I first heard Jim playing with Chico Hamilton and the famous chamber group of the mid 50's. His beautiful sound continued to grow over the next 60 years. I last heard him live at the Vanguard with Art Farmer .. I was so fortunate to experience his music. RIP Jim. We also lost Chico and Fred Katz in 2013.

Very true, sometimes I have to remind myself of that when I get so into what I'm playing that I forget how it is actually sounding.

@@davidsheriff9274 Easily done. We all do it. I try as much as possible to not look at my left hand. It’s a good thing to do for various reasons but it also forces you to listen to what you’re doing as opposed to watching.

@@jazzman1954 I saw a Scott Henderson instrumental video and he was taking about this very thing about people getting so into what they are doing that they are not listening to how it is actually sounding, and he said "remember, the sound comes out of your speaker, not your guitar". It's a pretty good thing to keep in mind. By the way, I took a lesson with Jim Hall many years ago and he was just as sweet and gentle a person as you would expect him to be from listening to him play.

@@davidsheriff9274 Doesn’t get much better than Jim Hall. I’ve been listening to Jimmy Raney recently. The album But Beautiful. His tone and phrases are off the scale IMO. It’s perhaps worth mentioning that most upright bass players tend not to look at their hands. Partly because it’s difficult and partly because they have to get the intonation right. You can only do that properly by listening really hard and adjusting.

Jim Hall, what a quiet Giant. In two days I have just leaned that Jim and in months past, George Duke both gone.I would add that Johnny Smith's passing was also very notable and in terms of Jim's legacy, his music was beautiful, eloquent and awakening. He is undoubtedly the Father of Modern Jazz Guitar. Vale Jim Hall.

Been a fan of Jim Hall for many years. Strange to say, it had never dawned on me before how percussive his approach was and how little sustain in his notes. Guess I was always wrapped up in his tone and his improvisations to notice.
