaming in the hallway. Arn never had to open the door, least of all with scissors in his hand, determined to stab a dude. You can't stab a guy and magically be in the right when the weapon you introduced gets used against you. Jim has his faves and his brain kind of breaks trying to defend them.

And based on the type of cancer, sadly cornette was spot on here. Love corny, but it sucks hearing him say this and turn out to be right. I’m almost 100% on board with Corny’s assessment of wrestlers, but I don’t think he gives Sid enough credit here in terms of what he brought to the table. Sid had a god given charisma you can’t teach. He “was money” just like Nash has said in the past. He had a few fumbles on the mic, but looking back on some promos from that last run at the end of the new generation era he cut some truly next level interviews - especially the empty Alamo dome one before beating HBK. For the title. I was in elementary school when he returned as HBKs body guard and nobody drew me to the tv the way Sid did. I’ll be interested to see Cornette’s reflection on his passing. Jim tells it like it is from his perspective but when someone passes away he tends to slow up, be more reflective, and dig a little deeper into his thoughts so whatever he says, I’m excited to hear it. And personally, I’m the Sid belongs in the HOF camp.

Mr G Yes, there may of been one or two house shows in early 91 to wrap things up, but I believe by the end of December 90 the TV show was officially over. It sucked they had to go. Even at the end, by the fall of 90, it was still the no. 3 U.S. promotion with a long history and a place to work for upcoming stars and on-the-way-out vets, and get TV and mag exposure. There was still a small, loyal fanbase to AWA that actually liked how Verne didn’t cave into gimmicks and wanted a more serious presentation

Honestly Sid is one of my favorite big men of all time. He may not have been anything too special in the ring, but he checked all the other boxes that make a wrestler fun to watch as a fan. Look, charisma, intensity, and he was committed to whatever gimmick he was working. In the ring, he was at least safe and some of his shit did look good, like his powerbomb.

Over here in Belfast . I saw him take on the undertaker. It was iconic seeing them doing their nose to nose spot in real life... Anyway I was ringside and Sid and taker were outside the ring. Big Sid had a crappy fold up Irish wooden chair (no steel ones) lol And as Big Sid was pummelling him with it. Some fool threw something at Sid. Without missing a beat, Sid turns and with evil intensity and veins everywhere turns round and yells "cmon you effing bastit"... Always loved Sid . I remember after a WCW event I saw Sid, As I approached to get an autograph, he was leaning up against the wall talking to another man in dress clothes and it was several of us kids around him, he told us no, he was not signing any. I was asked as an adult if this bothered me. Thinking back, I said no. I never expected the Sid Vicious I saw in the ring to be a nice, friendly "gentleman" He was keeping kayfabe for all I know, but I expected nothing less from a Monster in the ring.

Maybe if he had been treated like Brock Lesnar today he'd have been more successful. He could have worked the 5 big ppvs of the time (Rumble, Mania, King of the Ring, Summerslam and Survivor Series) and show up on Raw every now and then to do absolutely nothing, maybe occasionally beat someone up and very very rarely get into a brawl.
