It’s sad to think that John Buscema died within a year of this interview. Based on how healthy and alert he appeared, you wouldn’t think that he had so little time left. 😞

totally. he found out he had stomach cancer very soon after this interview was recorded.

The interviewer was Paula Yates. Ex wife of Bob Geldof, and lover of Michael Hutchence. She sadly took her own life not long after Hutchence, lead singer with Australian super group INXS, committed suicide. She was the daughter of famed Australian talent show host Hughie Green, and her adoptive father was TV evangelist Jess Yates. Meanwhile Alan Moore writes and draws comics, and thinks he is God's gift to the medium.

Depends what you mean by 'creating Marvel". As a 10 year old, I'd dope over any superhero, and really didn't put any thought into who had predominantly come up with the character. But when it came to belonging, to being made to feel i was part of something special, a gang, a club, a brotherhood. That side of Marvel was completely, 100%, unequivocally, created by Stan the Man. And he had the advantage of marrying a good geordie lass, so he could do no wrong in my eyes. Howay Wor Stan !!!!!! (Search Stan Lee is a Geordie, to hear him mimicking Joanie's accent)

Ric Estrada is an absolute favorite artist of mine and this is only interview I've ever seen with him! Great stuff! We've had a few chances to talk about him on our "Weird Warriors Podcast" that covers the Weird War Tales series from DC (and an upcoming 1952 romance comic featured on the 2025 Valentine's Day episode.)...thanks so much for posting this!

Stan Lee obviously played an important role in the success of Marvel... and he should be given credit for it, but I will ALWAYS know and give credit to Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko for the creation of the Marvel characters. Kirby and Ditko (especially Kirby) did all the heavy lifting when it came to creation. Stan Lee may have added polish to the characters but those characters were practically fully formed by the time Lee got to them. Lee's genius laid in the promotion of Marvel and comics in general. And that skill is genuinely a skill and extremely important BUT the character creations are 90% Kirby + Ditko for their respective characters. The creative comics character part is all Kirby + Ditko. They invented the Marvel comics characters we all love today...Stan Lee was the Promotion guy....Kirby + Ditko were the Artistic Creation guys.....they gave Stan Lee something to promote.

Makes sense. Did anyone set their stories in real cities before this?
@Mort7an10 күн бұрын
The dynamic of the Fantastic Four was present in numerous comics that Kirby worked on before 1961.
@edfarajian466410 күн бұрын
Kirby was science realism. Stan was social realism. Although if you have an earlier Kirby story set in a real city, that would be cool to know.
@mesolithicman1649 күн бұрын
I think Stan amplified his personalities, I grew up reading those stories and tge human interaction was as enjoyable as the action. That is something DC never quite understood.

Starlin’s art and stories are great, but his dialogue is kind of stifled and off. He did do some GREAT Batman stories , though! His KG Beast story, in particular. That story should have STAYED, and the Beast should NOT have been seen again! Thanos is a GREAT character, but Starlin writes him as too much of a Mary Sue! It feels too fan fictiony.
