It’s wild that Steve Whitmire got fired for “portraying Kermit as a miserable victim”. Kermit has never been mean or truly depressed, but even with Jim, in every interview he’s struggling with something. This never came off as him being some kind of victim, it humanized him and made him feel like a real person with problems and a life outside of the muppets. It was truly something else, and I hate that he’s become what he is now.

Henson caught the flu en route to L.A. for this taping. But he because he grew up Christian Scientist, he was reluctant to get it treated and refused over the counter medicine. About a week later, during a hectic flight and work schedule, the Flu progressed into Walking Pneumonia, but again, Jim was reluctant to go to the Hospital so it worsened due to overwork. It wasn't until May 15,1990 when he finally agreed to go to the Hospital, but it was too late. The Pneumonia had spread infection to his organs, Doctors tried to save him, but didn't administer Detox and instead used Antibotics, which allowed the body to produce natural anti body toxins which shut his body down. He lapsed into a Coma, and died. On The Early Morning Hours of Wednesday May 16,1990 in NYC.

The most interesting thing I find about this is that it was supposed to be the lead in to The Muppets moving to Disney (which was a Henson goal, he was already thinking about making sure the Muppets out lived him at that point). This interview was on the evening of Friday, May 4, 1990 in Los Angeles. Eleven days and a few hours alter, Jim Henson was dead of pneumonic streptococcus A bacteria infection. At the time of this interview, Henson had strep throat, but did not have the bacterial infection. This infection occurred at some time on May 11 or early May 12, and some believe that Henson was weakened by strep throat and overwork, and this made him more vulnerable to the infection. This and the fact that Henson did not finally seek medical help until the morning of May 15 led to his death at 1:21 a.m. EST on May 16. By the time he agreed to go to the hospital, it was too late for doctors to save him. How and why Henson acquired the streptococcus A bacteria is a mystery to this day. This May 4 performance by Henson is lackluster and not all that funny; Kevin Clash is the one who carries this interview. Henson's performance is clearly off, as is his voice, no doubt because he was not feeling well. It is sad and painful to watch this interview, knowing what Jim Henson would face in the next eleven days.

Instead of doing this interview, he should have been at home resting. His immune system was in no shape to fight the infection he got because he never stopped. He constantly pushed himself even when he was sick. It is apparent that he had no idea how sick he was. As soon as he started feeling ill he should have stopped whatever he was working on and gave himself time to rest and heal. He could have beaten his illness if his body was not so weakened by stress and overwork. Even when he was coughing up blood near the end he refused to go to the hospital. It was only when the pain became too strong to ignore he finally gave in and sought medical treatment. It was sadly too late. Serious infections require immediate medical attention. I don't know how long he had the infection but at some point, he should have realized it was getting worse, not better. Henson's death is tragic because it could have been avoided.

@@kylemorello4787 Yep. If Elmo and Baby Dinosaur can be breakout hits, why can’t Clifford?

We lost Jim far too soon. Jim and The Muppets, and Sesame Street, along with George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, shaped my childhood, and of course millions of others. We miss you Jim. Clifford was fantastic. I watched Arsenio religiously too as a teen on my little 13" TV in my bedroom. I'd stay awake too late every night, tired for school the next day, because I couldn't miss Arsenio.

+sliat1981 This was from 1990, so it could have been his last! :S

This was aired 12 days before he died, so this is most likely his last.

his very last was the day he died iirc, it was a tribute to joe raposo, the guy who wrote a lot of the sesame street songs including "Sing"
