Jim Flick - Golf's Most Common Faults and Cures

The late Jim Flick was one of golf's top instructors for decades and partnered with Jack Nicklaus to run the Nicklaus/Flick Golf Schools. Flick is from the Toski/Flick/Love/Jones/Kostis/etc school of thinking that the arms and hands control the golf swing and the body reacts. Or, as it is better known, "Swing the Clubhead."

Because I was born about when this was taped, I had never even heard of this teacher before. I feel like I’ve been missing out! I love his simple, straightforward approach to the game. Todays instructors tend to over complicate a already complicated game. His instruction is simple and easy to follow. Love it!

I have a book by Jack Grout called "Let me teach you golf as I taught Jack Nicklaus" It's out of print now, however imho it is the best golf instruction you can get. Jim Flick repeats some of the lessons here. This is a wonderful video that every golfer should watch.

After 20 years I discovered the "arm swing" is the only swing that enables me to hit the ball squarely with the club head. Every other "body swing" or "connection" method I used was irregular at impact, toward the heel, toward the toe with resultant loss of distance.Tommy Armour and Jim Flick turned my game around. Again, I'm certain the other methods work for some people or let's just say "swing YOUR swing". Whatever works.

Sounds like we are in the same boat. I spent almost 20 years with Leadbetter and "body swing" advocates. The problem with the body swing is that people ALWAYS thrust with their right shoulder, like swinging an axe. It's perfectly natural to swing an axe or a baseball bat that way. Totally wrong for golf.

"Good players not only have good posture but they do it consistently. Another reason for having a routine. So, here's what we'll see the player Bend from hips to let your arms suspend and hang. Your eye-line should be compatible with your target line. Remember posture is critical, don't be careless !" < over-the-top > 의 주된 원인 3가지 : (1) 손/팔이 너무 안쪽에서 백스윙을 할 경우, 다운스윙 때 recovery의 필요가 생겨 오바 더 탑을 하게 되는 경우 (2) 어깨턴을 하려는 노력을 너무 많이 했을 때, 어깨턴이 클럽을 inside로 들어오게 하고 flat 하게 해서 오바 더 탑이 필요하게 되는 경우 (3) 백스윙탑에 이른 후 방향변경을 하면서 너무 흥분해서 채를 outside로 던지게 될 때 발생하는 경우. (solution) 클럽이 해야 할 일에 대해서 마음속에 형상화시킨 그림을 갖도록 한다. 스윙이 진행되면서 따라가야 할 target line을 바닥에 흰 페인트로 그어놓고, 다운스윙 때 이 line 보다 조금 inside에서 body에 좀 더 가까운 상태로 내려오게 하는데.. 이것을 일종의 예술행위처럼 시각화하여 strike 하고자 하는 샷의 형태에 따라 서로 다른 백스윙과 다운스윙과 F - thru의 장면을 마음속에 그려보게 한다. *볼을 너무 멀리 보내고자하여 상체를 너무 과도하게 사용할 때에 균형을 잃어버리고 클럽이 볼에 접근하는 각도를 control할 제어능력을 잃어버려서 over - the - top이 되는데.. 특히 Driver 에서 많이 목격된다. - 우리는 거리욕심을 내면서 power가 더 멀리 가게한다고 여기면서 파워에 열중하는데...그것보다는 견실한(solid) center face hit가 필요하다. 그래서 클럽을 control하면서 swing할 필요가 생긴다. - 골프에서는 power와 speed는 동의어가 아니다. - 임팩트면에서 보면, 체중이동이 몸통의 sideway에서 일어나는 일이 아니란 걸 명심할 것. * Fade를 원하는 good player들이라면, 어깨가 살짝 열리게 하면서 impact 시에 hips도 약간 열리게 하지만.. 잭 니클라우스는 임팩트 시에 가슴(chest)이 target line을 보게 하여 팔이 올바른 각도에서 볼을 향하면서 strike 하게 하는데.. 피니쉬 때 적절한 balance를 갖추도록 한다. head position을 유지하면서/지키면서 eye-line을 변경하는 것은 좋은 훈련법 중 하나다. * 나(Jim Flick)는 desired impact position을 취해보는 연습을 해보는 걸 좋아한다. 가슴이 볼을 향해 facing down 하면서 target line에 평행하게 position을 취해보는 것인데.. - 오른발 뒤꿈치는 지면에서 약간 떨어지게(off) 하고 - 턱은 up 하고 - eye line은 target line과 맞게 하고.. 이런 자세로 작은 스윙을 해보면서.. 팔과 손이 볼을 때리는 것을 느껴보면서 몸통을 holding 하는 것이 습관이 될 정도로 익숙해지도록 한다. - 팔이 몸통을 지나가면서 볼을 solid 하게 strike 하는데.. 이 때의 느낌이 ... 당신이 좋아하는 임팩트 때의 position에 대한 clear picture를 마음속에 갖는 것이다. - 드라이버를 칠 때, 상체와 함께 이 position에 머무는 것이 문제가 될 때엔 왼발뒤꿈치를 들면 머리가 볼 뒤로 기울어지고, 볼 뒤로 이동하게 된다. - 왼발 heel을 떼고 샷을 하면, 생각했던 것보다 볼이 더 멀리 간다 (상향타격으로 approach angle이 correct 해서 그렇다) - 오른발을 뒤로 빼면, Balance를 잡기가 더 쉬워진다. - 다운스윙 때 몸통을 내리면서 몸통의 center로부터 twist를 하면.. hips이 너무 active 하게 되어 position에서 이탈하게 되어 클럽페이스의 (toe 부터 heel 까지) 이곳저곳에 공이 맞게 되어 very weak shot이 된다. 그런 고로 더 먼 거리를 내기위한 max 스윙을 하지 못하게 된다. (내가 제안하는 방법도) choke up on the club 하여 hitting shorter 하는 방법이다. - 발바닥 안쪽에서의 feeling 이 중요한데.. 지면으로부터 올라오는 movement를 느끼면서 발에서 > 무릎으로 > 왼쪽다리가랑이로 > 왼쪽 hip 의 순서로 choke up 하면서 foot > knee > thigh > hip 으로 느껴지는 .. 이렇게 방향을 변경하고 운동의 연결성이 이어지는 이런 훈련(법)이 좋다.

