This MX-14S is a very interesting SSB transceiver. It began its production in Japan in the early 80s. It cover the 20m band in two segments. It has attenuator and CW capabilities in fact It incorporates a button that acts as a key. Delivering 2W PEP, it makes a real challenge to get contacts with its whip antenna. However it is more than capable. I had more luck using a random wire antenna with a 9.1 UNUN. I found difficult calling out as I don’t really know on which frequency I was transmitting on. I did find useful to tune known calls and answer back. The RIT is only for TX. IT makes it easier to tune voices, but then you won’t be be transmitting on that frequency.
Its audio is really warm and nice, I found it really nice to operate it despite the tricky VFO part that would really need a vernier type reduction.
I hope you enjoyed the video. If so please like and subscribe.

Wow ! This is an absolute rarity. They are very expensive when one appears on ebay. It has always been my dream to have one! Very nice to see a demo of it.

They are very sturdy and robust. If hou find one they are very reliable. The 21MHz is the most likely to be found. But the 80 and 40m versions are pretty rare. They are usually in Japan so you have to pay custom fees too 😅 thank you for yhr visit

I recognize that JIM logo. I knew a radio engineer called Jim who lived in Southampton Hampshire UK in the 80's along with his lovely Japanese wife. They'd travel to Tokyo and bring back all kinds of cool radio technology and impressive radio magazines. Jim designed a popular scanner antenna pre-amp that sold very well and has the same JIM logo on the case. Having a Japanese wife allowed him to make relationships with Japanese companies and component suppliers. They were a lovely couple and I wonder what happened to them.
