When I was little my dad (who was a 30 year marine) used to love to watch Gomer Pyle. He would laugh which was notable because he was always a serious man. I used to run around the house screaming "Citizen Arrest, Citizen Arrest" which drove my mom crazy. Thank god for reruns of The Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. which I still enjoy today.

What a great human being. People have no idea how much of his time and money that he donated back to different communities. That's because Jim gave without making a production out of it. I grew up in the late 50s and the 60s; during a time when social views were very different than the world we now live in. The world would be a much better place if we all treated others with the respect and kindness that he showed.
@ronaldmayle18234 жыл бұрын
I grew up in the 60s, too. The riots, Vietnam war, blacks riding on the back of buses and assassinations of JFK and others. Where is the respect and kindness you are talking about?
@thinkcivil16274 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldmayle1823 I grew up in a small town (3,000 people). No one locked their doors and neighbors watched over each other. I have good memories of growing up in that atmosphere. Today, I live in a large city and when I go back to my home town, it is a different atmosphere and is much different. The growing up in a small town are the memories I was talking about. Yes, all of those things you mentioned happened and it's a sad chapter in history. But, why stop there? Go back a little further to Korea, WWII, the Great Depression, WWI, the Civil War, slavery, displacement of Native Americans, the fight to become independent as a country, etc. Society is constantly changing and the hope is that we learn from it and grow. You have 2 choices: Learn from it and become a better person (which means you can still find joy in life and good memories), or you can stay angry about the ugly things that happened throughout history. People who stay in the injustices of the past, instead of seeing progress in society, will remain angry and not allow the nation to learn and heal. We've elected a black president, along with other strides in the right direction in society. You can help educate people, or you can stay bitter. It's your choice. As Dr Martin Luther King Jr said: "Anger only tears down and destroys".
@ronaldmayle18234 жыл бұрын
@@thinkcivil1627 I agree, but so many people have a romanticized memory of the past. Today, we have 24 hours 7 days a week of news so the networks and cable have to invent "news." Now it seems like more is happening then long ago when we only had news once a day. I served in the military in the 60s, and I saw hate first hand. People are the same in every generation. The good and the bad, and there are a lot more good people in this world than bad. We just notice the bad more.
@thinkcivil16274 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldmayle1823 I agree. Back when we were kids, there were 3 TV networks and the news was professionally broadcast as it happened and without an agenda. Now, there are so many channels and the news is 24/7, with a format that is more like a political talk show. The news has become so sensationalized and biased (both ways) that I stopped watching all network television. Nice talking to you. Take care.

She was also probably one of the biggest homophobes that ever lived. I used to chuckle to myself knowing that one day she learn the truth about that. I already knew before the general public knew, because I had a gay friend who knew them. She never would talk about either of them after it all came out. If one of them came up for some reason, like: "Oh, look Pillow Talk is playing on channel 4, wow." She say: "Well . . . ." That is all she ever said about either of them again. I kind of felt sorry for her, because she had such a crush on Rock her whole life, but thought Jim was the kind of guy that a gal should marry. Lol.

Okay! This probably is going to seem unbelievable, but the first time I heard and seen Gomer Pyle I knew that I had to try his voice! And so I practiced and everyone wanted to hear my impersonation of Gomer! Plus, I also inpersonated, Truman Copodity, Lily Tomilin, Ruth Buzz, and Gilda Radner. I was a young teen and enjoyed entertaining my school friends, my parents friends! It was fun laughing! I finally grew up, and probably Gomer is the only one I could try out now. I prefer not to but when our family discovered he could sing we were hooked on this guy!

I remember seeing his nightclub act back in the early 80's. Those days many acts were racy, or downright indecent. I was at the late seating and prepared for "adult" entertainment. But you are right, Steve. Jim was a very decent man, and I enjoyed tremendously a wonderful evening of good, clean entertainment. Jim kept us laughing with his stories and humor, and of course no one could quite match that beautiful baritone singing voice of his! Not trying to be a buzzkill on the story of Jim, but the stand out amazing man that he was and his beautiful soul would be upset now as details come out about Matt Lauer. In modern retrospect with what has now been exposed about M.T., Jim would be disgusted by having him as an NBC host of television covering and producing a documentary about him. Jim was the sweetest and most sincere of any of us. Jim was a true shining star within the darkness void. God freakin' bless you Jim!!!!!! You were the best out of the rest of us!!! As a guiding light, I hold still in my heart you can be a light to guide the rest of us to what is the so called "promise land". Especially with being gay and not ashamed when you opened up and giving the people your truth of protecting any one and everyone no matter of sexual preference, you are a true hero. I am a straight male, but love and respect the laughter and love that you brought all of our thoughts and communities together. We all will forever miss his comedy and honesty for he loved us all. I only wish Jim you could see my comment and feel my feelings of heart and soul. When Jim passed, we lost a truly bright shining star who could and would be able to be a voice in his life to unite us all.