Interesting how instruction has changed. Also interesting how Nicklaus' idiosyncrasies are oft overlooked since there are nigh unbelievable results. (ie under plane takeaway, hunched back, humping the goat, shut face at the top, over the top, reverse c - all things on other players seen as a negative....but with 18 1sts and 22 2nds.....instructors have a cognitive dissonance with Nicklaus).

< 그린 주변에서 ball의 skull을 때리거나 볼 밑을 파는 실수/문제에 대하여 > (1) 먼저 공이 놓여있는 lie를 확인/점검할 것. lie의 상태를 진단하는데..지면의 경도와 볼에 미칠 영향을 점검한다. 마지막엔 hole cup 주변 몇 ft 의 상태를 점검한다. 볼과 홀컵의 중간지점에서 shot angle을 가늠해본다. 중간지점에서 삼각측량법으로 샷의 거리를 가늠해보는 것은 상당히 유용한 방법으로 거리감을 가늠하는 데에 도움이 된다. 이제 마음을 정했으면, imagination이 작동하게 하는 것이 중요하다. 지형과 경사를 따라 공이 어떻게 굴러갈 것인가를 predict 해보는데.. imagination이 확신을 갖는 데에 도움이 된다. 이 상황과 조건에 맞는 swing의 크기를 가늠해본다. * 자세를 갖추었으면 퍼팅을 행하는데... 어떤 이유로도 급하게 치려고 하면 절대 안 된다. - 맨 처음에 어드레스를 했을 때처럼, hips을 bend 하고 .. 두 발의 ball에 체중을 느끼면서 두 팔이 그냥 매달려 있게 하고.. 왼발에 체중을 더 싣고.. 하향타격(down blow)으로 퍼팅을 한다. - 거리를 얼마나 보내야 할 지 연습스윙을 두세번 하면서.. F - thru에는 신경을 쓰지 않고 스윙을 한다. 때론 우리의 신경이 날카로와지기도 하는데.. 너무 적은 스윙으로 snap을 이용하여 너무 빨리 스윙을 하는 사람이 많은데.. 볼과의 접촉이 일정하지 않으면 볼이 어떻게 될지 predict 할 수 없게 된다. (팔로 control 해야 된다) - 뒤땅을 치는 것은 스윙의 최저점이 볼 뒤쪽에 있는 경우다. 볼의 skull을 strike 하는 것도 뒤땅을 칠 때와 그 원인이 똑 같은데.. 퍼터를 땅에서 off 하게 들고 있을 때에 발생율이 높다. 절대로 손을 쓰는 snapping 을 하지 말 것. 탄도(trajectory)가 낮은 swing 이 좋다. < Bunker Play > 벙커샷을 할 때, 대가리를 때려서 공이 멀리 가게 하는 것은.. 스윙 중에 body가 뒤쪽으로 움직여서 그렇다. 한마디로 lead side (왼쪽)에 몸이 머물러(stay) 있지 않았기 때문이다. - 체중은 왼발에 있어야 한다. 또한 공이 너무 멀리 갈까봐 두려워서 짧은 스윙을 했기 때문이고.. 손을 과도하게 썼기 때문이다. - 문제가 생기는 경우는 언제나 클럽이 모래속으로 파고 들어갔을 때이다. 클럽을 knife 처럼 사용해서 너무 깊게 dig 하면 안 된다. - 클럽페이스가 늘 열였는지 (open) 늘 확인하라. - 손을 과도하게 쓰지 않도록 길고 느린 스윙을 할 것 (Do a longer and slower swing ) - 클럽의 Bounce를 이용하여 볼 밑에서 slide 할 수 있도록 할 것. - 클럽이 볼과 너무 가깝게 있지 않도록 주의 할 것. * long and slow, with open club-face * 긴 거리의 벙커스윙은 U 자와 같은 wider swing 이 필요하다. - 발가락(Toes)을 모래에 파묻고, 보다 얕은 각도의 스윙 (shallow swing)을 할 것. 벙커 샷이 친구가 되게 하라. 벙커샷은 절대로 공을 직접 치면 안 된다. 공의 놓여진 lie를 보고 모래의 양과 각도를 결정하라. 벙커샷은 어렵지 않다. 모래가 거리를 결정하게 하라. 자신의 샷에 믿음을 갖는 것이 좋다.
