Jim is my new hero. Im very new into ham radio and last night just by chance I met up with him on the air (20 m). Jim spent 45 minutes to an hour with me on the air helping me adjust my settings on my FT-710 plus a whole lot of great advice on a number of other radio topics. This guy walks the walk and gives back! Thanks again Jim.

Good to see you both on a stream, there are not huge bragging rights to be had from using decent connectors but bad ones can lead to serious problems. Most importantly it is something we do for recreation and it is supposed to be fun. 73

Hello from Ga Mr Jim. I’m really enjoying the video with Callum. You look like you are feeling better and have more energy so I am hoping you health is getting better. There is so much talk about coax how great it is or lousy it is. I was given a spool of RG 11 and there was easily 700’ left on the spool when it was given to me. I researched the coax but I don’t remember the maker but it came from a guy who installed satellite TV. It is quad shielded and according to the coax calculators I have ran it through it has less loss in 500’ than LMR 400 has in 100’. I built a 1:1 balun and the SWRs on my Hustler 4 btv antenna with 36 radials which are 20 something feet long and the SWRs stayed the same. They did not go up or down when reading the SWRs with my Rig Expert AA350. It is rated for direct burial which I did bury it around 2” in the ground. Why is there not more hams using this type of coax? It’s cheaper I get great signal reports from all over the world. My station is pretty modest with an Icom 7300 LDG pro2 1000 watt antenna turner Ameritron ALS 600 amplifier. With the very low lose coax plus the radials I am supposed to be getting a 2.8 db gain which gives me an ERP of 1100 watts. And what are your thoughts on the ERP of an antenna? I really enjoy watching your videos and I have learned so much from you. Take care and I’m hoping to get you in my logbook and maybe have a good ragchew with you one day. 73.

Hello to my home territory, and thank you for your vids Jim. I dont always agree with you, however I do on this topic. I have had to educate and elmer a couple guys in the importance of quality connectors. coincidentally one ham tried ignoring my advice in the interest of financial choices, and had to purchase a whole lot of connectors all over. He found nearly a 75% loss of signal at VHF through a single connector to his station meters. as soon as the connectors had been replaced, he realized the errors. However many guys are buying there connectors on Amazon, and are not sure of the quality. Even Amphenol is being replicated poorly on Amazon, as I have a bag of them. I have learned my lessons as well, and found I now only deal with the manufacture or trusted suppliers. DXE, or even HRO.

I was given a Kenwood TS-50. Great little rig but this one was hit by lightening and a self proclaimed "technician". Hoping to have it fixed by January 1'st. LOL Thanks to you both. Great information but now I have to tear down and test my premolded jumpers. Even the ones I made myself. One point I heavily agree with. There are many individuals in various disciplines on Social Media platforms who “publish” various bits of information that can be very concerning and could be not just incorrect but also misleading and harmful. So beware with the content you read or view on Social Media. Good advice Jim & Callum.

I have 2 TS-520 Kenwood Trios fully restored, a 401 Yeasu being restored, FT 221 2 meter and a homebrew 6 meter. A restored TS 140 and a IC 718 all hooked to a SDR. I biught the 718 the rest were my late uncles that i have restored and they work like the day they were new. I use 7/8 hard line to a remote antenna switch to lmr 400. Coax is key and a resonate antenna.

Old radios? Those transistor things? I'm on a Collins KWM-2 at home. (Which is a heck of a lot of work in comparison to new radios.) My antennas are marginal at best right now due to space limitations.

Jim why is it that you are not a fan of the EFHW, just curious, considering getting a mono band 40. I have a DX Commander, the best antenna I have had, LOVE IT! Works great and with the HOA, it’s well hidden & camo to go with it. I would add the 40 to the DX, however putting it from my roof to a nearby spruce, I am going to get a lot more height. I am concerned with TV interference and bothering the neighbors. Not sure if that is why you are not a fan of the end feds. Louis WW7GBA

This is ridiculous, a real shame. This is the same bloke that told me he doesn't care about common mode current, in fact, I don't think he knew what it was... and he's an apparent antenna manufacturer. Disappointing.
