I’m English. For the last part of my PhD, I studied in the USA. I was head-hunted and offered a job in the State department of a western State. Even so, it cost me around $6,000 for my documentation and a similar amount was spent by my employer. I paid for my own healthcare while studying and have never, ever claimed any benefit in over 20 years. Do you think that if I ask, I could get my $6,000 back? 😂 There people are paying for nothing and they even get legal assistance for free. Until all of my studies were finished and I was given permission to work, I took on two jobs as a waitress, legally. Actually I loved those jobs, they allowed me to meet lots of Americans and get to know their customs and thinking patterns however, today’s border crossers are paid good money to sit in air conditioned or heated rooms. Not going to lie, it makes me a tad angry when I think about how pushed I was to get everything done. Feels like I (and many others) was punished for doing the right thing.
