Smoky Mountain Wrestling is still awesome despite going out of business in late 95. It wasn't until October last year I started binging Smoky on KZbin and it hooked me in instantly. The storylines are still better than what AEW and WWE are doing. Legit interesting creative stories, feuds, wrestlers you can get behind ( Not Tim Horner). Dutch Mantell is hilarious as a heel commentator " Welcome to down and dirty with Dutch. I'm Dutch Mantell and your not". Just a shame not all special are on KZbin unlike the episodes which they are. I was able to see their first big show Volunteer Slam. I'm on 93 so far. Also love Bob Armstrong as Commissioner

@bdr113080 Жыл бұрын
Mine too. When he first started the podcast, it felt like he was talking about it twice a month and I understand that you can’t cover one topic but for so much. It’s probably a good idea to leave it as something to come back to a few times a year, but I really don’t care about modern wrestling at all, I love pro wrestling but when I want to watch wrestling I’m going to watch wrestling from the 80s and 90s I don’t care about what is going on today. I love hearing Jim talk about Smoky Mountain wrestling. My brother and I would watch it every Saturday, it would come on after WCW worldwide, where we lived in North Carolina. Back then you didn’t have the Internet, so when it went out of business, it’s not like that it was a major announcement. Where we lived they still had enough shows taped that the two weeks before our Christmas break at school. Smoky mountain was still on. When we got back home in January, I remember that first Saturday where all the sudden Smoky Mountain Wrestling wasnt on anymore and they had replaced it with USWA. Which at that time was basically WWF really Just swapped. The heels or the baby faces and the WWF baby faces were the heels . We didn’t know if all of the sudden Smoky Mountain was still on the air and we just want a kid anymore or what . As much as I love the Monday night war era of both WCW and WWF the older I get I really find myself missing and having fonder memories of wrestling in the first half of the 90s. Mainly WCW Saturday night in Smoky Mountain wrestling.

Smokey Mountain was my first live wrestling event as a kid in the early 90s in Beckley, WV. Met and got the Rock & Roll Express's autographs. Since then I've seen Rock & Roll Express at various Indy shows. Saw them live more than anyone else.

Yep especially bc he's talking about running a small manageable territory...no corporate conglomerate bullshit. As he explains handshake deals with local business promotions and contracts with the radio and tv stations and boom .. You're got a great territory. Sad this model died (actually got killed). It's the greatest ire of Jim's rants ... Just add Suits...

The shows were good every week. Two of my favs were Arn Anderson under a sheet, and Cornette hits the floor in shock, and the Dirty White Boy burning the Confederate flag in a trash can in the middle of the ring. Tracy Smothers was handcuffed to the ring. Very glad to see that some of those episodes are on KZbin.

I was always told that because Tennessee never had a professional NFL team, was the reason the college and high school teams were so popular. I have been told that now the Titans are there it is a little different, but high school and college football is still huge. Similar to but in reverse to Green Bay. Because the Wisconsin college and high school teams are not as successful on the national stage, the whole state gets behind their professional football team, including paying for a slice of ownership of the team.

I love Corny and rasslin', but why does it always have to be 15 years behind its time? Smoky Mountain was around in the early 90s, not the late 70s. Maybe the southern US is different, but people aren't going to watch a product that is 2 decades behind the times. You can still have that rasslin' style updated for the 90s. Smoky Mountain did that with the Gangstas - though I might take issue with how that was presented.
@Clubber-Slang3 жыл бұрын
then you need to take issue with how anything "gangsta" was represented in the 90s.
@z2ei3 жыл бұрын
You have to know your audience. The Gangstas segments are great, but Cornette's said in the past that it was driving people *away* more than it was getting them into arenas to see the faces beat them.
@theecharmingbilly3 жыл бұрын
His audiences wanted Southern Wrestling 1970's style. It almost worked out but the business was in the shatter for everyone and he couldn't hang on. He would find even greater success with OVW. At least critically, and in his own creative mind he says that was his best run.
