@@lekrieg8618 absolutely. Moriarty was in it for the chess match. And unlike Sherlock, he doesn't have any boundaries. Sherlock's definition of "winning" the match include him and all of his friends being alive at the end. Moriarty has no such boundaries. Even if he is not alive to see the win, he still sees it as victory over his opponent. Those are the scariest people. The ones who have no fear.
@lekrieg8618 Жыл бұрын
@@TonyPerez816 yeah. he also wanted Sherlock to understand that "he has won". If the ONLY person who can call off the hits was him, simply remove him from the board and he won. His ONLY mistake was him underestimating those Sherlock surrounds himself with. Thats the irony, thats the Big Flaw in Moriarty, he is so superior he doesnt imagine that anyone else can influence his plan while, ultimately, his big finale was unraveled by those he deemed "unworthy". I'm not sure if you have watched season 4 yet but if you didn't and don't want to know spoilers, don't keep reading... Unfortunately he did actually die here. In seasons 3 and 4 he only appears in dreams, flashbacks and pre-recorded messages. I mean, he has made some plans and is still terrorizing Sherlock from his grave but I'd prefer it if he was physically alive.
@TheFeuergirly7 жыл бұрын
Confused Panda I think he just didn't really see the value of life, which could be one of the reasons why it was so easy for him to kill people. He was a psychopath who couldn't feel sympathy for other people but there are lots of psychopaths out there who don't commit so many gruesome crimes. I think the worst thing was that he was so extremely intelligent. He grew up realizing that he was different, that nobody could understand him. Neither of us can comprehend how terrifying that must be, Jim lived, as Mycroft once said "in a world of goldfish".No wonder he doesn't care about the lives of others, to him these ordinary people are no better than small, stupid animals. They can be fun to play with sometimes but at the end of the day they can't fulfill your desire for real company, for people you can talk to and who understand you. That is why he was so interested in Sherlock. After 30 years of living alone surrounded by goldfish, he finally finds another human being and gets excited. To test if Sherlock really is his equal or just another ordinary person, he plays some games with him, although Sherlock doesn't find them that funny. See, Sherlock could have ended up just like Moriarty if he hadn't grown up with a pretty smart mother and a genius brother. Because they showed young Sherlock that although he was smarter than most people, the other people were still humans, just a bit less intelligent and killing them is wrong. Jim never learned that, he never understood the meaning of life and spent all his years trying to distract himself. But when he met Sherlock he gained hope that he was not completely alone and so his goal became to together with Sherlock solve the final problem: Staying alive. Because that's all life was to him, a problem. This world didn't matter, all the ordinary people didn't matter, only he and Sherlock did. From Jim's point of view there was no reason for him and Sherlock to stay alive in this awful, boring world and all he wanted was to leave it and experience new things. He knew everything about life and it bored him, he was simply curious to see what death was like. At the beginning of the rooftop scene, Moriarty is frustrated and sad that it was so easy to defeat Sherlock. At no point can you see him being happy about winning, like other villains, no he had hoped that Sherlock would win, that he would prove himself Jim's equal. In this video you can see how happy Moriarty is when he realizes that Sherlock isn't ordinary. He is relieved and knows now that he is not alone. He knows that he can leave this terribly boring world and after a bit of waiting, someone like him will follow. And in this case, Sherlock would maybe even die directly after him so that Jim wouldn't need to wait that long. We know now that Sherlock doesn't die here but someday he will and then Moriarty can spend eternity with him in the afterlife, away from all the stupid people. Sherlock even promised Jim that he would shake hands with him in hell. So, I guess that's why he killed himself. I and many other fans may wish that he was still alive but if you really think about it, this is the best thing that could have happened to Jim. Dying right next to the only person in the world that mattered to him, knowing he would finally not be lonely anymore. Moriarty simply did not belong on this world. (Sorry for this long rant, it's just that I had asked myself the same question many times and finally wanted to write all my thoughts down. I still want Moriarty back. If I can't have him alive, atleast give me some more dreams or flashbacks or a twin brother! There can never be enough Andrew Scott xD)

