This was a great match. Pumped for this review. One of the most hilarious things to me is the people that are claiming that there was "no difference" between this show and the 25 car pile up that is Dynamite every week with everybody's severed limbs hanging off the windshield. This first Collision was like AEW produced an episode of Raw or SmackDown, more wrestling, less promos, but essentially a safe, predictable, solid wrestling show that didn't insult anybody's intelligence. Great! I refuse to believe this was booked by Tony, outside of maybe Wardlow losing to Lucha Sore Ass. LOL.

A good match and a good ending to a solid show overall. If Collison is going to be the more traditional "old school wrestlin show" with Dynamite being a more modern wrestling show then I think this episode did a good job of establishing that. I look forward to next week's show.
@keithyw
@keithyw Жыл бұрын
you definitely could sense a whole new vibe for this show and match. FTR looking at their watch along with Punk with Dax doing "It's clobbering time!" along with Punk, you could tell Dax was extra motivated. Joe was calm and collected and I think Jay White has a subtle role as a strategist. Juice Robinson has personality which works nicely as a foil to Jay White's kinda bland calmness. But the atmosphere for this match was pretty good if you look at the variables involved. I didn't think the crowd was going to be that into Punk and Joe confronting/teasing their moments. In retrospect, now that I see what they did here, especially with the entire show, um, i don't know, ACTUALLY BEING/FEELING LIKE A REAL WRESTLING SHOW, this match was smartly put together. First, it was a main event. You started with Punk, you ended with Punk. It positioned all those people as main eventers or near the main event for this show going forward. Having a 6 man actually made a lot of sense with Punk coming off of injury. He had two guys as his partners who are his legitimate friends and have his back but also can pick up the slack so that Punk can be shown, do a few key spots, do the teases against Joe and hide the fact that he would have ring rust. I honestly didn't care before I saw this match. I knew about Punk wanting to work with Jay White and Joe but at that point, I didn't see the potential. The presentation here makes me curious and got me invested in the people involved. Maybe it was the slowing down of the matches, having actual builds, the announcing, the production, the lead up, etc. Yeah Juice got pinned but he got pinned by Punk and made Punk look good in the process. He did his job perfectly. There was no stupid afterbirth of an angle. They let Punk/FTR's win breathe rather than having the losers make a stupid comeback. From a match psychological point of view, this thing built. FTR hit their finisher and let Punk (the star) hit his. Joe teased that he could possibly knock Punk out but FTR pulled in at the last second. They had drama with momentum shifts not with every move but in sections. This is what I want to see in wrestling. And Corny/Brian talked about the announcing. Kevin Kelly/Nigel aren't the most excited/funny/over-the-top announcers but the grounded the show. The most important thing that happened here was that you didn't have the announcers running over each other, especially Excalibur who seems like a rude person with no sense of self-awareness. Each announcer got to say their bit, there was knowledge given, they tried to tell the big picture story, they were reacting to the match and it just felt like Smackdown in the early 2000s except with different people. I did feel bad for Jim Ross. I know the blame was put on the fall but JR's voice has been rough for a while. I've listened to his podcast a few times and the big thing I noticed was how he smokes like a chimney. At his age, that can't be good. I think he did this show just as a fan more than anything. He probably wanted to be part of the atmosphere since it's a brand new show, a new start, he probably had an inkling of what to expect with the more overall professional presentation and he's a Punk/FTR fan. So I didn't mind him being there, even though we didn't get good ol' JR. I do agree with Corny in that Jim should be used as a special attraction announcer/analyst at this point. Obviously, JR is going to do what he wants to do at this stage but in terms of where he would be most effective, it's kinda like a Gordon Solie spot where you bring him in for the big matches/moments that matter. In the moments, where his voice wasn't as rough, I did hear some of that old JR and he still loves what he does and can be a good hype man. From an overall view, if AEW had started off like this, the WWE would have been much more worried. This show isn't completely different from old wrestling from the early 2000s, which isn't a bad thing but if that's what they're going to aim for, I don't have an issue. There was a definite plan it felt in place. Whatever chaos forms a typical Dynamite or Rampage show just wasn't here. I don't know who produced this or the agents for the matches, but whatever they did for this show, just keep it for now. I know I'll continue to watch this program if we see more of the general content presented the way it was here.

@Parmesan Cheese Addict oh their Canadian tour is going to bomb. Not because of punk, collision, or aew, but whoever planned this. 4 shows in a week in the Toronto area, 2 in Saskatchewan (for those who don't know, would be like having two shows in Montana) and the one in Calgary is right in the middle of the Stampede week.

I love Punk, but he definitely needs to improve physically (both physique and performance). I know there's a lot of ring rust contributing along with playing it safe because of the triceps injury, but he really is going to have to work hard to step it up along side these other great workers (especially FTR).

@jmannxiiiaaron

@@CHUCKECHEESERANCH Technically no since TRT is hormone therapy, but even if it was, the whole drug-free thing is more speaking to recreational drugs/drug use. Otherwise, Advil, Tylenol, antibiotics, and even caffeine would be off limits (since caffeine is a drug). Honestly, I think any male over the age of 40 should automatically go on TRT if it's safe for them to. I've seen numerous people benefit from it in pretty much every aspect of their life.

@@jmannxiiiaaron Punk is famously so anti-drug that he won't even take basic painkillers like Tylenol. From the looks of him it seems he likely feels the same way about TRT which is a shame. Like you said, for a man his age, it's more a medical thing now but also it will allow him to carry more muscle and stay leaner. He never had a great body really but I agree, he needs to get on the gear.

That was such a good tag match! Felt very old school! CMFTR reminds me too much of the hart foundation with Bret, Neidhart, and Smith/Pillman. A great stable. Of course, Punk/Samoa Joe have a rivalry very reminiscent of Bret vs. Piper. But I kind of like the history between Punk/Samoa Joe more (no disrespect to Piper/Bret).

If Tony is actually letting Punk write and/or book the show and continues to do so while actually learning from what Punk is doing, he can *really* make the company a viable competitor to WWE in terms of the overall quality of the product even though they are already second to them in terms of money and sheer size.

@@Colt2OO2 totally agree, the guys on collision are proper wrestlers who know the business, tony just needs to let them get on with it, just wish he would let the pros who work backstage at aew more control on dynamite instead of letting folks like the bucks do anything they want. Tony khan definitely needs to stop being a fanboy and be a boss and stop letting wrestlers who've never been good enough for wwe free reign. They built up Joe's sleeper hold just enough, not too long and not too soon broken either. That's the key point in this review. If it was some Trampoline Humping Video Game Characters in the match, they would do about two dozens super kicks and within 10 secs, those who got super kicked would simply be running around and doing all the high flying over the top rope moves like they had their "shield" ability up like in a video game when super kicks fiesta was going on.
