Use the Right Gasket Material - Wrenchin' Up

Within the last couple of years, I hear a lot of people praising liquid, like Permatex, over solid gaskets. I called the new car dealership I used to work at and talked to my boys in service, and they, hands down, only use liquid gaskets for water pumps on any personal projects.

Hi - Thanks for watching! RTV and other sealing compounds can be helpful when installing gaskets in between parts that have rough or pitted surfaces but sometimes it’s best to just follow the manufacture’s installation instructions, especially the case where special gasket materials are used.

I did try Fel Pro directly but all they do is refer you to their standard list of retail outlets that carry their products, all of which (except Advance, who I will try today) says they don't have the paper gaskets. Thanks again man!

lol---bought a car quest water pump from advanced for a 2000 jaguar xj8--it came with the paper gasket--original gasket was metal--tried to re use metal gasket and leaked so i was kinda forced to use the paper----2 months later its leaking---gonna buy a metal gasket

Get another paper gasket. Clean the surfaces really well. Use a brass brush or green scouring pad if needed. Then apply some Versachem to the block and then the water pump. Place paper gasket on water pump, which will be held on by the versachem. Install pump ensuring to tighten bolts in a cross pattern. Done! No more leaks.
