I met him twice at conventions, and the 2nd time I was at his table something past 3 hours. I enjoyed listening to him talk. Nobody else came his his table the entire time I was there to get stuff signed by him. Might have spent $300 on signatures, but it was well spent because I didn't want to waste his time without paying for something.

Agreed. I also believe that the New Universe stuff is criminally underrated. The writing quality was head and shoulders above any mainline marvel book at the time. I think that mainline writers not on board with it opposed it so much due to it clearly out shining even spiderman and xmen at the time, and il argue that all day. Art wasnt the best, except for starbrand, that didnt help but the writing, top notch around the board and new u is still something i re read from top to bottom atleast once a year, i gotta start this years read soon, maybe after i get done here complimenting shooter while also e-slapping him for being such an unlikeable person. What he did for valiant was also ground breaking, shooter valiant books were also head and shoulders about dc and marvel writing wise at the time. Ive read Erik Larsen call those books "wretched" and him call the art horrible which is ironic since Larsens art is incredibly loose, sloppy and often not pleasing to the eye (i am a fan though, mainly savage dragon but his art isnt good enough to go around trashing others). I see why people hated shooter tho, hes not a pleasent man to be around even in an interview i want to ask him why hes so miserable sounding. Book wise tho, everything he touched turned to gold, in my opinion. He had an uncanny ability to keep entire lines of books tight knit, to a fault even, i can see why some would be turned off a bit creative wise. Thats enough shooter love and e-slapping for the night. I agree, hes a legend with an asshole tendency but i love him.... I always wished that DC got him to re-launch and EIC for a few years to get it in order.

Guys, for a lot of time periods in my 40 1/2 years on earth, Marvel Comics was the most important thing in my life. I really can‘t thank you and Jim Shooter enough for doin‘ this interview (and also thank every other artist in your other interviews for sittin‘ down and spendin‘ time for an interview). Thank heavens Jim S. is fit, has a excellent memory and is not afraid to talk straight. Talkin‘ straight don‘t makes you the most sympathic person on earth, because a lot of people don‘t like straight talk or hearin‘ the truth, but I‘m all in for that. So Jim‘s my main. And as much as I like Doug Moench as a creator I can‘t understand him when he says he hates Jim Shooter. Very sad.

The Hank Pym / Wasp treatment was excellent story-writing in my opinion. Felt very realistic, and similar to so many real life situations. Loved how it was done. The lawyer has a bit of a "white knight" mindset.

The Shooter era at Marvel was superb. Outside of the Lee/Kirby/Ditko era in the 60's and early 70's, it is, IMO, Marvel's best era. My favorite comics and creators of all time came out of this period. Marvel has not duplicated the greatness of this since, IMO. Shooter did a lot right for this to be the case. I wasn't there, and don't know the man personally, though I have met him a few times at cons over the decades, but, I must say, it takes balls to sit for an 8 hour interview and answer questions as truthfully as Shooter does here. My hat's off to him. I appreciate the fun he brought to my high school years during his tenure at Marvel.

Watching more of this today and you hear so often about the horrors of Shooter yet every interview I see he's forthcoming, never dodges an issue (no pun) and keeps his stories straight. This has led me to believe most of the hate just comes down to the fact that he was the boss, everyone has an issue with the boss no matter the industry. Professional decisions cant help but feel personal especially when dealing with creatives. The results, the output speaks for itself. Also, the Grammercy Hotel😂 Also (Also) Shooters idea about the concept of truth being in the middle as a victory for the wrong side is a legit revelation to me.

Man! What a nice thing to hear all these interviews, thanks a lot guys. It brings me back to my childhood, while I was deeply enjoying those comics and these guys were having lots of stress to make a buck and make the company very rich. Amazing how writers and artists had a hard time trying to be on top of the game, dealing with editors, publishers, dead lines and such. How much money these company used to do or even still do nowadays. So much arguments, stress, hate, ego, misunderstanding , lost of friendship... The way I see, Jim Shooter were doing the best he could to please everyone, unfortunately it's impossible. And on top of that keep the company on high level, and ended up being screwed over from top asses. In the end nothing matters but f..ng money. I look back and compare old arts and nowadays and see that back in time there was so much details and passion for the art, and many delivered on time. Nowadays there's so much bad art, very low rendering, bad anatomy and so on and they still run out of deadline. I have a hard time to pick up a comics today and be impresssed with art, and besides that you have also a hard time to follow story telling. Layout of panels are so random that you don't know where to start or end a single page. And to mess things up, where have woke damn comics coming out. Sigh! How I miss the old times.

Wow, I don't know what's crazier-that you guys conducted a nearly 8 hour interview or that I sat through it lol. Seriously, great job. I was in college and a devoted reader of the Comics Journal back in the early '80s, so I remember many of the controversies about Shooter. Even then, not being on the inside and having no real personal investment, I always took everything with a grain of salt, simply finding all the reporting about it to be entertaining drama. I give you credit for bringing up difficult issues and trying to see if he had any regrets or at least felt that the other side, even in retrospect, had valid concerns, but Shooter never seemed to "take the bait" (for lack of a better term). I guess he has to be able to sleep at night. But he acquits himself well in the interview, and certainly tells some fascinating behind the scenes stories, particularly in explaining his side of the many controversies he was involved with. At the end of the day, given his position, I'm sure it's impossible to make decisions that will please everyone. But one also has to wonder how he managed to seemingly make so many enemies and achieve such notoriety, compared to some other people in the industry who served in similar roles-he's fairly unique in that regard, so many bridges seem to have been burned. A common problem he seemed to encounter was having to deal with, and being beholden to, people/owners/bosses who really didn't understand or care for comics, and who wanted to sell, make a profit and exit as soon as they could, versus try to build a business/legacy of long-lasting IP.

