At this point Jim was basically just fitting his guitar into the songs anywhere he could. As the bands sound got fuller there was less room for his instrument. It makes sense that he moved on. He seems pretty freaking depressed and beaten down at this point. Kudos to him for calmly answering the most cliche questions a music journalist could possibly ask.

I don't get what he was disillusioned about, they were heavy enough on King For a Day and there are tracks on Angel Dust he had nothing to do with writing that are among the heaviest and best songs they've done (Malpractice, Caffeine). I get the impression he sort of just wants everything to sound rooted in Sabbath and they got a little too eclectic for him maybe, but Angel Dust is still a fine metal album.
@clavius81823 жыл бұрын
@@TheGreatGodPan - Things were pretty cloudy at the time, but you could tell what was going on at the time from little pieces of information that came out. Notice here how he names all the guys together... and then mentions Mike Patton. Patton was a big personality and he changed the dynamic of the band. Jim wasn't afraid of being eclectic, he actually says that here. But the band changed, and Jim didn't. I get the feeling that he thought things had become "The Mike Patton Show", and he wasn't totally wrong. I'm not dissing Mike Patton. I've still got my Mr Bungle gig shirt from 1997. @@TheGreatGodPan Angel Dust was kind of light, guitar wise. Now if you'd made 3 albums before that where the guitar featured pretty prominently, and suddenly it's barely used, it would annoy any guitar player. Then you recruit a new singer who's got a massive ego, and was probably pretty intense and dominant, well maybe he thought "time to go". As for King for a Day, I think FNM recorded that and made it guitar prominent to further p1ss of Jim after he'd left probably. I don't know, but I felt a bit sorry for the guy.

I remember seeing parts of this on MTV at the time, mainly the part where Jim talked about not having any idea where his guitar was supposed to go in the songs, and I always thought of it once I heard Jim left the band. It was many years before I could go back and listen to let alone appreciate the post-Jim FNM stuff, eventually I did, but his loss was very hard felt and they were not the same band afterwards, as much as I love Mike Patton and his singular genius - Jim's guitar sound made the band as much as anything.

But in the other side is Jim, the most "metal" guy in the band, and I always love the electric guitar more than another instrument, I always focused more on the guitar than another instrument, and I love metal more than any other genre in music, but Jim recently loss his father at that time and he doesn't agree totally with the musical orientation of the album, he looks sad, I guess he felt lost, confused, surely was a hard time for him and he want to compose more in studio, but Bill don't.... he simply doesn't fit...

One of The reasons why he had such a difficult time with the album is basically because Billy n Mike Bordin are essentially the main brains of the band. Not to discredit Patton Roddy n Jim in any way but seriously dig up those old interviews with the band. Bordin n Billy were practically in sync with where they wanted to take the bands sound to next with angel dust and while Patton n Roddy were down with it Jim had the biggest issue cuz the sound was moving away from that Thrash aspect they had on their previous albums. Jims main influences are Thrash and Classic Heavy Metal so by leaving him songs where he had to fit his personal sound/taste with his own influences came to be more than a challenge because of the direction Bordin n Billy wanted to take with it. I find the album fantastic but compare the guitar sounds on Angel Dust to The Real Thing and youll see what i mean. Sure some songs on angel dust have a very heavy sound from Jim like on Smaller and Smaller and J***lobber but its definitely fewer than as TRT as Angel Dust was embracing that more alternative Mr. Bungle sound with it’s music as opposed to its RAWer punchier TRT sound. Its so upsetting he left the band after this but I genuinely believe he went out with a bang. I mean especially on J***lobber i mean cmon that closing riff tells you all you need to know.