We don't know when exactly the meeting between Moriarty and Euros took place because we don't know the total timespan of the whole series but I personally think it happened at the time of the second season, somewhere between the Hounds of Baskerville episode and the Reichenbach Fall. Because when Moriarty talks to Mycroft in The Final Problem, he first asks him if he is under arrest again, which means that this scene happened after the Hounds of Baskerville because that was the episode where Mycroft was interrogating him. And we know it has to be before the Reichenbach Fall because after that he is, well, dead. So, I don't think Euros was controlling Moriarty, since he only met her 1-2 years after Sherlock, I think it was maybe even the other way round. She was a genius as well and I do think that she made all the plans herself but she was unknowingly influenced by Moriarty. In the scene where Sherlock has to choose between shooting either John or Mycroft and Sherlock then points the gun at Mycroft, Euros says that Moriarty had already predicted that and shows a clip of him saying: "End of the Line. Holmes killing Holmes." Everyone, Euros included, believed that meant that Sherlock would kill his brother, only Sherlock understood the true meaning of that message, namely that Moriarty just told Sherlock to kill himself. Which is exactly what Jim wanted and what Sherlock then tried to do. Nearly everyone says that Euros is the smartest character in the show but the fact that Moriarty was able to practically destroy her entire plan like that without her realizing shows that he is even cleverer than her, or at least he knows her little brother better than she does. In addition to that we find out at the end that Euros is the young girl in the plane who is afraid of the world around her. And who is the person that calls her and causes her to cry and beg? It's Moriarty. He has such a big influence on her even five years after they met that his voice causes her to have a mental breakdown and become terrified in form of this little girl. It's like he was the only one who looked through her tough and evil "I'm too clever" attitude and saw that she was just a weak, broken child underneath. And he used that to his advantage. He used her as a back-up plan to kill Sherlock, if he himself failed. Moriarty manipulated Euros and managed to make such a big impact on her in only five minutes that he would still be the embodiment of threat in her future dreams. But I agree that Jim is in love with Sherlock, being united with him in death is all he ever wanted. I think Sherlock also has some form of love for him or he at least loves having such a great opponent. And the whole Special Episode which all took place in Sherlock's head pretty much showed how obsessed he is with Moriarty and that he just can't get over him. You could even interpret the 4x02 scene where he tells Euros "Your life is not your own, keep your hands off it" as a way of mourning Moriarty who killed himself. At the end of the day it's up to everyone to decide for themselves what kind of relationship Sherlock and Moriarty have. To me it's like a love-hate relationship. They can't live together but they can't live happily without each other either.

Did you even undrestand any of this? Sherlock was defeated? This is exactly the opposite. How dumb are you? Let me explain. Moriarty let slip that killers can be called off when he said ' they'll kill ur friends UNLESS you jump off from this roof' . It wasn't a solid decision. Moriarty could call them off if sherlock jumped . But moriarty had to be alive to do that. He thought the only way to do that was to kill himself preventing sherlock using him to free his friends. So sherlock would have no choice but to jump , making moriarty win even if he died. BUT sherlock found a way around. He anticipated something inevitable and planned ahead to fake his death. He survived and all his friends were okay. Moriarty lost. Sherlock won .

Sherlock looks down at Moriarty's hand a bit confused at 1:04. In an earlier scene, Jim was shown to be left-handed. Because he was drinking tea with his left hand. And Jim reaches to shake Sherlock's hand with his right hand. So Sherlock was a bit puzzled when they shook hands
@theawless3 жыл бұрын
That might not really be the case. A lot of left handed people are accustomed to greeting with right. Sherlock would've known this fact.
@ollyeatough38852 жыл бұрын
People shake with their right hand because most people are right handed and in medieval times you would draw your sword from your left side using your right hand. To shake someone's hand with your right hand shows that you offer them no harm since if you are shaking their hand then you obviously aren't carrying a sword. So Moriarty shaking Sherlock's hand with their right hand is just a polite gesture. The only reason Sherlock is confused by this is because he's being a total weirdo...

When Moriarty realised there really is another man like him, he fulfilled his life's purpose and could die happy. Of course, winning was important too, so he did- at least until Sherlock somehow survived.

