I looked up DeGrasse Tyson on Wikipedia and learned he'd attended one of the same NYC elementary schools I did. No guff, we actually had a mini-planetarium in the basement, and I wonder if it existed when he had attended that school. We also had the occasional trip to the Hayden planetarium as kids as a day trip. I always remember the excitement about math and science I had as a kid, and am so thankful for teachers and professors in my life who shared that skill and excitement with us kids. Thanks, Neil.

Ok. This is for all the over excited nerds, that keep rambling about the comedians. This format is designed, ingeniously i add, for the 90% of Americans that are ignorant to the world of science. Neil deGrasse Tyson is using this as a tool to inspire and educate the part of the human race that is holding us back from furthering our future endeavors. He is the only scientists I know of, other than I guess Bill Nye, trying to bridge the gap. He should be applauded over his efforts, not spewing nerd rage over Sarah Silverman's pussy jokes. If you have a problem with this, you're part of the problem, not the solution.

This isn't the video to watch if you really want to learn something. The panel is ferocious about inserting their "funny" one-liners that at the halfway point, I had to turn to something else. I guess I just wasn't in the mood for a comedy show that used topics in science as the target of the jokes. Usually, with panels involving Neil deGrasse Tyson, you can expect a certain amount of levity, and that's fine. But, when the jokes and ad libs become the center point of the discussion, it's better to tune this in when you're in the mood for rather low-brow humor.

The target audience is not for the intelligentsia. Its trying to appeal to a larger audience. This could actually be a hit on prime time tv. Neil has long lamented about the ignorant electorate. I would have liked this better had more of the comedians' interruptions been more relevant to what the scientists were trying to say, [instead of] throwing them off of their train of thought in typical ADHD fashion. Though they did have a few good ones esp. at the beginning, but those were kinda tee-ball setups anyway -- You almost couldn't miss them, that is, if you were paying attention.

I don't even know what to say to that. If you didn't get it then it's not my fault. Not understanding something someone writes does not make the person who wrote it stupid. Some might argue that in comparison to the person who wrote it, it is you who is dumb. Really all you had to do was read a bit further down where someone already made your mistake. Oh well you know for next time, don't read half of something and then try to troll on it you might look dumb as a consequence.

This was fun to watch! I'd like it if the comedians had a bit more time to chime in and Sarah seems like she's at a loss for words most of the time, but there was good chemistry here and I think more segments like this will go smoother.

The really smart people know that NASA is mostly military/defense-oriented. Just most of it is not obvious to most. Neil wrote a book about it, even. About time there's a popular book addressing the issue. It's something I've been saying since I was a kid in the 80s. I'm going to go out on a limb, though, and guess that his book just scratches the surface, but I haven't read it yet.

Sarah, LOL! "No Jews on Mars" is not anti-Semitic, the whole planet is a dessert. 40 years is enough, already! THIS, we need?!.

Sarah is a Jew. If her saying that is antisemitism, then blacks calling each other the, "N" word would be racist.

@@pauldavidgraham6301 Yes, it was a joke. One of her funniest jokes is, "I was molested by my doctor, which is so bittersweet for a Jewish girl". What I was saying is that she was saying "No Jews on Mars" because the whole planet is a desert. The Bible claims the Jews wandered 40 years between Egypt and Israel/Palestine. The whole thing was an obvious joke, genius.

So brilliant to add comic releif to discussions like this. Its like combining art with science, biology and so on. Taking something most people would find boring and adding the complete opposite makes for a very e tertaining and informative discussion.

Instead of trying to physically send people to mars, why not build a mental computer that sends the conscious mind to mars?

Richard Strong Ok so in 2035 we will begin to send people to mars. Yet technology will be so advance in 5 years we will be able to send our thoughts and perceptions to mars. Scientist are already building a computer that understands dreams and is able to reproduce images and videos of our brain. And because this is not science fiction. We are now able to astral project our minds in a group to visit other places with a precise memory reproduction of 70 %. But hey.....I'm just a cook.........

schuyler sterling I would categorize it more of a Virtual trip , our advance camera and computation hardware are getting smarter, its in the hopes to encourage men and women to visit mars, or built a ship that could take us there fast enough. Meanwhile were stuck with rovers , GPS , iradium and advanced imaging sensors.

Why do I read your posts and have visions of Terminator?? It is not that easy to put human intelligence and problem solving into a computer.. We have machines that can imitate human behavior, we do not have a machine that can perform brain surgery by itself..