Mr. Shooter is a class act. Professional, knows his stuff.. and well .. and better than most .. a genuine leader who knows what it means and has the backbone to do it and I'm very grateful I was all in buying comic books during his time of leadership and creativity at Marvel. The only letter I ever had published in a comic book was in The Avengers #174 voicing how happy I was that he was the one crafting the stories because I knew how good he was - one among a few - at crafting stories for so many characters and making it work, and work really well. X-Men #137. Me and a buddy, teenagers at the time, had just bought our copies at the local news stand, along with our weekly haul, and had sat down across from each other at the back of the bus taking us home. 137 was the first thing each of us pulled out of our bags and began to read. After a few minutes I happened to look over at my buddy ( his favorite team was The X-Men and his favorite characters were - and still are - Scott and Jean ) and noticed he was just holding his issue still - open, not turning a page - and staring at it - and then I saw a single tear drop out of his eye and run down his cheek. I knew then that Jean was dead. I just knew. I closed my issue and put it back in the bag and we sat in silence the rest of the trip home. Listening to Mr. Shooter talk about the many details of his time at Marvel makes me even more thankful I was able to enjoy so many great comic books he was responsible for. Nothing can ever take that away from me. Things, as many know, aren't all that great these days at Marvel, and haven't been for a long time, but Mr. Shooter's time running Marvel gives me hope that regardless of how bad things have gotten ( my opinion ) the tide can turn. I hope to still be around at the turning of the tide. Thanks, all you good folks at Comic Book Historians, for a really great interview.

I have vol.1 of Defiant Comics "Warriors of Plasm" and i think it is one of the best comic stories I have ever read that didn't have a moral to it. While reading it all i kept telling myself I have never read a story so well put together!!! - I hope sometime in the future to get the rest of the volumes because it is an amazing world!!! Every time you hear about Jim Shooter from isiders they all say the best things about him. "If you needed results you get Shooter." and I don't know how many times I've heard "Jim Shooter needs to be brought back" when there is a problem because "if Shooter was hear none of this would be happening" - He leaves an impression just from those who knew him and his work ethic!!

Being a divorce lawyer doesn’t make one an expert on domestic violence; it makes one an expert in divorce, in your jurisdiction. It certainly doesn’t make one an expert on whether someone was portraying domestic violence in a comic. It is one of the lowest forms of argument to say something like, “I’m a divorce lawyer” and then try to use that to prejudice your audience and effectively say, “so, I know more than you.”” It’s pathetic, really. Oh, I’m an attorney too and I’ve handled both divorce and assault cases. It does not make me an expert on whether my interviewee intended to portray domestic violence in a comic.

FYI, that Professor X in bondage gear thing absolutely happened and it was on Shooters watch. It was in Uncanny X-Men 193. The Morlocks heal Prof. X after he was attacked, and his clothes were ruined so they put him in bondage gear. He even flips out about it. It's a funny moment because the X-men are laughing at him when he walks into the danger room wearing it. Especially Cannonball who had the same thing done to him and when he walked in in that kind of clothing, Professor X had admonished him. It was great comedy.

Most of the supervisors/managers I’ve had in my life that were good at their job were not popular with employees. Random thought… I’ve been reading about a critical reassessment of Shooter. I don’t know if it’s necessarily the same people who are “rethinking” his tenure, though. Maybe it’s just that we’re finally hearing from large numbers of readers who always appreciated the increased quality, consistency, and timeliness of the product, and that this is a counterweight to the vocal minority of creators who felt wronged.

I loved watching all this (i'm at Valiant section) but the Valiant and Defiance Comic sections are the ones i was waiting/waited for. I love reading Valiant Comics and i don't know why so many people hate on them!!!! I wish the Defiant section would be longer because i read "Warriors of Plasm" Vol. 1 and that tpb was so amazing (as i stated below) I hope one day to collect the whole Defiant Catilog!

Thank you, Mr. Shooter, for calling out that "Two Sides to EVERYthing" nonsense. There is a moral and intellectual laziness to people who adopt this approach to resolving conflicts that is fundamentally dishonest, harmful, and dangerous. Resolving conflict is hard work sometimes, which is why most people don't want to do it and opt to do more harm than good by splitting the difference. Establishing facts, also known as the truth, is essential to resolving a conflict. This is why some people lie, because they know if the truth were considered, things wouldn't go their way.

I know this just a pathetic anecdote, but when my wife divorced me, I was told that I was to blame too because it takes two to tango. I find it interesting that Jim Shooter remembers that John Romita Jr. volunteered to do Star Brand (@6:23:00) even though he was warned that it would be financially a bad move. In Modern Masters interview John Romita Jr. was asked about why he left the X-Men in the middle of the "Mutant Massacre" storyline to do Star Brand. JRJR remembers that it was Jim Shooter who asked him to do Star Brand and said it would be good for him to do it and it would pay off financially.

Funny how Tony Isabella got Stan's attention by tattling on Len and Marv. Not by plotting or scripting anything good or briefly editing the crappy black-&-white mags canceled on his watch, but by trying to get his coworkers fired. Speaks volumes about the guy.

Good to see that when things worked out he was behind it, but when things went wrong it wasn´t his fault :) but hey, those things don´t take away the merit of his work. He was responsible for lots of great stuff and specially for fighting for the rights of the creative people. And he´s also an acomplished and competent writer. He could kick the ass of most guys working in the comics industry right now. Long live JS