I feel like this dialogue is incomplete... Moriarty is saying that no matter what happens, Mycroft and his men won't get him to talk. Sherlock counters that HE can get him talk, because - being just like Moriarty - will literally be willing to go to any lengths to get the answer out of him... BUT...there's a few things wrong with that... 1; the gunmen are setting up to take aim NOW, waiting to get confirmation on whether or not Sherlock falls...How does Sherlock expect to torture Moriarty to procure the answer before they shoot? How long would they wait before shooting? 2; I know that Sherlock said he'd be willing to do "anything" to get Moriarty to talk...but what does that entail. Considering that the man is so committed to winning this game, what threat could Sherlock POSSIBLY make to him that would get him to talk? This Moriarty doesn't even care about his own life; he doesn't care about pain, he doesn't care about money. I think the only thing he does care about is Boredom, and that just leads him back to NOT caring about his life... So I ask again...What was Sherlock prepared to do? What was on Sherlock's mind? What did he make Moriarty think he was going to do to him? Unless...Is it trying to say that because Sherlock is clever, that by simply talking to him, he might get him to accidentally divulge the method to calling off the hit? Because I think Moriarty's too clever to fall for that...
@Bahzelx3 жыл бұрын
to be fair, Sherlock didn´t know the length Moriarty was ready to go to win against him. Moriarty was as intelligent as he was rutheless, but Pain will break any person. Also Sherlock wasn´t afraid to get his hands dirty, seeing what he did to the Assasin that hurt Mrs. Hudson. So maybe he thought pulling some Nails etc. woud get him to comply. He didn´t know Moriarty was "suicidal" and ready to kill himself.
@3hutp3 жыл бұрын
FINALLY! Thank god there's one person here that uses his mind. Everyone is so taken aback by the fantastic acting and whatnot but noone really thinks about this nonsense dialogue. I said the same thing in another comment. Sherlock's threat made no sense at all. Moriarty was right the first time, all he did was he talked big. This guy was tortured by Sherlock's brother for weeks and didn't break, now he thinks he can overpower him? On the rooftop? How? It's bad writing. I'd love to see a HISHE episode of this where Moriarty doesn't shoot himself and says 'Okay, I'll call you on your bluff. Let's see what devilish deeds you have in mind for me. You have 5 minutes before the hitmen kill your loved ones and I have a gun. Good luck getting me to call them off!'
@astro_penguin_6 ай бұрын
The answer lies in Moriarty's line... "You're me." Sherlock isn't threatening torture. Rather, he is implying that he and Moriarty have a connection unlike any other. A greater understanding than even Sherlock and John have (I would argue). They need each other, and they know each other well enough to predict the other's actions (to an extent) and plan for them. They are equals. Mycroft doesn't understand Moriarty quite like Sherlock does. It almost seems as if they can read each other's mind at times. Knowing this, it's reasonable to accept that Sherlock would be able to deduce how to call off the killers. Keep in mind that Sherlock is good at this sort of thing. Remember Irene Adler and Major Barrymore?
@GanonGhidorah4 ай бұрын
@@astro_penguin_ Unfortunately, the episode demonstrates that this isn't the case. I'm not sure how anyone can claim these two are equals or that Sherlock is able to predict what Moriarty is going to do, when the episode went out of its way to put Sherlock in an unwinnable scenario, in which he fell for every one of Moriarty's moves. Seems a bit frustrating because when you get down to it, it makes Moriarty come off as superior to him in almost every way.

Moriarty didn't die didn't you hear the spray just before the shot? Thats the exact same spray he used to incapacitate the guard when he stole the crown jewels. The shot came AFTER the spray the blood could easily be produced from a sac at his neck. Plus Sherlock didnt check the body he instantly set his plan into action. But this is just my theory

Sherlock: Got a new Cluedo game. Watson: I said it before, we're not having that argument. Sherlock: You're going to love this. It's Sherlock edition. Watson: Oh really? And who is the murdered victim? Sherlock: Why it's Moriarty.
@mitromney Жыл бұрын
The problem with Sherlock was that it ended too late. Just look at what Sherlock has become, it's not a classic, it's the one show that was a thing a few years back, nobody even remembers it... And the reason is this - THIS was the finale that we needed... The whole "sister that can program brains of others" was straight out of a poor sci-fi, it was simply not a good finale. She was a horrible villain both on paper and in execution. Moriarty was Sherlock's main villain, teased since season 1. The show should've ended soon after his death, introducing a whole new villain unknown to the books OR the script of the show thus far and giving her literal super powers so that she could somehow be more intimidating than Moriarty and others was just cheap and disappointing.

Jim Killed Himself so that Sherlock didn't have a way out but to jump that's why Jim did it.
I remember watching this when it came out. Still one of the most impactful scenes in my memory, and in retrospect, Moriarty is a fantastic example of an over-the-top villain who uses very real manipulation to traumatize people.

Does anyone else notice how Moriarty is the only character that Steven Moffat has actually killed off (well ok, he killed off Mary, but he went out of his way to ensure that she essentially came back to life as John's conscience in the next episode). I'd have been happy for DW characters like Clara and Bill to just stay dead , but I so wanted to see Moriarty return after all that setup in S4.
