Pat Martino's repeated lick was genius. First off, he played it with great momentum, with ever so slight rhythmic deviations which just kept it moving, even though it was all in one place. It also forced you to hear the other players responding to that, which was very cool. Lastly, it permeated through to the other players, who then utilized that repetition in their own solos (especially DeFranceso). It really opened up the excitement of the entire performance.

In my younger days, although I have always been an appreciator of Scofield, I was a total Martino nut. As such, when I first saw this I felt sorry for Sco having to follow Pat on his signature tune. Naive young man that I was, I concluded that John had been completely smoked..! Looking back on it again, 14 years older (and hopefully a little wiser) I realise the true mastery of both of these great guitarists. The way Sco comes in after Pat's beast of a solo, and tells a completely different and equally compelling story through the tune is incredible. The look on Pat's face during John's solo sys it all, really. To me there are only three categories of musician. This who can tell their own story through the music, those who haven't got there quite yet, and those who haven't yet figured out that's the point.

I had the privilege of visiting the Benedetto guitar factory in 2019. I got to see the entire process of how they made Pat's guitars, and then got to play the same model guitar he's playing here. After playing it for a minute you realize "hey, this is just a guitar" nothing special about it particularly. The magic is all Pat. The guitar is just along for the ride. The person giving me the tour had said Pat was just there 3 weeks ago. He said something like this, "when Pat is in front of you and you are talking, it's a very intense experience. He stares straight into your soul, and takes in every word you say." Pat Martino, thank you for what you've shown me. This video in particular changed the entire course of my life about 4 years ago. I will carry on the pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and perfection that you so effortlessly chased. I will live here and now, just as you did, where reality is most sincere.

No question DeFrancesco crushed it here. That’s what I love about the B3. The masters can create their own unique signature sounds. Then there are God levels like how Hendrix played his guitar, Emerson would play one on each hand, a Bach melody backwards just to show off.
@RozarSmacco2 жыл бұрын
I love Jimi Hendrix’s music but he couldn’t remotely approach the musicianship on display here…it’s actually kind of offensive not unlike the emperor’s new close. What actual solo or song did Jimi even approach “God Mode”? Maybe if you mentioned Holdsworth, Gambale, Art Tatum, Sidney Bechet, or Oscar Peterson…but Jimi Hendrix? No just no. Great tunes but nothing like these guys. You realize that’s Joey Defrancesco on the B3: he’s simultaneously doubly improvising ie walking bass line with the LH and soloing with RH… then Scofield and Pat Martino!! C’mon
