3:30 - Just like Wil says that he invented a series of buttons to do each specific operation on the ship, William Hartnell, the first Doctor in Doctor Who said that the children would notice whether he was hitting the same buttons each time he did something, so it was extremely important that he remember, and that Patrick Troughton learn it (as long as they had the same console).

Not only do the doors open when you approach them on the ship. But they also sense when the character is going to stop and turn around for some more dramatic dialogue. They do. Check it out. DOOR: He wasn`t leaving, he`s got more to say, better stay closed or he`s going to look stupid.

Yeah people bash on Neil because he does so many "celebrity" type projects so they say he isn't a "real scientist". Really though they are just jealous that a dude that is that smart also has the personality and charisma to captivate audiences when talking about just about any topic. In summation--Neil is da man.

Any scientist can go out and do a talk about mindblowing jargon-heavy scientific concepts, but it takes a certain personality to be able to explain these concepts to laypeople, and make it accessible and easy to understand, AND interesting to listen to. NDT has that personality, watching his videos, watching Cosmos and suchlike, it does what 5 years of secondary-school classes failed to do: It makes me interested in science and want to learn more!

The standup MRI is actually a real thing. In Umea in Sweden they have it to scan the patient in a standing position. For example when the patient has a neckproblem it can sometimes only show when standing.

Been to this theater many times, just across the I-5 from the Univ. of WA. The Friday and Saturday Midnighters are legendary. Film Noir ... to be sure. First place I saw Rocky Horror performed by audience members, complete with props.

I love stand-up comedy, and I think all three of these comedians are funny. They did what they were brought there to do. I'm just baffled as to why they were brought there to do it. Wheaton and Tyson are charming and energetic enough to carry the show. Having Mirman, Tompkins, and Schaal there felt a little bit like having jugglers at a spelling bee.

I have not seen Toy Soldiers, I went to wikipedia and searched the film immediately after the reference at 2:19 or so and now I really want to see that movie. I got the impression that warp drives worked by creating a bubble around the ship which wasn't quite fully connected to the surrounding universe. It created a new frame of reference, one in which the speed of light is not exceeded by the ship, even though the bubble itself (not being matter) is able to exceed the speed of light. Thus the ship effectively moved at many times the speed of light without ever breaking light speed.

One idea that Neil has expressed in multiple interviews over the years is that people have a general interest in science but between schooling, testing, and their everyday lives, their desire and passion to learn gets essentially beaten out of them. Finding new, interesting ways to get people to pay attention and have a discussion/open their minds to science is important, and segments such as this can go a long way towards doing that. Having comedic relief (in my opinion) can also make these ideas more accessible to the common viewer. It is nice to know that you don't have to be a scientist, or even particularly smart in order to have a discussion and start thinking about science. Science doesn't always have to be serious discussion. Perhaps the first step into getting someone interested in science again is to make it fun and accessible. So for all of the people complaining about the comedians on Star Talk, you really need to get over yourselves and just enjoy the show.

The thought that Wil did not finish (I think he was going here) is that the Prime Directive on Star Trek meant you could not go to the past and alter it in such a way that it would change the future (they actually broke this rule all the time). But by existing in our time, Star Trek may have altered the future by presenting inventions that inspired us to invent them, thereby altering the future [cue Twilight Zone music].

8:40 Ho ho hold on a minute! I've got to TOTALLY nerd out here... What Neil, bless his heart, describes is NOT warp drive. No sir-ee bob. What he is describing is technically more of a "jump" than what propels one of our favorite spaceships along through space. When you hear in a sci-fi show that they are performing a hyperspace JUMP, they're doing what Neil is describing. What a warp field does is more akin to squeezing a watermelon seed between your fingers. The engines actually WARP space (and time? help me out here, guys...) around the ship such that it literally squirts it forward very quickly. Which is why they can go faster than light and not reverse age or something like that. They are literally in a bubble of Space/Time scooting along. In a weird way they aren't really even moving. And as warp engines got more powerful (over the series) they began to be able to make that effect larger such that they reached to their destination more quickly. But whatever. There ya go. A "jump" and "warp engines" are not the same. Thank you and good night. :P

Yeeeeaaah and that's what I was saying. Yes, the Spacing Guild in the Dune universe used a form of folding space like Neil described. Just like any other sci-fi story where the travelers "jump" across a gap of folded space, whether it happens instantly or takes a short period of time to do so. And your point is? heh, heh. ;) :P

aerowerks Also, yeah, "warp" is sometimes used synonymously in some sci-fi with "jump". Hence, probably the confusion. But, regardless of what any ooooooother sci-fi stories out there use to get their crews to travel long distances, what Neil described here is NOT how the Enterprise (NX-01,A,B,C,D,E or not bloody any of those letters) travels. :)

Apparently I have to correct what Neil said about traveling across the galaxy. people in Star Trek never traveled across the Galaxy (except by accident - Voyager). Even going across a quadrant of the galaxy needed warp drive in order to not take forever though.

The impression I get was that the whole segment was rushed. There was a strict 30 minuet window and there was just too much to cover. Take away the 3 comedians, (who I though were okay) and you would still have a ton of material with just Wil and Neil. Just too many people on stage for the time allowed.

As I understood the warp field made a space where the speed of light was far greater than it is in normal space. His theory of wormholes was not till DS9. This also explains why some regions of space were damaged by warp fields. Spacetime was warped by the field and did not just "snap back".

I haven't read all of the comments, so forgive me if this was already mentioned by someone else. At 14:20, they start talking about the Holodeck but their first assertion is incorrect. The Holodeck was not an original construct of The Next Generation. It was originally seen in the The Animated Series episode "The Practical Joker" as part of the "Rec Room." Since it was seen on the Enterprise in TAS, it was always there in TOS, it just wasn't shown on screen in any of those episodes as it wasn't directly relevant to any of those stories. According to Wikipedia, "This feature was originally proposed for the original series but was never used." Presumably, it was never used due to budget and/or special effects restrictions.

It's Star Talk...they get somewhat famous comedians and sciencey people to talk science and laugh...that's the premise, get over it. Yes, sometimes the comedians aren't hilarious, again, get over it. It's a great show, but you don't have to watch it if you're just going to complain about it. It's a big KZbin out there, lot's of videos to watch, go watch them if you're going to complain.

I think it's pretty obvious why they invite those comedians. They don't want their audience to consist only of "hardcore science nerds", so they make it more lighthearted and entertaining. And it works... ;)

+novusvoss It more likely has to do with the fact that more people know who various B-level comedians are, like Kristen Schaal due to her numerous Daily Show appearances, than they do A-level popular scientists, like Brian Cox. Who do you think would draw a bigger crowd of viewers on KZbin and in a theater: Amy Schumer or Brian Greene? The answer therein is why they have comedians. Skeptics Guide to the Universe is mostly doctors, IT people, physicists, NASA engineers as guests, etc.; actual professionals in scientific and mathematical fields, and amazingly enough they somehow manage to also be funny while being informative.

At 23:36 I thought of that when I first learned about optic fibers back in the 80's. In the 2000's I've upgraded with a digital camera at one end and digital paper at the other end and the object is between.

Wil is a funny guy, but he also is enough of a science geek that he understands most of what Neil is saying, so he can make relevant jokes. The 3 comedians are like "I know most of those words, but I don't get how they have arranged them."... one of them thought a light year was a measurement of time.
