Big Jim was a friend of mine. I loved and admired him and came to know and work with him some the last 5 years of his life. He was such a loving person with a heart as big as Texas. He was exactly what he appeared to be on stage. I miss him dearly and I'm waiting to see him again one day. There was never a better singer or Christian in Southern Gospel music than my hero, Big Jim.

Amazing he had such a strong voice even at his advanced age! He must have been well past 70 or 75 at that time.

He was a great Country Gospel singer, and it is a shame he past... He had great talent as a singer and he funny as all get out.. Truly missed by many in the gospel community.,

Definitely not 'country gospel" but 'southern gospel'. Big Jim was not a country gospel fan and really disliked bluegrass- but he was the quintessential southern gospel lead singer.

@@dmichael100 not true about bluegrass. Jim has said many times that Tim Surrett was his favorite singer. And in the Joyful Noise videos, he puts over his bluegrass styling numerous times.

@@yepyepuhhuhuhhuh3999 Listen, I'm not trying to win an argument here. My source is Mr. Hamill himself backstage before concerts where our regional group used to front for the Kingsmen. He liked Tim as a singer- not necessarily as a bluegrass singer per se. Tim could sing bluegrass, but he wasn't strictly a bluegrass singer. Jim understood why a lot of people liked bluegrass, he said, he just never did.
