Many years ago, I heard a story similar to one in this video from a Hungarian woman who had been a young teenager in Budapest during WWII. She said that her city had been occupied three different times during the war, and that of all the occupiers, the Russians were the worst. I was astonished, and I asked, "Worse than the Nazis?" And she answered, "Much worse than the Nazis. The Russians were barbarians. My sisters and I had to stay hidden in our house to keep from being raped. When we were occupied by the Germans everything was peaceful and orderly. I know the Nazis did terrible things to the Jews, but in regard to everything that I experienced there was normal law and order under German occupation." The quotation I just gave is actually a paraphrase, because this conversation was held many years ago, and obviously I can't remember her exact words. Nevertheless, this was the gist of what she said, and she was very emphatic about it. After the war, during the late 40s and the 50s, she had lived under communist rule in Hungary and was in Budapest when the Russians came back to suppress the Hungarian revolt. After that, she escaped Hungary and came to the United States. She deeply despised the Russian people as a consequence of her experiences.

It was the American led allies that at the end of WW2 agreed Russia should be the „liberators“ of Berlin considering of the many thousands of Soviet deaths suffered. The responsibility of the surrender process in germany was divided up between the Soviets, the French, British and Americans. Germans that experienced that time told me that they were scared stiff of it being the Russians. The stories of their brutality, rapes, pillaging etc had been told ahead of them.
@ohger12 ай бұрын
My dad rolled through Germany in the spring of 1945 with the Third Armored Division, and when German townsfolk saw the U.S. tank columns, they ran from their houses cheering. They were all quite vocal that they were terrified of Russian troops. Now, make no mistake, there were atrocities even from American GIs, but the difference was that if the GI was caught, they would be court martialed and imprisoned whereas the Russians considered rape and pillaging part of their compensation.
@oaktreeman43692 ай бұрын
My father was in the Italian campaign, starting at Taranto in the south, and working their way north. By the end of the war, they had crossed the border into Austria. What the British troops found was that the Russians had already passed through. Everything had been stolen, even the knobs on the doors. And every woman and girl in the country had been raped. This was a revenge thing for the Russians - you humiliate the defeated enemy by humiliating his women. It's a nasty nasty attitude. The British troops, by contrast, behaved themselves - as the Ukrainians are in Kursk right now.

The Golden Horde occupied what we call Russia for about 250-300 years (~1240 to ~1500 AD). Their rule was essentially, do things our way or die. Moskov was an obscure village, founded in 1147 on a river which may or may not have been settled by Vikings in their longships. Moskov enthusiastically adopted the Horde's edict - indeed, what choice did they have? As a reward, the Horde gave Moskov dominion over near-by settlements. But more than that, Moskov adopted the Horde's way of doing things. So began the Russian nation. And to this day, Russians have preserved the Golden Horde's way of doing things. Lest you be confused, that village, Moskov, is known in the English speaking world as Moscow.

Jake, you are 100% correct about the Russian Mongol legacy. Russia is not Europe. In fact, they never went through the European enlightenment. Today's Russia is the predictable result.
@stefansekulic79032 ай бұрын
Russia was founded on the ruins of the Golden Horde, the princes of Moscow were the tax collectors of the Mongols and it's the main reason for the rise of Moskovia in the 1500's.
@AnnaSibirskaja2 ай бұрын
Mongols weren't the first. There were Huns, Avars, Khazars, Bulgars, Kipchaks etc. All of similar to Mongol cultures and masters of those lands. And as for the legacy, it is also the Rus legacy. You remember the Rus, right? Murderous bandits, slavers, mercenaries from the North?
@slawaschwed2 ай бұрын
Nope. Jake is not correct. One should leave history to academic historians, not to amateurs like Putin or some youtubers.

I spent October 2023 in Ukraine. I had a regular taxi driver in Kyiv. He said to me: "Where are all these Nazis? Have you seen any Nazis?" Pause. "Are you a Nazi?" He and many Ukrainians I spoke to are mystified about Putin's motive/s. Several said, when I asked what they would do if all outside aid stopped, "We'll keep fighting. We have been fighting off russia for nearly ten years. This is our land."
@natalieturko48082 ай бұрын
Putin needed an excuse to invade Ukraine, and what better way than invent a Nazi invasion in Ukraine, since the Russians are still living in the 1940's. None of the invaders have seen any Nazis, no Nazi camps, no trains, no complaints from the Jewish population or their Jewish relatives around the world. But the empty-headed population can't use critical thinking.
@stefansekulic79032 ай бұрын
Russian narratives about "Nazis" and NATO expansion are just futile attempts to justify a war of conquest. The thing is there are many in the West who have fallen for these narratives as certain channels and individuals spread false information on purpose. This is most prevalent in the US, where a bunch of right wing channels and "conservatives" are repeating these talking points without any evidence.

And now they have more chance because they have people in many countries willing to fund them, regardless of the cowardly politicians. That's a better position than 10 years ago.
@JamesStreet-tp1vb2 ай бұрын
This Nazi 🐎💩 by Pooty is just an excuse. His own Wagner Group is named after Hitlers favorite composer. One of Wagners founders, Dimitri Utkin was an admirer of the Third Reich and named this paramilitary group accordingly. Many people don't seem to know that. When Pooty downed Prigozins plane, he finally killed a Nazi because Utkin was also on board.

Remember that Ukraine is like the UK, with a climate less extreme than their neighbours and good soil for agriculture, mineral wealth like Coal and Iron Ore, Salt mines, oil and gas, a large coastline (including Crimea), with good ports. and a large population density of poets and musicians, great engineers and innovators, used to fighting off foreign invaders, and not easily oppressed. That Zelenskiy can be compared to Churchill is no mistake.
@dirkhouben99602 ай бұрын
Remember that in the UK, Scotland and (for instance) England are two different peoples. Similar to the West Ukrainians and the Donbass Ukrainians. Crimea is even a completely different story. Portraying them as one great nation is distorting the historic truth. And by the way, Churchill was a leader, Zelensky is a beggar, there is no comparison.
@stevebeer33242 ай бұрын
@@dirkhouben9960 And yet the Crimean Tartars voted to be a part of Ukraine, ; as did the people of Kherson, and the Donbas when not occupied by torturers and killers (the Russian army, in case you are confused) A nation is made up of many tribes, many origins,, we apparently mostly originated in Africa. Fact- Ukraine a sovereign nation did not ask to be invaded., and its cities of the "rescued by the Russians" by being bombed to oblivion .Fotunately the English feel no compunction to bomb Glasgow or torture the residents of Aberdeen at the moment, and the Scots aren't sending missiles to London. Cant help thinking your parallels go off at a bit of a tangent. Zelensky is a genuine hero. Britain relied heavily on America during WW2, as did the Soviets Its the Russians who are now the barbarians at the gate...............
@dirkhouben99602 ай бұрын
@@stevebeer3324 No, the Ukrainian people did not ask to be invaded, the US took care of that, with the help of its eternal poodle, the UK.. Please make a distinction between the UA government (Your hero Zelensky), the UA people of West UA and the people of East UA and things will appear more clearly. If you wish not to do so, fine, live in your supremacist dream world that Russians are barbarians and the US is the saviour of our planet....get real man.
